You wake up to the sound of birds chirping and singing outside your window. Slowly you open your eyes and try to focus on the clock hanging on your bedroom wall, 6 AM. Turning carefully to your side you watch Norma, still sound asleep. Her curls messy, eyes puffy and lips still a little swollen, she still looks like the most beautiful woman in the world. The way she lays there, so peacefully and delicate you wish you could stay in bed and look at her forever.
"I can feel you watching me." she says, her lips curling into a smile as she slowly opens her eyes. "What time is it?"
"It's 6 o'clock. Oh, shit! What about Norman?" you ask feeling slightly panicked, knowing how Norman can get when he doesn't know where his Mother has been.
"He stayed the night at Dylan's."
A relieved sigh escapes your lips and she moves her hand up to your face and begins to gently stroke your face.
"You know you talk in your sleep." she says her smile widening.
"I do not!" you sputter.
"Yes you do, it's cute."
While you feel the heat rising to your cheeks you look into her eyes. They seem to be glowing even brighter blue this morning and you feel unsure if you should bring up last night. Opening your mouth to speak, you hesitate and close it again letting out a soft sigh.
"I should go, I need to open the office in a bit and be home before Norman gets back." she says before flashing you a smile.
Her smile is everything, the way her eyes light up when she does, it gets you ever time and you know it's what makes you fall in love with her over and over again.
She makes her way out of the bed and start to get dressed. You sit up, covering your naked body with the duvet while you watch her Tucking her blouse into her skirt she pauses and looks at you.
"Will you come back to work?"
You wait a second before answering.
"Yes."
She smiles "Good."
"Oh!" you blurt out, just now remembering the fact that your car is still at the motel. "Can I get a ride?" you ask slightly embarrassed.
"You can, but you better hurry, we have to be at the motel before Norman gets home."
When the two of you pull up in front of the motel she hands you the office keys.
"You go and open the office, help yourself to a coffee, I'll be up at the house until Norman get's back okay."
"Okay."
"I'll be back later and bring you something to eat since we left without breakfast."
"Thanks." you smile, before watching her run up the steps to the house.
An hour later she enters the office, holding a small tray with some toast and scrambled eggs. You eat all of it before she tells you which rooms need cleaning and you get to work. All day you catch her sending you sweet smiles while you can't stop thinking about last night. Last night it wasn't rushed or secretive, it was soft and tender. The way you could finally take your time touching her and the way she took her time with you felt different and it felt good.
At the end of your shift you walk back into the office to hand her back the keys.
"Thanks hun." she says as you put the keys down on the desk
"You're welcome." you reply, leaning over the desk so your face is close to hers.
She takes a step back, leaving you hanging awkwardly.
"Sorry, I have to get back to the house, Norman is there and I need to get dinner started."
You can't deny the little sting in your chest when she backed away and you scold yourself inwardly for letting it affect you like this. She told you she loved you yesterday, she even stayed the night and she's been smiling at you all day, so maybe you should stop overthinking.
"Okay, see you tomorrow!" you reply, flashing her a smile before you walk out and drive home.
The next morning when you enter the office she seems occupied, mindlessly giving you keys and instructions before returning her attention back to the screen. The familiar sting in your chest is back and you tell yourself the same thing you told yourself yesterday. She's probably really busy, dealing with motel things and you should just drop it.
Later that day the weather has changed drastically, wind and rain are picking up and it looks a storm is coming. You make your way into the office and she looks up from her screen.
"It looks like we are getting very stormy weather for the rest of the day and night hun, maybe you should go home."
"Oh, okay." you reply.
For some reason it feels like she isn't just sending you home because of the weather, it feels like she doesn't want you around.
"Norma?"
She looks up.
"What hun?"
"Are we okay?"
"Why wouldn't we be?"
You sigh let out a sigh.
"Well because I feel like you don't want me around."
She snorts.
"Don't be silly, of course I want you around, but the rooms are done and I don't want you driving home once this storm hits."
Letting out another sigh you can't shake the feeling that she isn't being completely honest. That she's being distant again like before and all the insecurities and doubts you had seem to resurface.
You walk around the desk, grab her face and press your lips hard onto hers. She gasps but pulls back quickly.
"Hun, stop, we.."
The fact that she pulled away when she could've kissed you back is all the confirmation you need. It's reassuring you that all the fears, doubts and insecurities you had about this were valid. You feel your heart break again, only this time it hurts more. Did she only tell you she loved you to calm you down that night? Did she mean any of it? Did what happened after mean nothing to her? Feeling your mind spiraling fast all you want to do is scream but instead you storm out of the office and into the pouring rain.
The cold rain hits your body hard, but you keep walking towards your car when you hear the faint sound of the office door and her heels on the concrete.
"Hun, come back inside!" she shouts, the rain getting harder and louder.
"Leave me alone Norma!" you shout back, feeling the anger in your chest rise.
"COME BACK!" she shouts, harder than you've ever heard her shout before.
It stops you in your tracks, the rain still coming down hard, hitting your face to the point you can barely see. You turn around and see her standing there under the shelter, crying.
Why is she crying? Two minutes ago she could barely look at you. You're so angry you can't even cry. Angry at her and at yourself for loving her.
"You can't keep doing this Norma! You can't keep doing this to me!"
"Doing what? What am I doing?"
"Fucking with me!"
Your heart rate has gone up drastically, you feel your body begin to shake and a panic attack is creeping up on you. You take deep breath to prevent yourself from crumbling down. You're getting soaked from head to toe, but you don't care, you are passed the point of caring, feeling more broken than ever before.
She walks out from under the shelter and into the pouring rain.
"I'm not fucking with you."
"Norma, just go back. I'm going."
Turning away from her you continue walking towards your car.
"STOP!" her scream desperate and broken.
With her hair dripping wet sticking to her face she continues
"You can't put me in this situation! I told you I'm not ready to have a relationship, I can't do this right now!"
You slowly turn around to face her again, your anger still growing.
"You told me you loved me! Or was that a lie? Fuck Norma, I fucking love you and now I hate myself for it!"
"I never asked you to love me!" she spits back, her voice filled with as much anger as yours.
Throwing her arms up in utter frustration and anger she looks you dead in the eye.
"Okay Go. Im out. I'M DONE!" she cries out before turning around, running out of the rain and back into the office.
You yank the car door open, get in and start the engine while slamming your fists onto the steering wheel "FUCK!" Your body is filled with pain and anger, all you want to do is get the hell out of here as fast as you can. The rain is pouring down heavy and even with your windshield wipers on full speed it's hard to see anything. Groaning in frustration you speed off the gravel and onto the road.
What happens next happens fast, you never see the car coming at you when you drive onto the road and it hits yours with force. You hear the loud crashing sound of metal on metal, feel your body lift from its seat, while your head bangs against the window and everything goes black.
When Norma hears the loud crash her heart stops for a second and she storms out of the office.
"OH GOD NO!"
She runs as fast as she can through the pouring rain, screaming while her tears mix with rain on her face. When she reaches your car the man who crashed his car into yours emerges from his vehicle and Norma can only yell at him.
"CALL A FUCKING AMBULANCE NOW!"
She rushes over to the driver side opening the door, your body falling limp against her.
"Oh god, baby, no please, oh god no!"
She sees blood coming from where your head hit the window while she carefully reaches over to unbuckle your seatbelt.
"Please baby, wake up, please, I need you to wake up, oh god I'm sorry. Please."
She cries holding you to her chest repeating the same pleads over and over. Norman heard the crash and saw his mother run towards the scene and immediately called for an ambulance before running outside.
"Mother, an ambulance is coming, oh god, is she-"
"I DON'T KNOW NORMAN!"
The ambulance arrives and Norma doesn't leave your side as they load you onto the stretcher and into the ambulance.
"I'm coming with her!" she says stepping into the back of the ambulance.
She holds you hand for the whole drive to the hospital, kissing your fingers, whispering the same pleads.
"Please, baby I'm here, please wake up, please be okay."
You hear a voice coming from far away. Trying to focus on the voice you feel it getting closer and you try opening your eyes. Your whole body hurts and your head is throbbing. It feels so hard to open your eyes but you try again. Everything looks blurred and fuzzy but you manage to make out someone holding you hand.
"N-Norma?" you croak.
"Oh god! Baby, shhhhh, don't talk! It's okay, I'm here, I'm here."
Feeling her warm tears drip onto your hand before you close your eyes again.
"So, you ready?"
Norma comes in through the door as you pack up the last of your belongings.
"Yes. I am so done with hospital food. I don't even think they cook it here, I bet it's frozen and they just heat it up."
She laughs and grabs your hand, you turn to look at her. She has been by your hospital bed for the past few days, she looks tires but still beautiful.
"I'm just glad you're okay." she says, giving your hand a gentle squeeze.
You smile at her, you know how lucky you are, a cut to the head, a concussion and a very sore neck, it could have been a lot worse.
"Okay, here are your discharge papers, do you have somewhere to stay for a few days? A family member or friend?" the doctor asks coming in with his paper work.
"Yes. She's coming home with me." Norma replies in a stern voice.
You look at her. This was something you didn't discuss with her and even when she stayed by your side the past few days you're still not sure where you stand after the fight when it felt you'd be out of her life for good.
"Okay good, make sure she stays hydrated, keep a look out for any dizzy spells or sickness and if she displays signs of this please bring her back in."
He says, leaving the papers on the bed before he walks off.
"Great, I get to try out the motel beds." you laugh.
Norma looks at you, her eyes darting around your face before she replies.
"No. You''ll stay in my bed, so I can keep an eye on you."
