The Healing Begins Arc

Chapter 1: Runaway

(By The Rigs)

It had been 2 weeks since it felt like the world had ended but also began all in the same moment. At least, it felt that way to Sakura Haruno. The end of the ninja war had signified so much to the world of the Shinobi. Everything felt different now, even him...
After healing as much damage as she could on her boys in the battlefield, reinforcements came and swiftly took them to the medic bay by the battlefields. Sakura insisted on finishing her work there, despite others offering to take over. "Sakura you must be exhausted looking after us by now," Naruto would repeat himself, through painful groans and broken sleep.
"I got plenty of rest while you two were tearing each other apart," she would retort and the sideways glance by Sasuke did not go unnoticed. It was he, after all, that placed her in a deep sleep so that she could not follow.
Once they were transferred to Konoha hospital, it was weeks before Sasuke was then well enough to be taken into custody. During this time he was quiet, but courteous. He would thank Sakura for her work as guards looked on cautiously. He would even smirk at Naruto's jokes and greet Kakashi with a silent nod everytime he visited. So far, however, the Uchiha remained as stoic as ever. Even more so, if that were possible.
The agreement was eventually made that Sakura would finish her work on healing Sasuke's arm at the interrogation centre in Konoha, where Sasuke was to be held until trial. She had insisted it be her and He had refused anyone else touching him anyway. He hadn't made it clear why but was always polite in his refusals from other nursers and doctors. Sakura had guessed there was a sense of deep shame about his missing appendage and what it truly symbolized and he didn't want just anyone bearing witness to that just yet.
He had been transported early that morning and after her shift at the hospital, Sakura made her way to the prison, adorned in her white coat and carrying her medical bag.
She was put through the usual security procedures at the entrance, before being led down to a hall with a row of cells on one side and an open office space on the other. Two shinobi's watched her carefully as they leant against their desks.
Sakura stepped up to the bars and looked up to see Sasuke, blindfolded and wearing a straight jacket. She grimaced at his appearance. It was a necessary precaution to bind him this way but it was painful to look at.
One of the shinobi moved himself off the desk and began jangling his keys so he could unlock the door for her. She swallowed as she glanced up at the man, who gave her a quick glance back before unlocking the door.
Sakura stepped inside as it was closed and locked behind her. The echo of the clanging metal rang awkwardly around them.
Sasuke looked up and even though his eyes were covered, the way his jaw relaxed told her he knew it was her.
"I'm just here to carry on with the check ups," Sakura announced, shifting on her feet before taking a few steps towards him and kneeling down in front of him. They had barely said any words to each other since that day on the battlefield, when Sakura discovered him and Naruto with their arms ripped out the sockets. She didn't know what to say. Too much had happened between them. Their conversations, if you could call them that, were merely medical questions followed by "yes, no, thank you" answers from Sasuke. She would always scurry off and leave the room as quickly as possible. A stark contrast from their genin days when his presence brought not only her happiness but a sense of complete safety. Yes...once upon a time, she would have stayed by his side, thankful to be within inches of him, cutting apples. Those times felt like hundreds of years ago.
"I'm going to undo the jacket," Sakura declared as she began undoing the buckles of the jacket with surgical delicacy. "These ties are rubbing right on the wound." She observed. "It must be causing you pain?"
"Not much..." he paused. "But I've been getting headaches again."
Sakura recalled his complaints of intense headaches when he was admitted to hospital. She had worked on his eyes by emitting chakra into his temples to help soothe the strain from the intensity of the battle. He hadn't complained of an issue in several days.
"Hm, might just be a flare up, let's take a look." She was about to undo the blindfold, then hesitated. Now that he was in the jail and not in the hospital, she knew she wasn't permitted to undo the bandage and reveal such dangerous eyes. He was now strong enough to cast a gen-jutsu, attack her, destroy the compound and escape within minutes-perhaps seconds. Could she trust him?
Sasuke sensed her hesitation. "What's wrong?" He asked her.
"N-nothing," she said as she began to slowly unravel the blindfold. Eventually his face was revealed to her fully and he opened his eyes to stare at her, his face expressionless. Her stomach fluttered. She hated it. "Ok, let's begin." She placed her hands on either side of his temples and began to flare her green chakra. He closed his eyes and bowed his head.
"Thank you Sakura," he whispered.
He had said it every single time she healed him or completed various check ups. Even a glass of water at his bedside would omit a small thank you from him, even when she thought he was sleeping. It continued to give her reassurance that perhaps indeed, he was trying to make up for his actions.
"Of course," she replied, her voice quivering.
When he heard the break in her voice he snapped his head up and opened his eyes to look at her. Her sea-foam eyes were glassy and full of pain, but still, she focused on the task at hand. When she caught him staring she gave him a small smile, but her eyes remained the same. As quick as that smile had appeared, it was gone. She realised that this was the first time they were alone together since that night, all those years ago, when he left her on that bench.
Every other time at least one other person had been around, but now...
There were several minutes of silence between them as Sakura continued. Only the sound of the steady hum of her healing green chakra filled the room.
"There," she announced, removing her hands and placing them on her knees, clenching and unclenching her fingers to loosen their stiffness.
"Can you ever forgive me?" He asked her suddenly, his mismatched eyes looking up at her.
"I already did, you big idiot," Sakura replied, still not making eye contact, the shimmer of unshed tears still filling her eyes. The last time she called him that was when she was healing his bloodied arm. It helped her ease the tension.
He could see the tears brimming and he couldn't help but feel years of brewing guilt swell up inside of him once again. She continued to stretch out her fingers, and, in comfort and without much thought, Sasuke placed his hand over hers to stop her. His large hand easily covered her own and it felt surprisingly warm.
She was utterly frozen to the spot. Her heart was racing and the heat was rising to her chest and face. She swallowed the hard lump that had suddenly appeared in her throat and those hot tears she had desperately tried to fight off finally spilled. No words were said, but he stayed just like that. She finally made eye contact with him and saw a shadow of sympathy etched on his features.
"Sakura?"
She jumped out from her daze as she heard the voice of their sensei from the bars. Kakashi was standing there, hands in his pockets, with a somber look on his face.
Sasuke lifted his hand away from hers and lowered his gaze to the floor.
"Kakashi Sensei, I was just finishing up," she said as she fumbled with her work satchel.
"Take your time," he replied softly.
She gave Kakashi a quick smile before turning her attention back to Sasuke, the blindfold resting in her palms. She looked down at it and then back at Sasuke and frowned.
"Sorry I-I have to..." she raised the blindfold up.
Sasuke nodded. "I know."
She ever so delicately began wrapping it round his head, securing it at the back of his hair, before resting her hands at the knot for a moment and then finally pulling away. Even though he was blindfolded once again, he followed her movements with his head. She stood up, didn't dare to meet Kakashi's gaze and walked hastily out of the cell and back down the hall without a second glance.
