Chapter 2: Who is Our Father?

As I promised, I'll be posting weekly if I can. I hope you guys like this, I haven't seen any comments yet, so please do! I enjoy reading your comments!

"But who is our father?" Joe asked as we walked to the local market.

"Well, I don't know," I brought out the letter from my pocket again and unfolded it. "The letter doesn't say anything about who our father is."

Joe grabs an apple and pays for it and takes a bite from it, "Well apparently, we're kings of Atlantis now, who was the original king of Atlantis?"

"I believe it was Poseidon, but he's been dead for years, we can't be getting this letter now," I told him.

"But when Poseidon died, weren't we like 5 or 6?" Joe pointed out.

"I guess and the letter said they've been looking for us for a while now," I glanced at the letter again.

"Where does it say where Atlantis is?" Joe glanced over my shoulder, taking a bite of his apple again.

"It doesn't say," I read it over again and flipped over the paper. On the back, it had a small print.

"What's that?" Joe pointed to the small print.

"Um," I looked closely at it and read it aloud, "To arrive at Atlantis, go where you remember coming into a mortal family."

"Mortal family? What does it mean by that?" Joe asked.

"Poseidon was a god, that means we're demi-gods," I tried to think where we were adopted, even though I didn't know I was adopted with Joe until I turned 16 and my parents announced we were adopted. We had been adopted after we were found by the seaside by our local ocean. But they didn't remember where.

"Why don't we try over there?" Joe pointed to a very polluted beach. The beach contained old seaweed, some trash including plastic bags, glass bottles, and paper.

"Um, I guess we could," We wandered down to the beach. Even though it was a sunny day, this beach was a gloomy place.

"I don't think this is the beach, Joe," I looked around, it doesn't feel right, it feels far too dark and gloomy. "Why don't we try the other beach a few miles away from here?"

"Alright," Joe followed me back to my house and we drove my car down to the beach I suggested. I parked in the parking lot nearby and we walked over to the beach. This beach was clean with almost sun-bleached sand. I breathed in the salty air, this place felt familiar.

"I think this is the place, Joe," I walked towards the lapping waves and closed my eyes.

I heard Joe's footsteps come up to me, "I think so too."

After a few moments, a bright white light shined around Joe and me. I felt like I was floating and I couldn't see anything around me. I felt lightheaded shortly after and I blacked out.

I woke up with a start, where am I? I looked around and my room doesn't look like a hospital or my own bedroom. Without knowing, I tried to get out of bed and I seemed to float to the floor as I got out of bed. I was underwater, how am I breathing? How did I get here?

"Joe?" I called out of my room when I reached the doorway.

"Cody?" I heard Joe's voice echo from down the hall.

I left my room. I thought I was going to move sluggishly but I moved with ease, it was like I was meant to be in the water after all these years. I swam down the hall calling out Joe's name.

"Cody?" Joe's voice sounded closer.

"Stay put, I'm coming!" I called out.

I swam all the way down the hall and turned left, "Joe?"

"Over here!" Joe was waving from a doorway a few feet away. I swam over to him.

"Do you know where we are?" I asked him.

"No, but could it be Atlantis, why else would we be underwater?" Joe pointed out.

"You're right," I looked around. There was coral against the walls and some seagrass poking out of the floor every so often. The marble flooring was covered in light algae and the walls are pearl white.

"So what now?" Joe wondered.

"I don't know, but how are we breathing?" That was my biggest question, how? How were we not drowning?

Before Joe could respond, there were swimming sounds coming from the hallway in front of us. Who could be in this area?

"Do you hear that too?" Joe asked.

"Yeah," I replied, hoping whoever is coming isn't someone who would murder us.

A shadow was against the wall, getting larger and larger as it got closer to us. I wanted to run, but maybe this person could help us. I didn't want to lose someone who could help us in this place. We didn't know what to do here or where to go.

A blonde mermaid girl with blue eyes came up to Joe and me, "Hello, I'm Selena, are you guys Joe and Cody?"

"Um," Joe looked at me and I nodded. "Yeah, why?"

"Come with me, quick!" Selena waved at us and swam off.

"Wait!" I swam after her with Joe following behind.

"Hurry!" Selena swam around a corner. Why are mermaids so quick?

"Why did you ask us who we were?" Joe demanded as he swam after her with me.

"Come on! You two are supposed to be Kings of Atlantis, why are you so slow?" Selena asked.

"Why did you ask us who we were?" I repeated Joe's demand.

We followed Selena around for what seemed like forever until we reached a room that was huge and open. In the middle of the room was a hole with marble pillars surrounding the hole. Inside the hole was a floating object that was held down with chains.

"What's that?" Joe asked.

"Oh, that's the Nexus," Selena finally answered one of our questions.

"What does the Nexus do?" I asked.

"It gives us the ability to breathe underwater and protects us from enemies," Selena explained.

"Enemies?" I gulped. "What enemies?"

"Well, we have sea monsters, but they barely come around ever since the Nexus came into Poseidon's possession," Selena explained. "Then we have werewolves, but they don't come underwater, they stay on the surface on the island nearby. We also have elves who haven't shown up for hundreds of years but that doesn't mean they're not out there. There are also ones who can do magic, we're sort of neutral with them, but still, I don't trust them."

"Werewolves? Elves?" Joe seemed to question Selena's knowledge. "I thought they were in fairytales."

"I bet you thought Atlantis was just a myth," Selena swam up to a huge throne. "Well, I'll leave you two here, some other mermaids or people will come around and help you out." Selena left us by the throne and the room was really quiet except for the slight bubbling sound from the Nexus bobbing.

"So, do you think we'll turn into mermaids?" Joe asked.

"Honestly, I don't know," I focused on the Nexus. The power felt familiar, almost comforting. It's almost like I've been here before, like I lived here, stood in this exact spot.

After what seemed like hours, someone finally came into the throne room. He was tall, a bit on the heavy side, had black hair, and wore goggles and a lab coat, "Hello, I'm Professor Pikalus."
