My Girl

The one about betrayal.

"So, it's come to this?" Harry sighed sorrowfully. She stared back, wide eyed and silent. "From the first time I saw you, through the window, on that hot summer's day. I saw you and I knew. Just knew, to the depths of my soul, that you were it for me. My happiness in a world full of unknown and shadowed roads, I knew. Didn't you feel it too?" She blinked at him and tilted her head to the side. "Our connection. I can look at you from across a room, look into your beautiful eyes and instantly, I'm home. After all these years. Just the two of us. And now this. I thought nothing but death's icy cold embrace could tear us apart." He reached out to her. She leaned into his touch. "I thought I was the only man you would ever love."

"Harry?!"

Harry pulled back his hand. "Yes, Hermione?" He barely spared her a glance.

"What's going on?"

"Why didn't you tell me sooner?" His attention was away from Hermione. Away from everyone in the Great Hall. "Were there signs? Should I have known?"

"Um, Ron? What's going on?" Hermione was confused, which didn't happen often.

Ron sat near Harry, red faced and full of embarrassment due to the public confrontation. He looked like he wanted to hide under the table. But he didn't respond, simply hunched his shoulders.

"Neville, do you know what's going on?" Hermione tried someone else since she was still confused about what she heard Harry declare. He shook his head.

Finally, Ginny spoke up. "Harry is being unreasonable." She stated very calmly.

They all jumped up when Harry slammed his fist against the wooden table. "Unreasonable! You call this betrayal unreasonable."

"It's hardly betrayal," Ginny quipped back.

"Another man! This is the ultimate betrayal!"

"I'm still confused, no one has explained anything. Harry, what happened? Talk to me, maybe I can help," Hermione was going to be a supportive best friend as usual.

"Ask her." He pointed and jabbed his finger in heated accusation. "She left without a word a couple of days ago. I've been out of my mind, thinking the worst, that she was hurt, or worse, dead. Then she glides in here whistling merrily, like I haven't lost sleep over her disappearance. She comes in here with him. Proof of her treacherous actions."

"Um, Harry…why are you pointing at Hedwig?" Hermione was still confused.

"Hedwig found a mate. We're not sure who he belongs to," Ginny explained.

"Aw that's so cute." Hermione beamed at the owls.

"He is an interloper!"

"Harry, they're owls. And you're over-reacting." Ginny said reasonably but received a glare.

"There, there," Hermione patted his shoulder. "I'm sure Hedwig still loves you and you will always be her favorite human."

Harry turned his glare to the object of his distress. "You hurt her and I'll turn you into a feather duster." He threatened the large black owl perched next to Hedwig. It bobbed it's head in response, perhaps trying to calm his beloved's human companion. Hedwig then hopped onto Harry's shoulder and started grooming his wild hair affectionately. He petted her head and stopped trying to eviscerate the other owl with his eyes. "Fine, he can stay, but I'm still upset."
