An excerpt from an unnamed novel, from an unknown author:
"There are many mysterious creatures in our world, some more akin to us than others. Among those most incredible of them are the drakens, powerful creatures of unknown origins who equate themselves to the mighty dragons of legends, and by their right as well, for they abound with many astounding abilities that allow them to bend the world to their will or to protect it from those who would do so by other means.
Indeed, many call them the guardians of the world, shepherds of life, for they are noble by nature even though they generally stay away from humanity as a rule. Many of them though, those who are of a more human blood, often become a part of the civilized world, leaving their mark wherever they go, often to the great wonderment of everyone who meets them."
From the diary of Arani Shadowsteed, a draken of the Shadowsteed clan, written in 1984:
"I first met her when we were both young fledgelings some century or two ago when her name didn't yet hold such prominence among our kind. Her people, the so-called half-drakes who are almost indistinguishable from normal humans by their lack of scales and horns, are important for our society, for they serve as our agents within the human world, but they aren't always easily accepted by our people.
Kaelen, however, is very special in that regard, for she has grown rather quickly from being considered a weakling by the proud, full blooded drakens, to being one of the most trusted members of our great pack. Some attribute this success to the support she had from her family and friends, but I rather like to say that it was her adventurous spirit and the kindness she displayed for everyone, well, almost everyone she ever met, that gave her such a unique outlook on the world around her.
No story perhaps illustrates Kaelen's nature better than the story of her friendship with the Phantom, a story not many people know about, and yet she told me many times, as I am lucky enough to be called by her one of her best friends."
