Dean Winchester was mad. No, scratch that, he was livid. At his father, at the world, but deep down that anger was masking the fear he felt when he found out about his little brother.
He and Bobby had just finished the hunt, sitting in a diner celebrating with some manly food, as Dean had dubbed it, for the first time in weeks. But Dean could feel something was wrong, manifesting as a deep pit in his stomach.
As soon as Dean, had taken his last bite, Bobby rang Jim to tell him about the success of the hunt. Dean watched as the expression on Bobby's face morphed from a semi-excited one to a concerned one then to a fearful one in a matter of minutes.
Pushing his now empty plate away, Dean leaned forward in his seat and stared at Bobby expectantly, heart beating at what piece of information could Pastor Jim tell Bobby to make the hardened hunter display such expressive emotions like an open book.
"…Alright we'll be there in a couple of hours." Bobby said then hung up.
"What is it Uncle Bobby? What's wrong?" The 14 year old asked nervously.
Bobby sighed "Dean…" he hesitated.
"Please, Uncle Bobby just tell me." Dean pleaded.
Bobby ran a hand through his hair. The next two words he spoke chilled Dean down to his core.
"It's Sammy."
O
John paced back and forth in Sam's hospital room while Jim sat next to the child holding his hand as he slept. He stopped to look when the door opened and Caleb and Joshua entered, returning to the hospital after being forced to go have some sleep at Jim's house which wasn't very far away from the hospital.
"How's Sammy doing?" Joshua whispered to John and Jim as Caleb approached the bed, wanting to feel his little brother breathing for himself.
"The same." Jim sighed, eyes filled with concern for the youngest member of his family, but John stopped his pacing and was focused on Caleb.
"Caleb, something wrong?" he asked, alarmed by the frown on Caleb's face as he stared at Sam.
Caleb had his hand on Sam's neck and moved it to palm his forehead "He seems a bit warm to me." He voiced his concern.
John and Joshua rushed to the bed, but it was Jim who palmed Sam's forehead first, having been sitting directly next to the youngster's bed.
"He does seem hotter than usual." Jim said, with concern.
"I'll get Mac." Joshua told them over his shoulder as he ran to get the doctor.
John stood next to his son's bed and felt the small yet hot face in his hand.
"When's my kid going to get a break." He muttered then sat down in the chair next to the bed, head in hands.
Jim placed a supportive hand on John's shoulder "He'll be fine John."
Joshua chose that time to come bustling into the room with Mac hot on his heels.
Walking towards the bed, Mac glanced at the screen that was monitoring Sam's vitals and noticed an increased respiration rate. Taking out a tympanic thermometer from a drawer, he gently placed it in Sam's ear, but the youngster whined in his sleep and tried to turn his head away but John held his son's head gently in place and whispered assurances in his other ear.
"Shh buddy, it's okay. Daddy's here."
The thermometer beeped and Mac looked at the readout, grimacing.
"He does have a slight fever, but with his current condition it could signify the start something serious." Mac expressed his concern, being straightforward, as he knew his family liked to know the truth even if it was hard.
"What are you going to do?" Jim asked.
"Order some blood work done as a first step, then we'll go from there. I'll tell them to take it from his IV so that he doesn't wake up. Speaking of, when are Dean and Bobby supposed to be here?" Mac questioned as he wrote down instructions on Sam's chart and sank down in a chair.
"I called them about 4 hours ago so they should be here any minute now." Jim answered.
Caleb smirked "Knowing Dean. He probably made Bobby go over the speed limit all throughout the trip."
Jim's phone rang then, and he smiled "Speak of the devil." He said then got out of his chair to answer Bobby's call.
"Johnny you better start digging your grave." Joshua teased.
John glared at him "Get lost Joshua. Dean probably cooled down by now." He said, even though deep down, he knew it wasn't true.
"Guess again." A new voice chimed from the doorway. John, Caleb, Mac and Joshua turned to find Bobby slowly approaching the bed then continued talking.
"Kid's boiling with rage. Jim's trying to calm him down before he comes here. Johnny you might want to start running. How's Sammy?"
Before any of them had the chance to answer, Dean came running into the room, his eyes zeroing on the figure on the bed as he approached it.
"Sammy…" he whispered and grabbed his brother's hand.
The other men felt their hearts warm up from the heartfelt reunion, even if it was one sided for now.
Jim caught the attention of the other men and beckoned with his head towards the door of the room, to give the two brothers some privacy. He knew that Dean would go on a rampage later on, but for now he just needed to be with his brother.
Taking one last glance at the two youngest members of their family, the men filed out of the room. Dean barely noticed that though, too busy in stroking his brother's hair and whispering reassurances in his ear.
"I'm here now Sammy. Big brother's here."
When he finally did notice it was just him and Sam, Dean finally let the tears he had been holding in since entering the room and seeing his little brother in such a fragile state, what with the tube in his nose, the IV in the back of his hand. And Sam, sweet, energetic and vibrant Sam, lying so still, pale and thin in the large hospital bed that made him seem much smaller than he was.
Sam, seemed to notice a comforting presence as he started to stir. Opening tired hazel green eyes, he blinked sleepily as they focused on the figure next to his bed. His face broke into a wide smile when he recognized the person before seeing him clearly.
"Dean! You came." The boy rasped.
Dean ruffled his hair and climbed into bed next to Sam, pulling him closer. "Of course Sammy, you think I'd leave my little brother in the hospital alone? Bobby and I drove straight here when Jim called. After taking a shower of course." He smirked.
Sam grinned and clutched at the amulet that lay on Dean's chest as he burrowed into his brother.
"Good, because I would've passed out again from your stink." He sniggered.
Dean let out a mock gasp and proceeded to reply indignantly about his so called stink, making Sam giggle.
At any other time, Dean would've done anything to avoid a chick flick moment in public, even if it was semi-public, as it was a risk of people seeing him. But right now, he couldn't care less. He was with the person that mattered the most to him, Sam, his entire world, and that was enough.
