'Shepard-Commander, how are you feeling?'
'Weird. Wow.' Where was she? 'Legion?'
'This is the true Geth. This is us.'
It was VR, but also a virtual city.
'It's beautiful.'
'Shepard-Commander, please proceed to your mission.'
'Sure Legion.' Shepard was holding a virtual gun, it was her way to wipe out the Reaper virus.
Phew. This was hard work. She was deep asleep, but was exhausted from the hard work.
'How long was I out?' It felt like hours.
'Thirty minutes on the surface world, Shepard-Commander.'
'That's it?' So much to do. She picked up her gun.
'There! That's the last one. Legion! I'm ready to go! Legion?' Shepard was confused when the "room" changed. 'Where am I?' It looked like Rannoch, but there was quarians and geth walking around, none fighting among one another. 'Is this another memory? It's beautiful.' The geth were working, but the quarians weren't shooting at them, some were walking side by side talking to one another.
'This was the last time we were at peace.' Legion appears by Shepard. 'Our creators, we remember how things used to be.'
Shepard looked at Legion. He was looking down.
'You miss this.'
'Yes. None of us wanted to fight.' Legion looks at the scenery. 'See that man?' He points to a tall quarian. 'He was the one that made this unit. He was the one that taught us how to think.'
'Do we have a soul.' The question that frightened the quarians.
Legion nodded.
'That was the last time we ever saw him. He died protecting this unit.' Legion sounded sad.
'I'm sorry. He must have meant so much to you.' The Geth, they are more intelligent than she thought.
'When our creators ran, they left his body to rot. We made sure he got a proper burial.' The scene changed to a grave with a small mound of stones. 'He always believed in a higher power, that his Creator was watching. He prayed every night.'
'I didn't know the quarians believed in organized religion.' This was new to Shepard. Tali would love to hear this.
'Not anymore.' Legion looked up. 'But that wasn't the only thing. He talked about love.'
'Love?' Shepard was confused.
'We asked what that was. We saw families, couples, friendship. It was so foreign to us. Our creators weren't happy even we started asking questions. They couldn't give a straight answer '
'Because love is complicated.' Shepard only been in love a few times in her life. Her high school sweetheart, then Kaidan, Thane, then when he died, she went back to Kaidan.
'The answer doesn't answer our question.' Legion sounded frustrated.
'It's, hard to explain. Love can come in many forms. But the best way to describe it, it can make you very happy, or very sad.'
'What do you mean Shepard-Commander?'
'How would I explain this. I'll give you a example. Your creator, he obviously cared deeply about you. He sacrificed himself so you can live. Like how a parent loves their child.'
'Love means making someone happy, even if it means sacrifice.'
'Yes. But, love can also mean longing. You have feelings for this person, and want them to be happy. See that couple?' Shepard points to a quarian couple who were holding hands. 'They're happy to be with one another. They enjoy each other's company.'
'Like Romeo and Juliet.'
'You know Shakespeare?' Legion surprised her everyday.
'Your friend Miranda read that book often. The two lovers, they sacrificed for one another.'
'They did, but I wouldn't use them as an example.' Shepard didn't mind Shakespeare, but she never cared for that story. 'Sometimes, it can hurt. Love, it is something we all feel.'
'Even us?'
'You're doing this, for your people. That's love.'
'Family. Friendship.'
'Yes. You understand?'
'Yes, Shepard-Commander.'
'That's good. Are you done?'
'Not yet. We just have one more question.'
'Shoot.'
'This unit has no gun.'
Shepard chuckled.
'Sorry. I mean, ask away.'
'Passion, is that love?'
'EXCUSE ME?' Shepard stared at Legion.
'Organics, they engage in physical love. What's that like.'
Shepard wanted to facepalm. Now she knew what her mom felt like.
'Physical love, isn't always about love. Sex, ahem.' Shepard was embarrassed. 'Emotions don't always play a factor in it. Reproducing, having a good time with another person.'
'Do you have to be in love?'
'Not always. Sometimes you won't remember their name.' Shepard blushed thinking about her early days in the Alliance. 'Sometimes, it's nice to be with someone, physically.'
'Like EDI and Joker.'
'Probably.' Shepard never wanted to see that. 'It depends on the person.'
'Thank you.'
'No problem. Ready to leave?'
'Just one more question.'
'Sho...I mean ask.'
'Can I have a physical hug?' Legion almost sounded embarrassed.
'Sure.' Shepard hugs him. 'You are a true friend Legion.'
'As are you, Shepard-Commander. I love you.'
'I love you too.' They hug for a full minute.
'It's time to wake up.'
Shepard and Tali look at the ground in sadness. They thank the geth for digging the grave.
"I don't know the quarian prayer." There were scrolls, ancient ones containing the old quarian prayers, but the religion itself was long forgotten. "Maybe, you can say Earth's prayers?" Tali suggested.
"There are so many, I wouldn't know what to use." Shepard wasn't a atheist, but she did have a open mind. She looked up at the Rannoch sunset. "What if we say our own prayer." Shepard clicked on her omni-tool. "Joker, bring the squad down here."
A few quarians and geth came to watch, both sides were curious about the aliens holding a funeral.
"Thanks for coming everyone." Shepard and her crew were on Rannoch to say goodbye to Legion. Most of the crew were here, except for James, Kaidan and Steve. EDI was holding a live extranet stream for those that couldn't make it. Like Miranda, Jacob, Grunt, Jack, Samara, Kasumi, Thane (who sadly passed away) and Zaeed. "I know it is last minute, but I think it is important that we gather here." Shepard opens a prayer book. "Tali and I couldn't decide on what prayer to use, so we are going to borrow some lines from Thane's prayer book. She clears her throat. "Tali."
"Ancestors, we ask forgiveness. Take this one and guide him to the distant shores, and let us learn, that organic and synthetics can live together in peaceful harmony."
"Keelah sa'lai." Everyone says. They all bow their heads in prayer. Even the audience watching.
"Rest in peace Legion." Shepard puts a copy of her Alliance tags on the grave. "May we meet again on the other side."
