Kate's POV
"Kate you're almost ready right? We don't wanna be late!" mom called to me from the bottom of the stairs as I was rolling up the sleeves to my shirt. I was wearing my usual dark skinny jeans with a brown belt and navy blue shirt. Since it was supposed to be chilly later I also went ahead and grabbed a red and black checkered button up to throw over it. Normally when I wore this it was unbuttoned because it looked better that way but it also was an extra layer. Most importantly though I made sure that I had my gown for the graduation.
"Yeah mom, I'm ready!" I called back. I stuck my head out of my room to call to her and saw Lilly walking down the steps, giving me a quick glance before realizing I wasn't talking to her. She was wearing light skinny jeans with a yellow T-shirt. She looked cute but it didn't matter since we were all going to graduation anyway. Sadly though Lilly would be graduating next year and so that really only left me, Humphrey, Shaky, and Rick who were graduating. Speaking of Rick.
"Rick, you almost done in there?" I asked as I turned to the bathroom. He stepped out and looked absolutely sexy. Over the past three weeks he had been eating again, building himself up and even working out a bit once he began to gain his weight back. Him and Humphrey had begun going to the gym and even I had gone with them once or twice. Now it had paid off and he looked better than ever. Not sick, not skinny, not like he had just woken up from a coma. He looked absolutely perfect. He wore black skinny jeans with his usual belt and a dark gray button up. He also wore his usual wrist watch on his left arm and he stepped out. He looked way older than he was but that was always a thing with him. Again I think that's why I liked him so much. He was just mature.
"Yep, all done. You look amazing" he said, stopping in front of me. I smiled, looking him up and down.
"Speak for yourself sexy" I said before wrapping my arms around him and pressing my lips against his. He chuckled as he kissed me back, wrapping my arms around my lower back and holding me close. As we kissed, mom called for me again.
"Come on guys, we gotta get there early" she called. Our lips parted and I sighed before putting my muzzle on Rick's shoulder to call back.
"We're coming!" I called. I then went back to go face to face with Rick as we continued to hold each other. "You got your gown right?" I asked. He nodded with a smile.
"Yeah, right next to yours' ' he said. Rick never ended up going back to school to finish up the year. Instead he just simply called to tell them he couldn't make it in due to his condition. I was the one who picked up his paperwork at the office that stated they will allow him to graduate as long as he picks up some classes to make up his work over the summer. I was bummed about it but he just wanted everything over and done with. Can't say I blamed him.
Rick did show up for graduation photos however. By that point he had already begun to look better and so he was comfortable showing up. There he picked up his gown and such and now he was ready to walk for his diploma. It had been three weeks since he began his recovery and my God did his body work fast. Not that he needed much to begin with but I was grateful for it.
I let go of Rick, breaking our embrace and then walked over to my closet to grab our two packs. Like Rick said his was right next to mine which I handed him and then went to put on my shoes. Rick had already been wearing his usual dress boots and so he simply sat next to me as I put my shoes on.
"Ready to go?" he asked.
"Oh yeah, ready" I smiled. I stood up, making sure my tail wasn't a mess and then began my way over to the stairs as Rick followed. Once we were down there mom looked like she was in the biggest rush of her life.
"Finally you're down here. Whose car are you taking?" she asked. I turned to Rick.
"Do you wanna drive?" I asked. He shrugged.
"Up to you" he replied.
"I'll ride with mom and dad, you guys still want to do something later right?" Lilly asked before taking a sip from her water bottle. She must've just gotten it out of the fridge since it seemed fogged up.
"Definitely" I said. Just then Rick passed me and took his keys off the key hook next to the front door. I guess that solves that problem.
"Alright guys, c'mon we gotta get goin" mom urged.
"Relax honey, we still got about thirty minutes" dad said as he went for his keys.
"You relax! This is a big moment for me" mom replied before going over to the door. She followed Rick outside who waited for me to come out. Lilly and I were the last ones. I asked if she had her keys to which she replied no but I didn't have them either. Luckily Rick waited for us so he locked the door himself. Yes, mom had a key made for him.
"You sure you don't wanna ride with us?" Rick asked Lilly.
"You know what I think I will since mom seems more antsy than usual" Lilly answered as we began walking over to Rick's truck.
"Well you know she's been waiting for this moment since the day we were born" I commented.
"We, I'm not graduating just yet" Lilly replied.
"I know but you still got next year" I said as I climbed into the truck. Lilly sat in the back and buckled up. I noticed Rick telling my parents that Lilly was riding with us and then got in himself.
"It's so weird that my boyfriend is gonna be out of school a whole year before I am," Lilly said, which didn't even cross my mind until now.
"I mean it's not like you guys were spending much time in school anyway. Just hang out after, he'll probably still be your ride home" Rick said as he began to back out of the driveway.
"Oh God I haven't thought about that. Lilly you might be using my car soon because I'm not gonna wanna get up" I said.
"I'll probably be getting my own soon anyway. I'll be seventeen i a few months" she said happily.
"What kind of car would you even want?" Rick asked. Lilly shrugged.
"Whatever's cheaper," she answered. Rick chuckled as he began to drive to the school.
"Yeah, remember my first car? It wasn't the best thing in the world but it got me around" he explained, making Lilly laugh. I on the other hand didn't know what he was talking about, or the fact that he had another car before this truck.
"Yeah, I remember you showing up in this, it was so hot out that day and my jaw dropped when you pulled up. You looked so fucking hot stepping out of this" Lilly said, catching me by surprise. Rick laughed.
"Alright Lilly, what I'm saying is that yeah your first car isn't normally the best, but once you get everything in order you'll want something better" he explained which made sense but…
"My car isnt bad" I said.
"Like I said, normally your first car isn't the best thing in the world but yours is pretty nice" Rick replied. Lilly giggled.
"Rick, you should've seen Kate on her seventeenth birthday. Mom and dad called her out to the front and her car was just sitting out there with a bow on it. I've never heard her squeal like that before. Her tail was wagging like crazy and she was hopping everywhere" Lilly described making me just a little embarrassed. Rick however chuckled.
"I remember you telling me that Kate got a car. Never about her being so happy though, I bet it was cute" he said before giving me a side glance and a smile. I smiled back with a small blush before he fully turned back to the road.
When we finally did get to the school most of the parking spots were already taken so we parked near the end of the parking lot so that we could park next to my parents. No sign of anyone else we knew though. Rick and I scrambled to put our gowns on as mom began getting her phone ready for pictures, her tail was wagging the entire time. That was something I rarely ever saw.
Once we were ready we walked over to the building where we noticed a sign saying to walk to the football field where the graduation would be held. I guess it was for people who didn't sit through the assembly on the last day of class. I remember being a bit sad that day, leaving grade school behind was a huge leap, and part of me would miss walking from class to class, greeting my teachers and going through the day. But the other part of me was happy I didn't have to deal with any of the bullshit that school brung either.
We made our way over, passing some students that were either walking slower than us or just stopping for pictures with their parents. I spotted Candy along the way who gave a wave to me. I waved back with an excited smile and kept walking. I also noticed some people staring and whispering to each other, not because of me though, but because of Rick and his first appearance at the school since his last fight with Garth. I just hoped we could get through this without any bullshit.
When we got out to the field we noticed a bunch of chairs with envelopes on them, each containing the name of who they went to. Thanks to the fact that they were in alphabetical order we found mine pretty quickly. They were according to last names so Rick was ten letters away from me. I saw worry in his eyes when he realized we had to split up which not even I knew what to do here.
"Why don't you just go get yours and come back?" mom suggested as she placed a hand on his shoulder and tried to comfort him.
"I can't, someone is gonna come and get us to walk according to each row. Right Kate?" Rick asked, making sure he was correct. I nodded sadly.
"Oh well…" mom started, not knowing what to say,
"It's okay, you guys enjoy yourselves I'll… I'll go find my seat" Rick said before walking away. The sight saddened me and the others but I knew there was nothing we could really do.
"I'll never stop feeling for that boy," mom said before turning to me. "Oh baby you look so cute" she said, instantly changing the subject. I bit my lip and sighed.
"Yeah… Do you think he's gonna be alright?" I asked. I felt a hand on my back and turned to see Lilly was there.
"Yeah, he's been through worse," she said. She was definitely right about that. It took around fifteen minutes but eventually everything got started with the principal walking up on stage and welcoming everyone. He walked up, turning on the mic and clearing his throat.
"Welcome everyone to the graduation of our 2015 class, I want to congratulate everyone for getting through the years and this year in particular. I know it's been a rough one, we've had some ups and downs, and some of us are not here due to recent tragedies and for that I want to take a moment of silence to remember them for coming to school and making us smile, making us happy, and to make sure that they aren't forgotten" he explained before bowing his head. The whole time I couldn't stop thinking about who he was thinking of. Garth or Angel because he said they but Garth would have been the only one graduating. As for Mindy I wasn't sure what grade she was in but I knew that she definitely didn't make me smile, and I could feel eyes on me as I kept my head down. So much death… and it was all on me. It was something that I would never get over and part of me felt ashamed that I was here walking as if nothing happened. But what else was I supposed to do? Stop living my life on behalf of them? Fuck them, the only one I cared about was Angel and for that I would never stop thinking about it.
"Thank you, I'm going to call everyone up according to the row they are picked. Someone will come to line you up and then each row will get called up name by name. You will receive your diploma and a picture will be taken. I want to thank you all again for another year and I want to wish you all the best of luck" the principal said before giving a signal that had someone begin to play the typical graduation song over a loudspeaker. From there on out there the lines had begun to form as they were picked and names began being called. My heart raced the whole time as they got closer and closer to mine. Eventually though my row was picked out and I offered a smile to my parents before going with the small line over to the stage. I saw Winter get her diploma and I cheered for her, but now it was my row and the suspense was killing me. One after the next the kid got called up ahead of me before finally I was in front. I stood waiting to get called as if it was the biggest deal ever when finally after what felt like forever it happened.
"Kate Hunter" he called, and just like that I could hear my parents cheering from the audience along with my sister and a few others. I was able to pick up Rick's voice as I walked on stage, feeling extremely nervous. Once I got to the middle my principle was waiting there with my diploma and his hand extended. I grabbed it, giving it a shake while I took my diploma. "Congratulations Kate, I'm so happy for you" he smiled.
I smiled back and then turned to the camera where there was a quick flash and then I was on my way, giving mom and dad a glance as I walked over and then giving a small wave. As fast as I was up there, I was down, running over to my mother where she hugged me and showered me with kisses, in tears. As she hugged me I hugged her back with a smile.
"Thank you so much mom" I said, making sure to really seal in that good experience for her. She released her grip on me and then I went to hug my dad who gave me a similar treatment.
"I'm so proud of you sweetie," he said. I hugged him back, nuzzling him as I did with mom and then when he let go I turned to Lilly who offered her own smile.
"Can't wait to trade places" she said with crossed arms. I laughed and then turned back to the stage where others where continuing to get called up. When they finally got to the R's I waited for Rick to be called. I could see him lined up along the stage, waiting for his moment. Humphrey had already gone up, looking handsome as always and giving a smile for his photo. I really couldn't wait to meet up after this. When Rick finally was called my parents and I all cheered happily. Rick walked over, shaking the principles hand and then turning for his picture. It was taken and then he walked off, looking off into the crowd as I did just moments before but… I knew who he was looking for. The sight saddened me and it was really subtle, but after his glance he kept walking, sadly to his own spot I had no idea why.
We continued the tradition until everyone was called. Shaky, Candy, Sweets. Those were really the only ones left that I was waiting for. I kept looking at my diploma the whole time, thinking about all my years in school. From when I was a small pup dicking around with crayons to halfway falling asleep in class, trying to survive until the next marking period. I did it, and no one could say otherwise. I closed my eyes and exhaled happily, knowing it was over, but again part of me would miss certain things about school. Either way though the fun stuff was gone a long time ago. Mostly Christmas parties we would have, school field trips. Those types of things. But they only were ever around during elementary school. When all was said and done we headed off. Humphrey ended up catching us as we were walking, Myra right behind him who took a moment to say hi to mom.
"Can you believe it, we're finally done with this bullshit" Humphrey smiled. I laughed as Lilly walked alongside me, only offering a giggle.
"Not all of us," I said, turning to my sister.
"I'll make it, you just wait" she replied. I giggled and then turned back to Humphrey.
"You didn't see Rick did you?" I asked. I had tried looking for him but I kinda lost him in the crowd and figured we would just meet at the cars.
"What about me?" Rick asked as he ran up and squeezed between Humphrey and I.
"There you are, why didn't you come over to us after you were called?" I asked. Rick continued to walk beside us as he scratched his head and looked away for a moment.
"I uh… I don't know, I just didn't want to ruin the family moment" he answered. I felt mostly confused by his answer, my face showing so as I proceeded to reply to him.
"Ruin it? What do you mean ruin it?" I asked. Humphrey stayed quiet as he also continued to walk next to us.
"Well it just seemed like a happy moment for you guys is all, and I didn't want to intrude on that. I mean come on, parents wait years for the moment their kid graduates and I didn't want to take that from yours, or pull their attention away from you" Rick explained. I saw what he was talking about but I didn't agree with it. I went to say something but was interrupted when Shaky showed up with all smiles.
"Hey guys, you looked good up there. Ready to go and celebrate?" he asked excitedly. Me and Humphrey both laughed.
"You bet" I said before turning to Rick. "We'll talk about this later," I said. He simply shrugged.
"Did I miss something?" Shaky asked as his smile faded a bit. I shook my head.
"No, do you guys know what you want to do?" I asked. Shaky chuckled.
"Well I don't know about you guys but I already told my dad the plans for today and have spent all day just getting ready for graduation so I haven't eaten. So did you guys want to eat something?" he asked. I turned to Rick, then Humphrey and then Lilly.
"I haven't eaten either," Humphrey said.
"We only had cereal" Lilly added. I then turned to Rick who I Know didn't eat today. While me and Lilly were downstairs watching TV he was still asleep.
"Sounds good," he said.
"Okay, where?" I asked. I began scanning the group again, our cars coming into sight as we turned the corner of the building and began entering the parking lot.
"Wild wings?" Shaky suggested. Humphrey winced.
"Here's the thing about that though, it's twelve dollars for a six piece" he said.
"Are you joking?" I asked. Humphrey shook his head.
"No," he replied. I then turned to Shaky with a smirk.
"I mean I think it's worth it" he said. '
"Well Rick, we already know your vote, anyone else?" I asked. Lilly began to hum, pulling me and Humphrey's attention.
"Burger?" she asked.
"You know what's great about my place is that it has all this stuff and it's all really good," Rick explained, making me laugh and Shaky smile.
"Are you guys okay with Texas Roadhouse again?" I asked. I was fine with it but we had been eating it often as Rick made his recovery. I was more than thankful to say that it helped.
"Now you know I can always go for some chili, '' Shaky smiled as his tail began to wag. He wasn't the only one, Rick's Was wagging as well as Humphrey's but his was wagging only slightly. I guess it was settled.
"Perfect because my car is over there, meet ya?" Shaky asked as he stopped, which made us also stop.
"Yeah, see ya there" Rick said. Shaky and Humphrey did a quick clap up and then he began walking to his car, Humphrey turning to Lilly.
"Mine is over there as well, wanna ride with me?" he asked Lilly. Lilly turned to me with a smile and put an arm around Humphrey.
"See ya Kate" she smiled. I giggled and waved as the two began to walk away.
"And then there were two" Rick said as he continued to walk, it wasn't long before we got to our cars though and mom and dad turned to us both.
"So I guess this is where we part ways?" mom asked. I nodded.
"Sadly" I answered. Mom seemed saddened by this, making dad take notice.
"Don't worry, we can celebrate with her another time, let the kids enjoy their newly found freedom" he said. Mom looked over at me again and smiled.
"Watch a movie or two when you get back?" she asked. I smiled as my tail now began to wag,
"Sure" I answered. We hugged and then I guess she shifted her attention to Rick. She broke the hug and then walked over, hugging him as well. He hugged her back and then mom broke it to brush his face and look into his eyes.
"Why didn't you come back to us sweetie?" she asked. He shrugged. Mom knew it was a lie though and he was lying to be nice. She looked over to me and then pulled away from him. "It's okay, you don't have to tell me," she said. Rick stayed silent and then looked over to his truck. I could tell he was uncomfortable.
"See ya later" I said.
"Alright sweet pea, we'll see ya tonight" dad said as he gave me his own hug.
"Bye guys" Rick said as he climbed inside his truck. Once he shut the door mom asked me something.
"Did he tell you anything?" she asked.
"Not much, '' I answered. Mom didn't seem satisfied with that though. "I'm gonna ask him about it now and I'll tell you tonight okay?" I said. Mom nodded and then I went over to the truck, climbing inside. Once I was all buckled in Rick put the car in drive and we were off.
As we drove down the road and finally made it past all the roads trying to get to their cars I sighed and looked over to Rick who kept his eyes on the road. "I know there's something you're not telling me, you know you can tell me anything right?" I asked. Rick hesitated.
"Yes" he said shortly but nervously.
"So what is it?" I asked, already knowing what the problem was.
"Kate I… I just don't want to talk about it right now. Enjoy your day" he said. My day? It was his day too. It wasn't fair for him to section himself off in such a way.
"Rick-"
"Kate please… I don't want to talk about it right now. We can later but just… not right now" he said with a crack in his voice. I stared at him sadly for a moment and then also turned to the road. I tossed my robe and hat in the back of the truck as Rick had already done, and then reached for my flannel.
"It's supposed to be cold out later. Do you have a jacket?" I asked.
"Yeah, in the back" Rick answered. Again it was silent, and it would've stayed that way if I didn't try to brighten the mood.
"You want to go to the same college right? So we don't have to split up?" I said. Rick smiled which showed it was somewhat working.
"I would never leave you" he said as he patted my leg. Wasn't that the truth. I smiled warmly at him.
"What do you think you wanna go for?" I asked. He shrugged.
"Well you know I've always been into horror, and Humphrey has already been talking about screenplays and all that. I think me and him will go for the same thing. What about you?" Rick asked. I thought for a moment.
"Honestly… I think I want to write too. But… books" I answered. Rick seemed a little surprised.
"Books huh?" he asked.
"You read books," I said. He snickered.
"I know, I just didn't take you for a writer, '' he replied.
"What's the matter? Too sexy?" I asked as I pressed my boobs together. Rick and I shared a laugh and then he replied to me.
"Possibly. But I'll support you no matter what" he explained.
"I know you will," I said as I reached for his cheek. As best as he could while he drove he nuzzled against my hand as he exhaled. It was good to know that my touch had the same effect on him as he did on me.
"Kate, I promise you that I'll give you the best life that I can, and I'll love you the whole way there" he said suddenly. Again I smiled.
"I don't doubt that," I said. For the rest of the ride we talked about his summer classes and how I would help him out the rest of the way. By the time we finally pulled up to the restaurant it was night and the temperature had indeed dropped. Rick hopped out and grabbed his jacket from the back. It wasn't his brown one though, that was still at the house. Instead it was his black dress, one which paired with his outfit made me want to attack him. He just looked so hot. As he put it on Humphrey and Lilly walked over as Humphrey breathed into his hands, now sporting a black leather jacket and my sister a red sweatshirt.
"None of you told me it was gonna be this cold," he complained.
"You didn't get my text?" I asked.
"I probably did," he replied just as Shaky pulled up next to us. I didn't see Humphrey's car so I assumed he parked around the corner. He stepped out and walked over to us happily.
"Is Stephanie joining us?" Rick asked.
"No, she had to take care of her grandma," he answered. Lilly's ears lowered.
"Aww, I was hoping to see her. She really doesn't want to do something on graduation?" she asked.
"Her graduation was actually last week," Shaky replied.
"I guess you already celebrated with her then?" Humphrey asked with a slick smile. Shaky laughed nervously.
"Come on. Five people, the wait is probably gonna be forever" I explained as I began walking to the front. The others followed me and I shivered as a cold wind blew. It felt like a winter night which was odd but it didn't matter. I felt a warm arm around me and an even warmer body against mine as Rick pulled me in to warm me up. We continued to walk as I leaned on him but finally let go once inside. To our surprise there was no wait and we were seated immediately. From left to right in the booth was Shaky, Lilly, Humphrey, me and then Rick. We were given menus and bread but pretty much everyone knew what they wanted. Everyone except Shaky of course.
"You're having trouble again aren't you?" Humphrey asked.
"I can't pick between these two" Shaky said as he pointed between two items. Lilly leaned over to look at what he was pointing at and then pointed herself.
"That one," she said.
"Just get both honestly. Tonight is a night of celebration" Rick suggested. Shaky chuckled and then closed the menu.
"Not a bad idea man" he said. Just then our waiter came over to take our drink orders. We gave him our orders and he left as quickly as he came.
"So no wait huh? How lucky are we?" Humphrey asked.
"It'll get busy, just you wait" Lilly smiled. Just then I felt something poke my leg from my right. Two taps and I turned and looked down to see Humphrey handing me a crumpled piece of paper. My heart skipped a beat as I took it quickly and stuffed it in my pocket. What did he want?"
"Hey Rick, can I scoot by for a second? I gotta use the bathroom" I said.
"Oh, yeah" he said as he scrambled to stand up. I giggled and then scooted out. "In case the waiter comes back, do you want me to get the usual?" he asked. I gave him a quick peck on the lips.
"You know it" I smiled before walking off. I walked over to the bathroom and stepped inside. Walking over to the sink I reached into my pocket and then pulled out the small note, unwrapping it. "Meet outside after ordering?" the note read. Why did he want to meet outside? It couldn't have been a good reason if he needed to ask like this.
I stepped out, walking back over to the area where our booth was. I didn't want to grab the attention of everyone but luckily Humphrey looked over at me just in time. I nudged over to the front door with my hands in my pockets and then began walking. I saw him say something to Lilly and then began to slide out of the booth where Rick sat, again making him get up. I walked back outside, getting hit with the freezing cold again and waited. It wasn't long though before Humphrey stepped out as well.
"Hey Kate" he greeted. I stared at him for a moment awkwardly.
"What is it Humphrey?" I asked.
"Um… come here for a second" he said before walking over to the bench that sat in front of the building. I walked over and took a seat next to him, waiting for him to talk. "So… I don't know how much longer you plan on waiting to tell him about what happened but I think we've put it off long enough" he started, making my heart sink again.
"What do you mean?" I asked nervously. He looked over at me slightly for a moment.
"Kate… it's time, we have to tell him" Humphrey said. I hesitated before shaking my head.
"No… no, we just graduated, he's finally feeling better-"
"That's exactly it, he's feeling better. He;s been out of the hospital almost three weeks. It's time Kate, no more putting it off. He has to know, he deserves to know" Humphrey said sternly before looking at me head on. My ears lowered as my heart sank even more. Suddenly Humphrey's eyes widened before he tilted his head. "You… you weren't gonna tell him… were you?" he asked. I felt hot suddenly, like I was about to pass out.
"He… he's just so happy, and everything is going well for the first time in months. Why would I ruin that? It's not like we actually did anything togeth-"
"Kate, stop!... just stop" Humphrey said, cutting me off. "He needs to know," he added. I said nothing and shut my mouth, unsure of what to say next. "Why are you so scared to tell him?" he asked.
"I don't want him thinking that I'm a whore or… to leave me… and more than anything… I don't want to break his heart, I don't want to hurt him" I answered as I myself felt heartbroken at the thought.
"Kate, Rick would never leave you. I don't know how many times any of us can tell you that he loves you with everything he has. And now you are everything he has. I've never seen anybody so in love… ever. He'll understand. We'll talk to him, and everything will turn out alright, I promise" Humphrey explained. Again I stared at him silently, trying to compile my thoughts. I didn't want to break his heart.
"You mean you're still gonna tell him with me?" I asked. Humphrey smiled.
"Of course. I told you I would wouldn't I? I never break a promise" he replied. I smiled back at him, again feeling a little bit better. What was wrong with me? It was like no matter how much people reminded me of the same thing, I always forgot with so much as the tiniest amount of time that would pass. Rick loved me, and nothing would change that. Although there was still part of me that knew he would be crushed by it, even if nothing actually happened. I was still his.
"No, you don't" I said when suddenly the door to the restaurant opened and Rick stepped out, walking to his left and around the corner. Humphrey and I watched as he walked, confused.
"You two seem like your old selves but… I don't know tense. Have you had sex at all?" Humphrey asked, turning my attention back to him. I shook my head.
"No, not since before everything. It's been a while" I said, and that it had been. Almost four months with someone I loved dear and not a single ounce of love. I could tell we still craved each other but it was if we felt awkward asking.
"Well you better get on that. I think you two could really use it" Humphrey commented. I turned back to where Rick walked.
"Yeah but… there's more important things to do" I said. Suddenly the door opened again, just before a family got to it. This time however it was Lilly that stepped out, following Rick where he went. Again the two of us watched in confusion.
"What the hell?" Humphrey said.
"Should I check on them?" I asked, turning to him again. I wasn't even sure they saw us, they turned the corner so fast.
"I'll text Lilly real fast" Humphrey replied as he pulled out his phone to message her. Cold wind blew again, making me shiver and cross my arms for warmth.
"It's supposed to be summer, what the hell" I complained.
"I thought you liked the cold," Humphrey replied as he continued to message my sister.
"I do, but I like warmth too… eh, I like the cold more" I said, making Humphrey chuckle.
"So what do ya say? Tell him tomorrow?" he asked. Again I turned to him, thinking about it all. Did I really want to tell him so soon? "Kate… it'll be okay" Humphrey reminded. I guess he saw worry in my eyes.
"Sure… tomorrow" I said, finally accepting defeat. Humphrey smiled just before his phone vibrated. "Everything alright?" I asked.
"Yeah, so she says," Humphrey replied. He stood up and then I did as well. Then out of nowhere Humphrey pulled me into a hug. I hugged him back but mostly because I felt like I had to. "Tomorrow we'll meet up and tell him together. And you'll see it'll all be alright" he reminded.
"I hope you're right," I said flatly. Humphrey broke the hug and then we looked each other in the eyes. Humphrey gave me one more smile and then let go before walking back to the restaurant. I took one more look at the corner the two walked around, thinking again if I should go over there or not when I heard Humphrey call me.
"Kate," he said. I turned to him and saw him holding the door. Quickly I walked over, accepting his gesture, and going back inside.
