Nathalie watches as Gabriel and Emilie dance. Her best friend and her unrequited crush. She knows it over, nobody ever picks her, Emilie always gets what she wants, and this time she wants Gabriel. Who wouldn't want Emilie anyway? From her honey blonde hair, pulled into a pretty French braid with daisies weaved in, to the pair of white heels that went perfectly with her dress, she was perfect.
Emilie watches as Gabriel dances with Nathalie next. Her best friend and her unrequited crush. She knows it's over, this time her parents can't buy it for her. Who wouldn't love Nathalie? From her wavy midnight hair with its defining red streak to her deep purple flats, she was stunning.
Nathalie sat down next to her best friend. He had to choose today because that's what they had all agreed to. It was unfair to both the girls to be strung along which would only lead to more heartbreak.
"Dance with me?" Emilie asked.
Nathalie smiled and accepted Emilie's extended hand.
The prom had been set up as good as a high school prom could be. Fairy lights and balloon arches decorated the room. The music wasn't the best, but what else was to be expected? The punch had only remained alcohol-free for five minutes at most and the food wasn't anything someone would willingly put into their bodies. Yes, it was a perfect end-of-year dance. Sadly, it would end in heartbreak for one of the women.
"No matter what, we will still be friends?" Emilie asks.
"No matter who he chooses," Nathalie agrees.
Emilie and Nathalie are both unsure they can stick to their promise. They want to believe they can, they don't want to lose their friends, but seeing their other friends together when they had a crush on Gabriel, seemed a little unbearable.
Emilie hugged the taller girl closer and rested her head against her chest. They had been close friends for as long as she could remember. It hadn't been unusual for the pair to be close and a few rumors had spread around that they were dating. Emilie didn't want to lose Nathalie.
Nathalie stepped forward and allowed Emilie to pull her closer. She watched as Emilie closed her eyes and relaxed against her chest. Nathalie moved one of her hands to Emilie's head and stroked lightly, careful not to mess up her braid or mess up any of the delicately placed flowers. Nathalie couldn't bear the thought of losing Emilie.
Gabriel watches as the two women dance and a desire grows inside of him. He doesn't want to let either woman go and he knows it's incredibly selfish, greedy, and quite possibly insensitive. Gabriel just can't imagine his life without either one of them because he loves both of them. Emilie is warm, caring, loving, and daring. Nathalie doesn't let any of those traits define her, she is smart, analytical, calculated, yet compassionate all the same. Gabriel knows what he wants, he wants to wake up with the both of them by his side and end the day the same way. Maybe he was going to lose both of them today, yet it was a risk he was willing and was going to take.
Walking up to the two women, they were both snapped out of their daydreams. They didn't know what to expect from Gabriel. Both of them wanted Gabriel to choose them but were almost certain he was going to choose the other.
"I've come to a decision," he tells the women. They both gulp, ready to hear the news that would shatter their heart.
'Just be happy for her' they both tell themselves. They should be happy for their friends, and if Gabriel loves the other and not her, then she wasn't good enough, and she understands.
"What if I had two girls at home?" he suggests, struggling to look at either woman.
It's an idea that neither Emilie nor Nathalie had expected, though, with their first reaction, neither is strongly opposed to the idea.
"Let me guess, nobody knows that?" Nathalie asks, assuming Gabriel doesn't want the rumors that come with being a polyamorous couple. What happens then? If she is just the private girlfriend, while Emilie is the one he flaunts in public?
"No," Gabriel tells Nathalie, "everybody would know. Me and the two lovely ladies that wait for me."
"Everybody would know that the three of us are a couple? Nobody is hiding from the public eye?" Emilie clarifies because that doesn't sound like an idea that Gabriel would ever propose, especially with his parents always being on about the image he represents.
"As long as you two don't mind," Gabriel promises, "I would love for both of you to be my girlfriends."
Emilie and Nathalie turn to each other unsure what to say. Part of them had been prepared for Gabriel to reject both of them but none of them had been prepared for this idea.
"It sounds like a fine preposition," Nathalie finally shrugs.
"After all, I am a stupid girl," Emilie says, sounding like she is finishing Nathalie's statement.
It's an awkward balance to figure out at first. Gabriel trying to figure out even time for his two girlfriends. The separate dates and trying not to show a favorable affection to either one. It's a complicated arrangement but it is what he asked for so he can't complain.
Nathalie and Emilie don't know when they become intertwined with each other but slowly they do. It starts as an unexpected kiss that the two share, a blossoming of feelings that had been undiscovered to that point. Soon it becomes so much more, the friends turn to lovers, each happy to worship Gabriel as well as each other in the bedroom. They hadn't expected it at the beginning of their agreement but it helps everything smooth out. Gabriel no longer takes them on separate dates but they go out as a throuple not caring what anyone thinks of them. A shared love between the three might have been all they really needed.
The three of them love their dynamic, even if nobody else understands it. They all have their partners at home and they could care less if everybody in the world knew that. Though, it was safe to say that when Gabriel's and Emilie's careers took off their relationship was known to most of the world. All of them were content, and Gabriel vowed, he was never losing his girls that waited for him at home, it always made him feel better knowing that.
