Caspian wakes up and feels his head is bandaged. He opens his eyes and sits up. He takes off the bandage and looks around at his surroundings.
"This bread is too stale."
"I'll just get him some soup then."
"You said you were going to get rid of him."
"No. Trumpkin told us to take care of him, and I said I would take care of him."
"Well, I don't think I hit him hard enough."
"Nikabrik, he's just a boy!"
"He's a Telmarine, not some lost puppy!"
"We can't kill him now, not after bandaging its head. It would be like murdering a guest."
"Oh, and how do you think his friends are treating their guests?"
"Trumpkin knew what he was doing."
Caspian makes a run for the door, making Trufflehunter the badger drop the bowl of soup. Nikabrik stands in Caspian's way and pulls out his sword. Caspian grabs the poker from the fire and blocks Nikabrik's blows.
"See? I told you we should have killed him!"
"You know why we can't kill him!"
"If you're taking a vote, I'm with him."
"We can't let him go! He's seen us!"
Nikabrik swings his sword a couple more times, but Caspian blocks all of his blows.
"That's enough, Nikabrik! Or do I have to sit on your head again?!"
Nikabrik puts his sword back in his belt.
"And you, look what you made me do! I spent half the morning on that soup."
"What, what are you?"
"You know, it's funny. You would think people would recognize a badger when they see one."
"No, I mean. You're Narnians. You're supposed to be extinct."
"Sorry to disappoint you."
Trufflehunter puts a new bowl of soup on the table for Caspian.
"There you go. Still hot."
"Since when did we become a boarding house for Telmarine soldiers?"
"I am not a soldier! I am Prince Caspian, the tenth."
"What are you doing here?"
"Running away. My uncle has always wanted my throne. I suppose I have only lived this long because he did not have an heir of his own."
"Well, this changes things."
"Yes. It means we don't have to kill you ourselves."
"You're right."
Caspian begins to put on his armour, and Trufflehunter stops him.
"Where are you going?"
"My uncle will not stop until I'm dead."
"But, you can't leave! You're meant to save us! Don't you know, what this is?"
Trufflehunter pulls out the horn, Queen Susan's horn.
In the Telmarine citadel, Professor Cornelius walks into his study to find Miraz there, reading.
"You have quite a library, Doctor."
"Is there anything in particular you seek, my lord?"
"I think I have already found what I am looking for, in one of my soldiers!"
Miraz sticks one of Queen Susan's arrows into a book of the Golden Age of Narnia.
"What do you know of Queen Susan's horn?"
"It was said to be magic."
"Magic?"
"The Narnians believed it could summon their kings and queens of old. At least, such was the superstition."
"And what does Caspian know of this superstition?"
"My lord, you forbade me from mentioning the old tales."
"So I did."
Cornelius sees Glozelle standing outside of his study door.
"I will say this, my lord. If Caspian does know of the deep magic, my lord would have good reason to be nervous."
The soldiers arrest Cornelius. General Glozelle and Lord Sopespian stand in the hallway to watch.
"First our prince, now his tutor. If the members of Miraz's own house are not safe, are any of us?"
"Lord Sopespian!"
"Those are dangerous words, Sopespian."
"But, these are dangerous times, General. One should choose his words as carefully as he chooses his friends."
Sopespian walks to join Miraz in Doctor Cornelius' study.
"How long until the bridge is finished?"
"Construction continues on schedule."
"That is not good enough. I need my army across that river now!"
"May I suggest you contribute some of your own men? I have only so many at my disposal."
"A fact you would be wise to remember. General Glozelle, go to Beruna. Take as many troops as you need. We must get to Caspian before they do."
"They, my lord?"
"It's time you learned your history."
Sopespian looks at the book on the table, which shows artwork from the Narnian Golden Age.
The family and Trumpkin row down the Glasswater River. Kayla and Lucy look up at the trees, wondering why they have no life in them.
"They're so still."
"They're trees. What'd you expect?"
"They used to dance."
"I'm still the Guardian of the Dancing Trees."
"It wasn't long after you left that the Telmarines invaded. Those that survived retreated to the woods. And the trees have retreated so deeply inside themselves that no one has heard from them since."
"I don't understand. How could Aslan have let this happen?"
"Aslan? I thought he abandoned us after you all did."
"Woah! Hold up we didn't abandon jack shit, and we damn sure ain't gonna be accused of it, and neither is my Athair!"
"We didn't mean to leave, you know."
"Doesn't make much difference now, does it?"
"Get us to the rest of the Narnians, and it will."
They reach the shore and pull the boat in. Trumpkin ties it off. Lucy wanders off a bit and notices a bear.
"Hello there! It's alright. We're friends."
The bear stands up and looks at Lucy, hungrily.
"Don't move, your majesty!"
The bear starts charging after her, and Susan puts an arrow to the bowstring.
"Stay away from her!"
"Shoot, Susan! Shoot!"
The bear continues to come closer. Lucy screams, and by this time, Peter, Edmund, and Kayla have their swords drawn, and Ivar has his axe ready. Just before the bear reaches her, an arrow hits it and it falls over dead. Susan looks over and sees that it was Trumpkin who fired it.
"Why wouldn't it stop?"
"I expect he was hungry."
They run to Lucy, and peter helps her up, aiming his sword at the dead bear.
"He was wild."
"I don't think he could talk at all."
"Get treated like a dumb animal long enough and that's what you become. You may find Narnia to be a more savage place than you remember."
"I don't ever remember Narnia being savage."
"Trumpkin, maybe you know."
"Maybe I know what?"
"What is going on in Terebinthia?"
"And why would you be concerned with Terebinthia?"
"I'm not just Lady Protector of Narnia, Baroness of Dancing Lawn, and Guardian of the Dancing Trees. I'm the rightful heir to the throne of Terebinthia. Do you know what is going on there? Anything at all?"
"The best ones to ask about that would be the centaurs."
Kayla was scared for whatever the centaurs would tell her, once she found them.
