The sun was going down at La Push Beach on the Quileute Reservation. As Jacob sat comfortably on the course sand, leaning against a dried log, he reflected on how weird his friends were. He loved Quill and Embry dearly, though he would never say that aloud because they made enough fun of him already.
"Never kissed a girl have you, eh Black?" Said Quill, being his usual teasing self.
"Come on man." Said Embry, "We already knew that, give the guy a break."
"Yeah, give the poor virgin a break you reckon? If the girls around here gave him a break he wouldn't still be one." Voiced Quill.
"Going to sleep with your cousin after you take her to the prom eh, Quill?" Joked Jake.
Jacob quickly dodged an open can of beer being launched at him by Quill. It splashed against the log and fell into the dry sand.
"Better luck next time." Jacob said as Embry laughed and Quill tried to hide his embarrassment.
The boys were burning driftwood as the sun slowly lowered beneath the tall green forest behind them. Burning driftwood created blue flames that licked the driftwood, like pale icy fingers, consuming as they touched.
The warm late summer breeze was gentle as it ruffled their long hair over their bare shoulders. Jacob loved to be shirtless, long haired and wild. It suited his nature. He was connected to this place and these people who were like family to him. His tribe. Without them he would be nothing, average and purposeless.
He once hated his inner wolf, cursing it for being too strong for him to handle.
These days had been better, when the vampires kept their distance, and the people of Forks didn't need protecting because they were perfectly safe.
He finished his second can of beer and grabbed another. Slightly warm, but better than nothing.
"So who can we set Jacob up with, Embry?" Quill Questioned.
"Well, hes had plenty of admirers. I have a feeling if Jacob wanted to kiss a girl, he would have already."
"What's that supposed to mean?" Replied Quill.
Embry and Jake exchanged a quick furtive glance, both averting their eyes as soon as they met.
Quill didn't notice the slight change in the atmosphere.
Jake was always surprised at how perceptive Embry was.
Embry knew why Jacob hadn't made out with or had sex with any girls, though Jake had never told anyone.
Embry just knew.
Its not something he wanted his dad to find out. Not that he was ashamed. Billy was very old fashioned,
having a gay son would be an uncomfortable thing for him.
Jake enjoyed keeping his private desires secret. He explored them, late at night in his moonlit bedroom, alone.
It wasn't something he was ready to reveal yet. Keeping his sexuality a secret was easier.
Jake wondered what Quill and Embry fantasised about. Most likely large breasted women, maybe fake blonde hair and gaudy fake nails. Maybe that isn't very accurate, or maybe not for Embry anyway.
The sun had fully set now, though the air was still too balmy for comfort. The fire blazed strongly, pale blue, sending sparks flying upward into the sky where they fizzled into nothing.
"It's good to have you in the loop now, Embry. Being a wolf is great, eh? After you get past all the hard stuff at the start of the change." Quill stated.
"Yeah it's alright." Embry said, barely louder than a whisper.
Quill and Jacob knew why Embry was upset. It wasn't about being a wolf, it was what that meant.
The werewolf gene was only passed down genetically within the Quileute tribe, not any other tribe. It wasn't known who Embry's father was. Embry's mother was from the Makah tribe, so Embry had to have received the wolf gene from his father, which could only be one of three people; Billy Black (Jacob's father), Quill Ateara IV (Quill's father) or Joshua Uley (Sam's father, (Sam is the pack's Alpha)). This meant that he had a brother in his tribe, and he would never know who it is. Either Quill or Jacob could be his brother sitting right next to him and he didn't know. He may never know.
The whole tribe was shocked when he changed. Many questions of infidelity were raised.
There were secrets in this tribe, more than Jake would ever know.
The boys finished the last of the beer and began the run home. They needed to get to bed early and maintain their energy.
The Cullen's were arriving back in Forks tomorrow.
The whole tribe was on edge. Even though the Cullen's never hurt anyone, it didn't mean they weren't dangerous. We had to be ready.
Vampire free Forks was nice while it lasted, but summer was coming to an end and the bloodsuckers were coming home.
