It was so dark in the forest without the light of day penetrating through the thick treetops that Quinn could barely see the tree that sat across from her and barely make out three more surrounding her, the rest of the forest lost to darkness.
The thick crunching of leaves and brush under heavy boot snapped Quinn to attention as she stilled her breathing and tried to disappear in the darkness that surrounded the forest. She knew those heavy footsteps belonged to him and that he was not far off from where she was hiding behind the tree.
Her body shook, from fear and the cold of the night as it bit through her cotton tank and pajama bottoms and the fear of being found by him skittered up her spine. The crunching of his steps got closer and Quinn noticed that his pace was casual.
That scared Quinn even more.
He knew that she was hiding behind the tree and was taking his time, also noted by the merry tune he whistled that floated around them in the darkness. There was no way Quinn was going back with him, not if she could help it.
Quinn was fast. She was born a runner and there was no way He was going to catch her now. If only Quinn could see where she was going, her body was cut up from all the branches that smacked into her as she ran.
She took off running as he neared closer to the tree still whistling the same tune. Before Quinn could get more than a foot away she heard a soft pffft of air making her turn to the source of the sound. A sharp sting hit her shoulder and Quinn took off even faster as she felt what she thought was a bullet bury into her flesh.
Quinn's heart nearly leapt from her chest as streams of light began to break through the canopy and offer her more light to see by as she ran out into the clearing. Surrounded by trees and the clearing full of tall grass and wildflowers, it would almost be too beautiful and relaxing of a place to be by herself...if only he wasn't right behind her.
She heard the crashing of his boots as his paced quickened to keep up with Quinn and she noticed that he wasn't whistling anymore.
Quinn staggered, hand gripping her shoulder to stop the bleeding only to find a dart sticking out and drawing her attention to it. She pulled out the dart and it seemed to warp and twist in her hand as she stared at it. A tranq dart.
The whistling started again from behind her and the tune distorted with the clearing as the ground rose up to meet her. Quinn tried to talk but found that only gibberish words came out as his boots stopped right beside her head. Quinn looked up into his smiling face as he rested the tranq gun across his shoulders and crouched down to her level.
"Well that was a fun hunt, you almost made it to the highway!" he laughed mercilessly as Quinn's eyes fluttered shut as the full effects of the tranq dart pulled them under, His laughter echoing in her ears. Her last thoughts going to her friends, would they realise she was gone ?
