Chapter Six: Lost and Found
"One of us...who even is she?" Said the other pale man-the one with the dark brown hair.
"She's supposed to be my cousin..." Elena started.
"Elena, you know what this means, right?" The dark brown-haired man said.
"You're a vampire?" Elena asked me.
I stood there stupidly, playing with my fingernails and swaying from side-to-side. There was no way she would want to see me again now that she knew the truth. But why was this invisible wall here and how did it give me away? I nodded glumly and Elena gasped at the top of her lungs.
I was mentally preparing myself to hop back on the plane and go to some far away island when she said the words I never expected she would say.
"Come in,"
"What?! Elena, are you crazy?"
"No, Damon, I'm not crazy. Bella is my cousin and family is important. She's the only family I have left right now. So vampire or not, she's staying with me."
"What do you mean 'she's staying with me'? This isn't even your house!" The man whose name I was assuming was Damon said.
"This is my house. You and Stefan signed the rights over to me when I needed a safe house to hide from Klaus, remember?"
Who the hell is Klaus and why would Elena need a safe house to hide from him? I thought.
Damon was silent for a while, then he turned to me.
"One wrong move and you're dead, 'Kay?" He smirked.
"Damon!" Elena exclaimed. "Calm down, it's not like she's evil,"
At least not yet, I thought. If Damon was going to be throwing around smart remarks at me all the time then we certainly would have a problem.
"Come on Bella, I'll show you to your new room." Elena held out her hand.
I grabbed her hand tentatively and stepped into the house. The invisible wall seemed to have disappeared. Funny, the Cullens didn't mention anything about having to be invited into places when they explained the whole vampire thing to me.
The house was even more fancy on the inside. It was an old boarding house, but it sure was fancy and elegant-looking. Elena led me up a big staircase and down the long hall. She took me to a bedroom that was bigger than the whole house Charlie and I used to live in. There was so much space I didn't know what to do with myself...
The room had a modern touch to it which was surprising for such an old boarding house. It even had a huge full-sized bathroom.
"So, this is it. We'll probably have to go shopping since you don't seem to have any bags,"
"Maybe tomorrow, I need to relax."
I wanted to tell her why I needed to relax-the fact that I had Edward chasing me on my mind all day-but I didn't feel like answering the millions of questions I knew she would have.
"Yeah I think I'm gonna get some shut eye too,"
"Too? You know vampires can't sleep, right? I can't sleep."
"Hm? Yes they can. I live with two of them. Trust me, I know some things about vampires."
"So then why did Carlisle tell me they couldn't?" I muttered mostly to myself.
"Who's Carlisle?"
"It's a long story..."
"Well we need to hear it. How did you become a vampire anyway?"
"I-"
"Wait, let's go downstairs. Damon and Stefan need to hear this too."
I followed Elena downstairs to the living room where the two guys Damon and Stefan were. Damon was lounging on the sofa and drinking what looked like a glass of alcohol while Stefan was pacing nervously by the fire place and arguing with Damon. I didn't catch a word of what they were saying because the minute Elena and I showed up, they stopped talking and stared at us.
"Bella needs to tell us a few things," Elena announced.
"Hell yeah she does," said Damon. "Who are you and why are you here? Why are you a vampire?"
Sigh.
I explained my whole life story to them-losing the house, being poor, Charlie murdering me, getting turned by Carlisle, my vendetta against Charlie, and finally me running away and coming here to Mystic Falls.
"Wow, and I thought my life was bad," Elena said.
"I guess we both have it bad," I said.
Elena shrugged.
"So, you're not evil and you don't plan on killing us in our sleep or taking the cure to Silas, right?" Damon said.
He was really testing my patience. Not such a good thing to do with a newborn vampire.
"No! I don't even know who Silas is! And what cure? The cure for cancer? I'd surely take that out of your hands, jerk."
Elena chuckled.
"Easy Damon," said Stefan, then he turned to me. "Seeing as you already have a few enemies of your own, we don't want to overwhelm you, but we don't exactly have a quiet quaint life. But we'll talk about that later. We'll look out for these Cullens for you, so don't worry."
"You can look out for them, but I'm not. I don't trust this Bella chick not one bit so if somebody's on their way to come get her, I'll leave the door wide open,"
Again with the smirk. This dude is so annoying. I've had enough.
"Okay, seriously, what is your problem? I just got here, how can I be such a nuisance to you already?" I snapped.
"In case you haven't noticed, I'm not exactly fond of trusting just anyone within my field of vision. Especially not random newborn vampires that just happen to show up at my door."
Before I knew what was happening, I lunged at Damon and put him in my signature headlock before twisting his neck. His body went limp and fell to the floor.
Elena gasped and Stefan was right by her side, holding her as they backed away from me.
"I'm sorry, he was just getting on my nerves." I confessed.
"Bella..." Elena started.
"Shh, it's okay. You know he'll come back. Don't worry about it."
Suddenly I felt sick to my stomach watching Stefan cradle Elena as she stood there staring from me to Damon in shock. I was disgusted with myself.
"I can't do this," I decided.
I dashed out of the house and onto the road. I couldn't believe this. I was on the run again. Every time something went wrong, I would run from the situation instead of facing it. I hurt Charlie and the minute I realized that was wrong, I ran. I "hurt" Damon and once I saw how scared and shocked Elena was after I'd done it, I ran. What was wrong with me...?
I was coming onto a bridge called "Wickery Bridge" when I decided that I'd had enough of running from my problems. I turned around and ran in the other direction, but then I noticed a car going at least 180 an hour and it was heading straight for me. My body froze like the ice hard rock it was. The car came closer and closer and I couldn't help but think 'Maybe I deserve this,' . After everything I'd done in the last 24 hours, I knew damn well I deserved this.
I anticipated the car's hard exterior to crash into mine, but that moment never came. Instead, I was pushed by something or someone. I flew into the large body of water beneath the bridge and sank deep into the water. Maybe the car did hit me. I wouldn't know.
I opened my eyes and looked around me in the dark murky water. There was a face next to me. The face of a woman. She had gorgeous blond hair and her face was unfairly beautiful and pale. Wait a minute, I knew who this was.
She swam over to me in a fast-moving blur and grabbed me by the neck, cutting off the limited supply of air I had. My body broke into a frenzy and jerked around maliciously, trying to free myself of Rosalie Cullen's strong hold on me. I quickly gave up and let the black nothingness take over.
It was over. The Cullens had found me.
