It was a bright day while a boy with darkly tanned skin stared out the window ignoring the teacher who was waving around a bunch of paper screaming about the boy's and his fellow classmates' future. The sun was coming in perfectly bathing the boy in the afternoon sunlight making him smile and close his eyes. The sound of explosions made him sigh and look over to see an ash blonde boy with small explosions crackling in his palms.
"Oi sensei don't lump me in with the rest of these extras! I'm gonna be Number 1!" The blonde yelled, his hands raised in the air.
The rest of the class yelled at Bakugo annoyed with his arrogance.
"Ah, Haruto Namikaze and Izuku Midoriya are also down as applying to UA as well," the teacher said, bringing the class's attention to the tan boy and a wild mop of green hair in the center of the room. Namikaze stayed looking out the window pretending not to hear the shouts of the blonde as he railed against Midoriya.
Bakugo soon turned his attention to Haruto who was still looking out the window in his own little world.
"Hey Orphan did you not fucking hear me? Are your ears useless like shitty Deku?"
Haruto turned to the blonde, his face impassive. "You say something?" This sentence sent the exploding boy into further rage, the smoke and explosions coming from his hands nearly filling the classroom.
"That's enough Bakugo, take your seat," sensei said, trying to bring order back to the classroom. His words punctuated by a heavy cough as the windows came open clearing out the smoke.
Bakugo gritted his teeth and went back to his seat not noticing the small smirk playing at Namikaze's lips, his amber eyes dancing with an inner light. Riling up Katsuki Bakugo is too easy, he thought. Haruto glanced over his shoulder to where Izuku was still on the floor trembling from the class' laughter and Bakugos threats. "C'mon Midoriya-san get up," Haruto encouraged the tear streaked boy.
The boy shook his mop of wild hair and muttered a quick thanks getting back to his chair.
Class was soon over. Haruto was packing his bag when he saw Bakugo and a couple of the other boys from class approach Midoriya.
"What are you doing Deku? Thinking a useless person without a quirk can get into UA. You are worse than the rest of the trash in this school." Bakugo had his hand on Midoriya's shoulder and Haruto could see smoke rising from it. The next words out of Bakugo's mouth stopped Haruto cold before he could do anything. "If you want to be a hero so bad you should just take a dive off the roof and pray for a quirk in your next life."
Haruto couldn't believe Bakugo would say something like that and still claim to want to be a hero. Before he could speak up Bakugo tossed a notebook Midoriya still had on his desk out the window and left the room not sparing a look back.
A chair scraping breaks Haruto from his shock and he sees Midoriya leaving the room. Haruto follows closely to make sure that Midoriya wasn't gonna take the explosive boy's advice. To his relief Midoriya went downstairs leaving the school.
Haruto looked down at his watch. He still had time before he needed to be home. Better make sure Midoriya doesn't do anything stupid on his way home, he thought his bag slung over his shoulder.
He caught up to the green haired boy and saw he was fishing his notebook out of the school's koi pond. "Hey, Midoriya-san!" Haruto called, causing the boy to jump and turn towards him.
"N-Namikaze-san, w-what are you doing here?" Midoriya stuttered.
Haruto gave him a wide grin, rubbing the back of his head making his already messy raven hair even worse. "I wanted to see if we could walk home together," Haruto said, causing Midoriya's eyes to widen like saucers.
"W-why? W-we don't really know each other," he said looking down at his feet.
"I see you heading the same way as me every day and I thought we could walk together. Maybe we can be friends." That and Haruto couldn't in good conscience leave someone alone who just got told to take a dive with no water.
Midoriya's head jerked up at the word friends, his hands tightening on his soaked notebook that had a large thirteen written on the cover. "R-really? Y-you would want to be friends with someone like me?" He questioned.
"Why not? I'm sure we'll get along," Haruto said, placing his tanned hand on Midoriya's shoulder. "And call me Haruto."
Midoriya looked up, his eyes brimmed with tears and a bright smile on his face. He gave a nod. "Izuku."
Haruto's smile widened and he slapped Izuku's back making him stumble. "C'mon Izuku. Let's head home," Haruto said, walking away with Izuku close behind.
"Is what the teacher said right, Izuku. You're applying to UA, too?" Haruto asked the green haired boy, who looked down at his feet scuffing his shoes along the street. They were passing under a bridge, the setting sun casting long shadows under it.
"Y-yes. I've a-always wanted to be a hero," Izuku mumbled, his eyes downcast. At the edge of the overpass Haruto stooped just inside the shadows and turned.
"Then you better work hard. So we can be heroes together," Haruto said, giving Izuku a thumbs up and a wide grin. This made Izuku look up in surprise once again astonished by his new friend.
"Y-you r-really -," before he could finish the manhole cover in the center of the overpass blew open. Out of the hole came a slime villain and before Haruto could move the villain had surrounded Izuku trying to get inside his mouth.
Shit he's gonna drown in that thing. Think Haruto, think. Got it.
Large hands made of light coalesced in the air brightening the dark overpass. They moved forward clawing at the sludge, trying to get a hold on Izuku to pull him out. The sludge laughed maniacally, raising a tentacle up to bash at Haruto who managed to dodge it by a hair's breadth.
Haruto was starting to panic. He needed to get his friend out of there. Before anything else could happen, a loud voice exclaimed.
"Fear not citizens, for I AM HERE!" And standing in the street was All Might with his customary smile that made everything seem like it would be okay. The slime abandoned Haruto in favor of attacking the more immediate threat rushing the number one hero.
All Might moved forward, rearing back his arm, his grocery bag flailing behind him. "TEXAS SMASH!" The wind pressure from the blow scattered the slime and would have tumbled Haruto too if he hadn't conjured a quick shield of light.
Haruto dropped his shield and quickly ran to check on Izuku avoiding stepping in the remains of the villain. Seeing that his friend was still breathing just unconscious, he let out a sigh of relief. "Thanks, All Might," Haruto said, looking over his shoulder. All Might was gathering the villain up in two plastic bottles.
"Haha. Think nothing of it. I was just doing what any hero would do. It was my fault you got caught up in my fight. Is your friend over there alright?"
"Yeah he's fine, he just needs to wake up," Haruto said. He went to gather Izuku's things when he saw the notebook Bakugo threw out the window earlier. He picked it up and turned to All Might who was just finishing with the clean up. "Hey All Might, do you think you could sign my friend's book? He loves heroes. Especially you."
This made All Might release another mighty laugh. He reached out and took the notebook and produced a marker from … somewhere, writing across two pages. The two turned when they heard an audible groan.
Izuku was sitting up rubbing his eyes. "What happened?" He groaned as he stood. He froze when he finally saw who was standing next to Haruto.
"Sorry for getting you caught up in my battle, young man," All Might said, smiling down at Izuku.
"A-all M-might. H-haruto," Izuku stuttered, his voice weak. Haruto smiled and gave a lazy wave.
"Yo, glad to see you're still kicking. You had me worried there for a sec," Haruto said.
"A-all Might can I please have your auto-" before he finished Haruto handed back the notebook on the page where All Might had signed. "He already did it!" Izuku stood straight bowing at the waist multiple times in quick succession. "Thank you. It will be a family treasure for generations." This made the pro hero let go a nervous chuckle, before he started to stretch preparing to leave.
"I'm off. The true villain of every hero is time." All Might crouched down and leapt leaving a dust cloud making Haruto cover his eyes grumbling.
"He could've at least given a warning. C'mon Izu-" Haruto looked around the overpass and couldn't find Izuku anywhere. He looked up and there attached to All Might's leg was a mop of green hair and a black uniform flapping in the wind. Haruto sighed. "You sure get in a lot of trouble Izuku. I have a feeling my life has gotten a lot more interesting with you in it," Haruto laughed.
Haruto turned and walked in the opposite direction of where he and Izuku were going before. It was a long walk home, but he was glad he followed Izuku, because he learned a lot. Haruto rubbed at the slash over his right eye as it started to itch. He still had a long way to go before he could protect those he cared about. And that is a lesson he would take to heart.
Haruto finally made it home just as the sun was starting to set, casting an orange tint to the inside. He heard the sounds of children laughing and playing in the room to his right. He approached the door to the room leaning a shoulder against the jam and what he saw lightened his heart from the dark thoughts from before. There were three boys wrestling on the floor rolling around and on the other side of the room two young girls were playing with their dolls giggling and watching the boys rough house. The only odd one out was a girl sitting by the window, her tiny legs pulled up to her chin, her golden hair hanging in her eyes.
"Now what are all you doing here?" Haruto asked, his smile evident in his voice.
"Haru!" All the kids yelled except for the one sitting by the window. The boys stopped their fighting. All three of them looked guiltily away from him.
"Go get cleaned up, dinner should be ready soon," Haruto said and the kids all started to run past him. He ruffled all five of their heads on their way past. "Oh and where is Obaasan." The kids yelled that she was in her office.
Looking back he saw that the golden haired girl hadn't moved an inch. Moving closer he crouched down next to the girl. "Taiga-chan , dinner is gonna be ready soon," Haruto said, his voice soft as if talking to a skittish kitten. He touched her shoulder and she flinched. Taiga looked up at him, her large blue eyes wide, her face impassive. "You should get cleaned up quickly, don't want to be late or Kenji, Sora, and Daku will eat all the food." Haruto chuckled and was pleased to see the barest hints of a smile on the young girl's face. She stood up slowly and walked up stairs to the bathroom that was there.
Haruto too stood up stretching and was about to go get dinner ready when he saw a short old woman standing in the doorway. "Obaasan! I was about to come see you," he said a smile on his face as he bent to hug the woman. She grinned up at him tapping him on the head with her cane.
"Why are you so late? Making a woman wait is never a good thing Haruto," Obaasan said, her wrinkled face creased with worry despite the cheery words.
"Ah it was nothing baasan. I was just walking a friend home cause someone said some pretty shitty things to them," Haruto said, receiving a smack to the shin at his swear. "Ow. And we were attacked by a villain, but you'll never believe it we were saved by All Might."
Her face darkened at the mention of an attack. "So many villains these days," she sighed. "Well at least a hero was there. Now go clean yourself up and help me set the table. These old bones aren't good for much these days."
"Whatever you say baasan," Haruto laughed, bending and kissing the top of her head as he went to the kitchen to put the final touches on dinner.
He turned the TV on in the kitchen as he pulled plates and bowls out of the cabinets. The news was showing footage of a recent villain attack where there was fire and explosions everywhere. And to Haruto's surprise the same sludge villain that attacked him and Izuku was on screen. He must have gotten away when Izuku went for a ride on All Might Air. There in the center of it all entrapped by the slime was a head of ash blonde hair screaming trying to get out of the sludge. He couldn't believe it was Bakugo in the same position Izuku was in barely an hour ago.
The heroes were just watching, keeping the crowds back, unable to do anything without causing further damage. And suddenly from the crowd broke a familiar head of green hair, running haphazardly towards the villain and his hostage, scrambling to get Bakugo out of his captivity. As the sludge was about to bring down a whip of slime there was a huge blur and there was All Might blocking Izuku from the hit.
All Might reared his arm back taking hold of both Bakugo and Izuku and released a mighty smash that tore the villain apart scattering it once again. And if that wasn't enough the sky began to pour out a steady stream of rain extinguishing the nearby fires.
Haruto shook his head, a wide smile on his face. All Might sure was something else. But he was gonna need to have a talk with his new friend about doing reckless things. He turned off the TV and finished setting the table for dinner.
When dinner was over and Haruto finished up his homework, he snuck out of his room making sure everyone was asleep and he made his way to the roof. The flat roof of the orphanage was one of the few places Haruto could come to be alone, but not only that it's where he trained his Quirk as hard as he could.
Standing in the center of the roof he manifests a blades of light encompassing each of his arms. He goes through forms slowly then faster and faster sweat pooling on his back. With a swift move he jumps in the air forming a light platform and kicking it to swiftly change directions. He does this over and over til he can barely move. The light on his arms soon vanishes and he falls back looking up at the stars, the full moon seemingly close enough for him to reach out and grab.
It's only ten months until the UA entrance exams, a little longer and he'll be on the path to his dream. He'll do it for everyone for his kaasan, his tousan, for his new family. He'll be a hero. He reached up with one hand closing his fist grasping at the moon, while the other covered the scar that slashed over his eye.
What he didn't notice as his eyes started to close his exhaustion catching up to him was a small girl with golden hair coming and covering him with a thin blanket.
A/N: Welcome to the story. I hope you all enjoy. I will be be splitting myself between this and a Harry Potter fic I'm writing so I don't burn myself out on either.
