Chapter Four: Reward
I spent the whole 5 hour flight worrying about a variety of things. One, I was sure Edward and the rest of the Cullen crew were on a plane right now following me. Or maybe they had their own private jet. After seeing their house, I was convinced they were rich. But private jet or not, I had a strong feeling they would be waiting for me in the Virginia airport.
Two, I had no where to go. I couldn't live on the streets again, not in Virginia. Virginia had sun and if I stayed outside all day, I would sparkle and probably get locked up in Area 51 to be experimented on.
Three, there were so many delicious humans on this plane that I found it very difficult to tune out their scents. If I were to bite even one person, someone else would see and the whole plane would go awry. There was no way I could kill everyone before they started calling the police. Actually, I probably could, but then who would drive the plane? Not me.
I decided to put those worries in the back of my head and just concentrate on successfully posing as a human for the duration of this flight. There was about one more hour to go. If only I could sleep...
The overhead lights flicked back on and the plane hit the ground with a thud, followed by the loud scratching sound of the wheels gliding against the runway. The flight attendant's voice filled the plane as she announced that we have reached our destination. I quietly congratulated myself for not killing anyone on the plane and made a mental note to reward myself later on. Charlie's blood was good, but it wasn't enough. I needed something better, something stronger.
I was the first one off the plane, happy that I didn't have any luggage to slow me down. As I stepped out into the gate area, I got a few stares, which was expected because of my blood-red eyes.
I thought I would feel better once I reached the airport, but I was wrong. There were even more delicious people here--thousands of them. The universe really likes to challenge me, huh? I thought.
I needed a moment alone, a moment where I wouldn't have to pretend to be human. Luckily the women's restroom was right in front of me. I went in and to my surprise, it was empty. Well, almost empty. There was a woman in the stall with a fruity yet flowery scent that I just knew I couldn't stay away from. Just one bite wouldn't hurt, I thought. Plus, we were alone and hopefully no one would find out. I promised myself I wouldn't drain her, so hopefully I could keep that promise.
I went into the stall next to her.
"Hi," I said.
That was a dumb move. No one had a conversation with a stranger in a public restroom. Whatever you were doing there was your business and your business only.
As I expected, the woman didn't answer. Forget it. I stood on the toilet, praying that I wouldn't slip up and fall into the toilet bowl. I put my hands over the stall wall and launched myself into the next stall.
"Ah!" The woman shrieked.
She was blonde, just as I'd suspected.
"Just be quiet and be still." I commanded, but she didn't listen.
"No! What are you doing in here?"
Ignoring the question, I opened my mouth wide and allowed my fangs to clamp onto her soft warm neck like a leech. Her blood tasted 10 times better than Charlie's...
Be quiet! I chastised her in my head because she just wouldn't stop screaming. All of a sudden, a male's voice filled the room.
"What's going on in here?!"
I froze. Edward. It has to be Edward. I hoped not. I yanked the stall door open and to my surprise, there was just a normal Asian man there. Thank god it wasn't Edward...I don't know what I would've done if it was him.
I walked up to the man who wore fear all over his face.
"What are you doing here? This is the women's restroom." I said with a sarcastic edge to my voice.
"I-I uh well, um, what had happened was-"
"What a mess," I muttered.
Before I knew what I was doing, my fangs clamped onto his neck too. I knew I should stop at some point, but I just couldn't. Blood tasted too good to just let it go to waste. And just like that, I drained him. Drained him of both his life and blood. I didn't know how to feel about it yet. All I could think about now was the woman. Before, she was just a fun treat, a little reward I owed myself. Now she had seen me kill this man, and that made her a liability.
I turned to face her. She was still standing in the stall scared out of her wits. She started to shake violently, then I remembered that there was no need for me to kill her because the venom was going to do it first.
"W-what's h-happening?..." she choked out.
"I can't watch this," I mumbled.
I went up to her and snapped her neck in one smooth motion. She was out like a light.
I took the man's body and dumped it in the stall with the woman, then I went up to the sink. In the mirror, I assessed myself.
Blood was smeared all over my mouth, I had dark circles under my eyes from that stressful and tedious flight, and my eyes were even darker than they'd been before. Before, they'd been a candy red and now they were cherry red. I just hope the stare count wouldn't double.
I ran some sink water and rinsed my mouth, then I headed out of the restroom. Resisting the urge to just use my crazy vampire speed, I speed walked like every other human there through the airport until I reached the outside world. Just as I expected, there was sun in Virginia. It was a little chilly too. I covered my face with my jacket so no one would see my sparkly skin and walked through the streets looking for a car to steal. My eyes settled on a pretty canary yellow Porsche parked in front of me. Lucky for me, the windows were down.
I stuck my arm in the window and unlocked it. Once I was in the car, I pressed the push-start button and the engine roared to life. Traffic was light, which was good. I wanted to get to my destination as soon as possible. Yes, I had a destination. I planned to go to Mystic Falls, since it was only an hour and forty minutes away.
An hour and forty minutes later, I parked the Porsche in front of a place called "Mystic Grill". If I was hungry, I would definitely stop and get something from here, but food would only taste like cardboard now. Sigh. Whatever, blood was better.
I exited the car and leaned against it, planning my next move. And that's when I saw her.
"Elena?"
"Bella?"
Author's Note: Oooh, how do Bella and Elena know each other??? Find out in the next chapter! Also did you see what I did there with the Alice and her yellow Porsche reference? No? Ok I'll go home.
