Kates POV
"So how is Rick in bed?" Winter asked me. I couldn't believe she just asked me that. Actually nevermind, I could totally believe that. The girls were all looking at me for a response. I laughed nervously.
"Um… he… he's very loving, he always takes care of me" I explained, taking a sip of my drink, hoping that was enough.
"You're lucky, Franklin almost always cums first," Sweets complained. Franklin, her was a nice guy but from what I heard the sex wasnt very good.
"What about you Kate? Have you taken care of him yet?" Candy asked.
"Well… no I haven't, the first time I was on top I kind of… came instantly" I said embarrassingly. The girls laughed as I tried to hide behind my cup again. Taking a sip of soda to avoid eye contact.
"Oh don't be embarrassed Kate, it was your first time on top, you should have seen mine" Winter said.
"I didn't even know you weren't a virgin, '' I confessed.
"Oh no, I've had sex like three or four times, not a lot. Three with my ex boyfriend and the fourth… well… we don't talk about that" Winter explained. We laughed again.
"You know I haven't really talked to him much, you guys met my boyfriend and know him well, why haven't we talked to Rick yet?" Sweets asked.
"Did you want to?" I asked. I got a yes from all three girls. "All right then, I'll go grab him," I said. I then got up and started my search. It wasn't that big of a house. I checked multiple rooms, even the basement where we were earlier but couldn't find him. I ran into Lilly and Humphrey though as they and many other people were watching Mooch chug a bunch of bottles. He finished a huge one and everyone cheered.
"I AM RUSSIAN BEAR!" he yelled. Everyone started to urge him to do more but I wasn't interested. I tapped Lilly on the shoulder and she turned around.
"Oh Kate, what's up?" she asked.
"Have you seen Rick?" I asked. Her smile faded as soon as I asked her.
"He's… in the backyard" she said.
"Alright, thanks" I said. Backyard? What would he be doing back there? It's freezing outside. I slid open the door and took a look around. Scanning the yard for anyone. But it was a ghost town. I shut the door and went back inside, and back over to Lilly. "He's not there," I said.
"Huh? He should be in one of the chairs" Lilly said. I shook my head. Lilly then quickly walked over to the backdoor and outside. Why did she look panicked? I followed her and stood next to her as we scanned the backyard again.
"See? He's not here" I said.
"Maybe he got up," Lilly said.
"What are you talking about? What's wrong?" I asked. She was starting to worry me.
"Kate, don't be mad at me but Rick wasn't feeling well, I wanted to leave but Rick didn't want us to, he didn't want to be a bother" Lilly explained. I felt a small surge of anger toward my sister.
"Why didn't you come and get me?" I growled.
"He asked me not to," Lilly said. I then ran over to one of the chairs to see if maybe he stumbled behind a bush or something.
"Rick? Rick?" I called.
"I'll check inside," Lilly called from the porch. I nodded and continued to look by the mini bar and such. Then I realized that I could just call him. I pulled out my phone and swiped to his name but before I could call him, he called me. I answered as fast as I could.
"Hello? Rick, where are you? I haven't seen you" I said. I was praying that he would tell me that he's inside, safe. But he didn't say that. He spoke in low, shaky words, so low that I almost didn't hear him.
"D-d-dont… d-drink… a-a-a-anything" he said. My heart dropped as I started to put the pieces together. Was he drugged? Where was he?
"What? Rick, where are you? You're scaring me" I said. The next words I heard shattered my heart.
"I–i-i-... l-l-l-l-love… y-you… K-K-k-k-Kate'' he said.
"Rick? RICK!" I screamed into the phone. I then got a notification. He sent me his location. It wasn't far, it was about a five minute drive. I started booking it back to the house and dashed inside. I ran over to the crowd and grabbed Humphrey. "Humphrey we have to-"
"Woah, Kate what's wrong? Were you outside? You're freezing" Humphrey said.
"Humphrey, Rick is in trouble, we have to go now" I said.
"Wait what?" Humphrey said. I grabbed his hand and dragged him over to the front door where I ran into Lilly.
"I can't find him, Kate," she said.
"I know where he is, but we have to hurry," I cried.
"Why what happened, where is he?" Lilly quizzes but I didn't answer, I just dragged Humphrey iver to the front door where I saw Garth and his buddies coming in.
"Woah, Kate. just the girl I was looking for" he smiled. I froze as I put another piece together. Why was he just coming back? He was here earlier so why did he leave?
"What did you do to him?" I asked.
"Huh? What do you-" was all he said before I punched him, making him fall down the front steps. I went to hit him again but Humphrey grabbed me and held me back.
"WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU DO TO HIM?" I screamed. I turned to look at his friends as Garth stood back up. As he did he grabbed the stair railing and I saw…
"Is that blood?" I asked quietly as I felt a tear fall down my face. Garth didn't answer. Everybody was speechless. I shook free from Humphrey and ran to my car. Lilly and Humphrey followed. I sat in my seat and fumbled for my keys. Lilly sat in the front.
"Kate, do you want to tell me what's going on?" Lilly asked as Humphrey sat in the back. I just tapped on Rick's location and handed the phone to Lilly.
"Give me directions" I said as I put the car in drive and sped off as fast as the car would take me.
"Okay, okay" Lilly said. Those were the only words exchanged as we drove. Tears were falling down my face as I drove. I didn't want to know what I was about to find. I was so scared. Please be okay, please be okay. Why was there blood on Garth's hand? What did he do to him? If he hurt Rick in any way I would kill him. After we got out of the neighborhood there was nothing more than a silo in the distance. "I think that's it," Lilly said. I pulled up and started crying instantly.
"Oh my God" I said as I stepped out of the car. Rick was down in the dirt, laying in a pool of his own blood, frost on his back from the cold. I ran over to him and turned him over. I cried as I held him close.
"Could Garth…" Humphrey said. I didn't hear him though, I was holding the love of my life as close as I could. I then realized something. I could see my breath, Lilly's, and Humphreys, but Rick…
"He's not breathing" I said.
"We gotta get him to a hospital," Humphrey said as he grabbed his arm. I stood up and helped him.
"Lilly, get the door!" I yelled. Lilly ran over and opened the back door. We put Rick in the back and I hopped in next to him. "Humphrey, can you drive?" I asked. Humphrey nodded and jumped in the front. Lilly was already in. Humphrey sped off to the hospital. As he drove I started looking for a blood source. I kept searching, looking around the bloodiest part of his clothes. I Took off his jacket to get to his stomach, Eventually I found a stab wound. It wasn't bleeding that much though, from the looks of it he had bled all he could. Still I kept pressure on it as I cried.
"Is he okay?" Lilly asked, turning around to face us.
"No, he's still not breathing," I said.
"We're almost there," Humphrey called back to me. I leaned in to Rick as I held his wound.
"Rick, if you can hear me, please don't die, I don't know what I'll do without you, please… I-I love you" I whimpered as I cried into him. It was another five minutes until we got to the hospital. Humphrey parked in the front and stepped out. Me and Lilly did the same. We then opened the door on Rick's side and Humphrey helped me take him out of the car.
"Lilly, go tell them we're coming" Humphrey said.
"Okay" Lilly said as she ran into the hospital. Me and Humphrey carried Rick as fast as we could. It took about thirty seconds to get inside.
"Rick, we're here" I said. Lilly ran back over to us.
"They're coming," she said. Humphrey and I didnt respond. We just kept carrying Rick over to the door. We waited for a good thirty seconds until the door burst open. There were four doctors wheeling a stretcher.
"Put him on," the doctor ordered. Me and Humphrey laid him on the stretcher and let them take the love of my life away. Putting an oxygen mask on him and wheeling him away as I put my hands over my muzzle and cried into them. Humphrey rubbed my back as Lilly hugged me.
"I'm sure he'll be fine Kate" Lilly said.
"He wasn't breathing" I whispered as I looked down at my hands. They were bloody which means…
"Kate, your face," Humphrey said. Luckily there was a bathroom in the lobby. I walked inside and Lilly followed me. I looked in the mirror to see that my face was stained with Rick's blood. I turned the sink on and started washing my hands first. I sobbed as I washed them.
"Kate?" Lilly called quietly. I turned to her. "Are you okay?" she asked. I choked on my own cries as I answered.
"R-Rick he… I d-don't think he's a-a-alive" I said. I then started bawling my eyes out as I fell to the floor. Lilly ran over and hugged me.
"Kate, you can't think like that," Lilly said.
"Do you know what his last words were? He said I love you Kate" I told Lilly. I then looked into my sister's eyes as I felt my lip quiver.
"Kate," Lilly whispered. She then hugged me again as we both started crying. We held each other and cried for a good five minutes until our cries died down to sobs.
"I don't know what I'm gonna do without him," I whispered.
"We'll all miss him… but he's not dead, he can't be '' Lilly said. We made eye contact again. "I promise, now… go wash the blood out of your fur" she said. I nodded and stood up. I looked in the mirror and started scrubbing my face. It didn't take long but soon I was clean and stepped out.
"You guys okay?" Humphrey asked.
"Not exactly," Lilly answered.
"Rick's like you Kate, he's tough. Hell pull through" Humphrey said. I nodded. "Listen, I was gonna head back and pick my car up, are you okay if Lilly drives your car?" he asked.
"Do you have your license?" I asked Lilly.
"Yeah," Lilly answered. I nodded my head and then sat down.
"Alright, we'll be back" Humphrey said as he hugged me. I hugged him back.
"Thank you" I whispered into his shoulder. Humphrey broke the hug and patted my shoulder, and then left. Lilly followed. She was a good driver but she was still fairly new. She'd driven my mom home one time when she got surgery and then she drove me from places when I was too tired to do it myself. While she was going to get her car though I thought about Rick's truck. Who would grab that? I had bigger things to worry about. I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket. I pulled it out to see it was a text from Winter.
W. hey, where did you run off to? You and Rick aren't busy are you?
K. I'm at the hospital, Rick was stabbed.
W. is he okay?
K. no, he wasn't breathing when we brought him here. He might be dead. I'm so scared.
W. Do you want me to come over there?
K. no, just let the girls know and we'll talk later.
W. okay Kate. Let me know what happens. I wish you two the best.
K. thank you.
I closed my phone and put it in my pocket after checking the time. It was 8:34 what was I gonna do? I needed to call Ricks mom or dad to let them know but I didn't have their number. But Angel, she could tell them. I went to grab my phone again but the double doors opened up again and one of the doctors came over to me.
"You were the one that brought in the bleeding kid right?" he asked.
"Yes that was me, is he okay?" I asked.
"He'll be fine but he's lost a lot of blood. Any chance you're an O positive?" he asked. I nodded. "Come with me" he instructed. The doctor then led me down the hallway quickly.
"So he's alive?" I asked.
"Yeah, his heart rate was low when you brought him and he was barely breathing, but he's alive," the doctor said. I felt a huge wave of relief as he gave me the news. The doctor then led me into a room where Rick was. He had an oxygen mask on him still with bandages wrapped around his stomach. "Sit here," the doctor said. He pointed to a seat next to the bed. I sat down and looked at the love of my life. This was hard to look at. With the light now I noticed that his face was bruised. Did that son of a bitch punch him too? Stabbing him wasn't enough?
"When will he wake up?" I asked.
"Not sure, it could be days or weeks, but he needs this blood now. Are you okay with this?" the doctor asked.
"Yes, do what you need to" I said.
"Okay good, take off that sweatshirt" he ordered. I did as he said and then he held my arm, feeling for my veins and then rubbing it with a wipe. "Little pinch" he said. He then stuck the needle in my arm and connected it to a tube that led to Rick's arm. Almost immediately I saw my blood go through the tube and into him. "Thank you, you might have just saved his life. What's your name?" the doctor asked.
"Kate, my name is Kate. I'm his girlfriend" I said.
"I'm sorry you have to see this… what happened?" he asked.
"Someone… drugged him, brought him out to one of the silos outside of town and…" I didn't finish my sentence. I just rubbed my other hand across his chest. My poor boyfriend.
"He's lucky you found him when you did, a couple more minutes and he wouldn't be here" the doctor said. I closed my eyes and whimpered. Thank God he's alive. If he would have died then… I felt myself grow dizzy as I lost my blood. "Yeah, you'll be dizzy for a bit. I'll have some food brought over to you, but you're doing great" the doctor said. I nodded slowly and then turned back to Rick.
"Can you… give us a minute?" I asked.
"Of course," the doctor said, stepping out. I just stared at Rick as I felt my tears building up again. The heart rate monitor going a slow sixty-eight beats per minute. He must be really weak. What did that fucker do to you?
"Rick… I'm so glad you're alive… the others will be happy to hear… Garth… I'm gonna make him pay… that mother fucker" I growled. I lost my balance in the chair and leaned forward a bit before catching myself. How much longer until this transfer is done? It was whatever though, as long as Rick is okay by the end of this. They can take all the blood I have as long as Rick gets what he needs. But he's bigger than I am. My blood isn't gonna be enough. Doesn't this fucking hospital have blood on stand by? This is ridiculous. I closed my eyes tightly and breathed heavily as I tried not to pass out. This isn't right. We should be at his place right now making love but instead he's here suffering because of that piece of shit. I'll kill him when I see him again.
"Are you okay?" I heard someone ask. I was lifted from the side of the bed to see the doctor again.
"Im… fine" I said weakly.
"Okay, you've given enough blood" he said as he took the needle out of my arm and bandaged it up.
"No… he needs… more" I said.
"He does, and thanks to you he has enough to keep him alive. Don't worry we're gonna call the parents and have them come down" he said.
"Don't you have… more?" I asked.
"Yes but we need a signature before we can give it, the reason we asked you is because you brought him in" he said. What if we didn't have the same blood type? Would they have let him die? Fuck this place. "We're gonna call the parents but in the meantime you need to eat something" he said. He then got up and left. I leaned back over to Rick and rested my hand on his chest again.
"Rick… I love you too" I said as a tear fell down my cheek. "Please come back to me…" after a couple of minutes a nurse wheeled a cart into the room. It had a sandwich and a cup of apple juice on it.
"Get your strength up" she said before walking out. I sat up and brought the cart closer to me. This looked good, but I wasn't hungry. But I had to eat. As I was deciding whether or not to force myself, the doctor came in again.
"The parents are on their way, things will get better once they show up I promise" he said. I nodded and then he left the two of us alone again. With this bit of hope I found the small urge to eat, so I took a bite out of the sandwich. Eating it until the whole thing was gone. Poor Rick. I hate seeing him like this. I hope he wakes up soon. After I was done eating I grabbed his hand and held it.
"Hey… guess the tables have turned huh? Remember when I was in this position? Well I guess I wasn't this bad and yours could have been avoided… I just want you to know that I'm here… and I'll take care of you, just like you did with me. I am gonna take care of you, you're gonna get better, and then everything will be fine… but you gotta wake up" I said. I looked over at the heart rate monitor and saw that his heart rate was still dangerously low. I started to sob as the truth dawned on me. He wasn't waking up for a while. "I love you Rick" I sobbed as I continued holding his hand. Is this how he felt? The day of the accident? Did he feel crushed? Like no matter how much he was here it didn't matter because the damage was done? Did he feel useless… alone? Like no time was passing as the clock slowly ticked, second by second, not getting at all closer to his well being? Like I would never see him well again? I continued to sob until I heard the curtain to the room open. I turned to see Humphrey, Lilly, and Rick's parents. Rick's mom ran over to the bed, grabbing her son as she burst into tears.
"Oh my God, Rick?" she called. His dad came over to her and patted her shoulder as he stared down at his son.
"He's alive, but he was in worse condition when we found him. The doctor said he would have been dead if we didn't get him when we did" I explained. Rick's mom looked up at me, rage in her eyes.
"When you found him? You are his friends, you are his fucking girlfriend! Where the fuck were you while this was happening?" she yelled. I froze, I didn't know what else to say. I couldn't think of anything.
"I… I didn't-"
"He was there for you when you were here, and you guys were nowhere to be found when he needed you," she said.
"Delores" his dad said, trying to calm her but she wouldn't listen.
"No, you kids are fake, what did you leave him? I heard he was drugged so where the fuck were you? Why didn't you check on him, he is always there for you guys and you do this?" she ranted.
"Miss I- '' Humphrey started but she didn't care.
"Get out, all of you. You have no right to be here, you act like you care now. Look at him, your late, he's nearly dead and now your here to act like you finally give a fuck, get out, I never want to see you again!" she yelled at us. Slowly I stood up, being careful not to fall as I was still light headed. I then limped across the room when I heard Rick's mom call me. "Kate?" I turned to her, hoping she had come to her senses quickly. "Don't come around anymore, I thought you were different but this… he almost died because of you so don't come near him, If you come near him again I swear…" she said not finishing her sentence. I whimpered as I ran out of her room and to the lobby and then outside. Humphrey and Lilly chased after me and then finally caught up to me when I sat on an outside bench, balling my eyes out.
"Kate… I'm sure-"
"No Lilly, she's right, where the fuck was I? Talking bullshit with my friends, having a blast while he was getting stabbed? He doesnt deserve me. I'm a piece of shit too" I cried.
"Now, Kate, that's just not true," Humphrey said. I didn't acknowledge him. I just continued crying. Everything she said in there was spot on. I was useless. The one time he needed me and I wasn't there. Sure I got him here in time but this all could have been avoided if… I sniffed up my tears as a sudden realization came to my mind.
"Lilly, why did you not tell me Rick wasn't feeling well?" I asked.
"Huh?" she asked back.
"When Rick wasn't feeling well, why didn't you come and get me?" I asked again.
"I told you, he didn't want me to" she said.
"Bullshit, I don't care what he said, you should have told me. We were at a party and he started feeling sick and you didn't fucking come and get me? Did it not fucking occur to you that maybe he was drugged? That maybe he needed to leave? If you weren't gonna get me then why didn't you sit with him?" I asked angrily.
"Because me and Humphrey were in the kitchen watching Mooch" she admitted. "I was gonna check in on him but-" I cut her off when I stood up and slapped her across the face. I was so angry. She held her cheek and looked up at me as Humphrey starred in awe.
"Was that really more important than the guy who cares for you? Than the one who always has your guys back? You're no better Humphrey, regardless of how much he didn't want you to get me you should have. YOU SHOULD HAVE TOLD ME!" I screamed. Lilly panted before getting up and running away crying. Now I feel bad. Humphrey stood up.
"There are more important things at stake than pointing fingers" he said angrily and then chased after Lilly. Now I felt alone again. Alone, heart broken, dizzy, and crushed. I sat down on the bench again as the cold wind continued to blow and cried. What a fucking disaster. So many things have gone wrong. How would any of it get better? My family had drifted apart so much with no hope of getting back together, the future never looked so dark.
