Fireside Affair - Chapter 2

\/\/\/

The morning drive to the reservation school was pleasant. Jacob's 1986 Volkswagen Rabbit seemed to be holding up well. Maybe his mechanic skills were better than he thought. The radio was playing old school hits; Queen, The Beatles, Pink Floyd and surprisingly ABBA. Embry's favourites, though Quill would prefer no music at all.
Jake didn't have a preference.

The day was warm again.

Jake could feel the heat in the whipping air as he drove down the road, winding past endless trees on one side, and the grey ocean waves striking against the cliff on the other. He would miss the heat. Winter was just around the corner. Constant rain, here we come.

"Wonder if we'll see the Cullen's hunting tonight." Said Embry. It was the first comment he had made about their impending arrival.

Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody began to play on the stereo.

"Seeing them hunt is an experience. It's good to see their true selves, what we might be up against if they ever stop their 'vegetarian' diet." wondered Quill.
"Yeah, I'd rather not witness that again. Their blood-lust is disgusting." Stated Jake.

Embry hadn't hunted a vampire yet. Jake, Quill, Sam Uley and the others had hunted a female vampire that was moving through the area not long ago. She hadn't seen them coming, and barely had a chance to react as Sam's massive jaws wrapped around her body. Apart from her, they had killed one other who had hunted and killed in Port Angeles. He didn't see us coming either.

Their wolf gene was activated because the Cullen's kept coming in and out of town.

It was against our nature to allow them to live, if you could even call it 'living'.

We wouldn't be able to wipe out all of them anyway. Sam and I would be lucky to kill one, they outnumbered us and were far more skilled in combat than us.

The rest of the pack wouldn't stand a chance.

It was infuriating that they existed at all.

The school day was long and hot. The classroom air-conditions weren't up to the task. Jake's long hair stuck to his sweating neck. He looked forward to a cool shower before going to Chief Swan's house with his dad to drink beer, watch football and see Bella. Isabella Swan had come back to Fork's after a long absence. They had made mud pies together when they were little. It would be nice to see her grown up, she was such a nice kid with warm, Intelligent brown eyes.

"Maybe Bella is hot?" Thought Quill with a laugh. as they sauntered back to the Volkswagen rabbit.
"Maybe she is." Jake agreed.
"Well you better do something about it Black, or someone else will."
"I already know she's smart and pretty. I don't own her, so feel free to shoot your shot before Mike Newton does." Jake reckoned.
"Man, I hate that guy enough already." Pronounced Quill.

Quill hadn't forgiven Mike Newton for securing Jessica Stanley's affections. Quill and Jessica hadn't ever spoken, but he held a torch for her. She was mean and vain at times but Quill hated that Mike saw other girls behind her back. She deserved better than a cheater.

The three boys drove home. Quill thinking about Jessica, Embry about his unknown father and Jacob about the pack meeting tonight. They were going to survey the local area, make sure the Cullen's stayed off the reservation and that the townsfolk were safe.

"Hey Jacob." Isabella said. Going in for a quick hug.
"It's been way too long Bella, I was thinking you'd never come back... and call me Jake, all my friends do."
"Thanks, it's good to be back. I'm surprised it's not raining. I don't remember it ever being this warm." Stated Bella.
"Enjoy it while it lasts." said Jake

A gentle breeze ruffled Bella's long hair, It smelled like lavender and vanilla. Her perspiration made her smell even sweeter.
Not that Jake was attracted to her obvious beauty. Though Bella didn't seem to realise how pretty she was, somehow that made her more beautiful.

Jake and Bella were sitting on the porch of Charlie Swan's house, they had abandoned the football game, neither being a huge fan.

Jake was itching to break out of his skin and run. He would get the chance later tonight, after dark when the pack met.

"It's too bad you attend the reservation school, it would've been nice to know one person." Shared Bella. Who was nervous about her first day of school in Forks.
"Don't worry, most people in Fork's are alright. The seniors light fires on First Beach every now and again, we join them. Most of them are easy to get along with."
"Yeah, it'll be fine." Said Bella, wanting to be strong even though she dreaded going to Fork's High School.

Jake wished he could make her feel better.

Jacob lifted his shirt off and piffed it onto his bed, stretching his arms high and wide. The burly muscles in his body still felt like new acquisitions. Some areas bulged where he didn't know muscles had existed previously. Perks of the wolf gene.

He tossed his shoes off and unzipped his jeans, lowering them past his tight 'v' and down to his ankles. He wasn't uncomfortable being naked in front of the others, though he was shy about seeing their naked bodies. Somehow, seeing Quill and Embry's faces attached to fit naked bodies didn't seem right. He averted his eyes when that happened. He didn't want to think too much about their bodies, because all of the wolves were so... muscular and bulging.

Jake Jumped out his window, naked. He started running, and then sprinting towards the trees where the sun was setting. Billy was most likely watching from the kitchen window. Jake once felt like a crazy man running naked, but now he just embraced his unique nature and didn't care which members of the tribe saw his bare butt. He didn't have anything to be ashamed of. Not that he believed anyone in the pack appreciated the decent size of his junk or wilderness of his unkempt pubic hair. No one in the pack shaved. Since they were so often seeing each other naked, it was better to keep hidden whatever you could. Better to maintain some secrets.

Jake sprinted as hard as he could, feeling his muscles heat up and stretch further and faster. He jumped through the air, phasing mid-jump. His skin felt released and tingly. His whole body felt spectacular, like taking a massive stretch after being cramped up for a long time. He shouldn't have waited so long in between shifts, his body needed this, vampires or not. His massive paws hit the ground with a thud.

He kept sprinting, the shift barely slowed him down. He darted through the trees, brown and green blurs that disappeared behind him, running faster than any car. He estimated 250 km/hr was his current speed, though it was hard to estimate.

He flew over a ditch, stretching his four legs as far as they were able, and proceeded towards their usual meeting place, which was a round gap in between some of the largest and oldest oak trees on the reservation.

He couldn't her any of the packs thoughts, which was unusual. Hearing their spirits was interesting, sometimes he only got small snippets of things here and there, sometimes missing important thoughts and hearing random incoherent jumbles of ideas and feelings. When they were hunting a vampire, he could hear every thought and feel every feeling of his pack. They all existed as one in the hunt. It was euphoric.

The meeting place was deserted. Jake was usually the last to arrive.

It was nice being inside the forest. He felt connected to these old oaks, who's roots dove deep through the soil, twisting and intertwining with each other. Strong and immovable. Roots that were here long before Jacob was alive, and would exist long after he was dead, even if his inner wolf allowed him to live a long existence. These trees were old even when Ephraim Black was the alpha. Perhaps forming roots while Taha Aki was alive.

Jake paced around the trees, feeling the silence. He could hear the faint breeze and see the leaves gently fall. The pack was not here.

Jake started running towards the headland, out near the cliffs to where the reservation reached its border. The cliffs were dramatic and beautiful, with multiple headlands stretching into the sea, there was a place where Jake and Quill had sometimes jumped into the sea, a 30 metre drop of jagged cliff and deep dark water where waves thrashed against the cliff face. He would never survive it if he were still human.

Jake reached the tip of the headland, breathing the cold salty air, feeling it rustle through his flowing fur. There was nowhere else in the world as beautiful as where he lived. Grey rock was hard under his feet as he stared into the blue horizon. It was easy to see where the pale blue sky met the dark grey sea.

The direction of the wind changed and Jake's whole body stiffened ready for action.

The scent in the air was strong. It reeked of vampire. Filling Jake's nostrils, he sense the direction of the strong smell. He glanced towards the other headland to his right. It was lower, wider, and rockier.

The source of the stench was easy to spot.

A Cullen.

He looked as if carved out of marble by one of the old masters.

Glistening auburn hair, angular cheek and jaw bones. Incomprehensible beauty.

perfectly sculpted.

He seemed to be watching me. I hated that he spotted me before I spotted him.

Those Cullen's always seemed to be a step ahead. They were old and their senses were keen. Their roots in this world were as deep as the ancient oak's.

He stayed seated on a jagged rock that faced the sea, a book in hand. He did not move. His hand blocked the cover so I couldn't make out what he was reading.

Our eyes met.

His honey golden eyes hit me like a punch in the chest. A mental brick wall smashed down. It was physically painful.

My senses failed and I was struck dumb.

I started into his eyes for what felt like eternity.

Pure, soft, liquid gold. The most valuable and intelligent eyes I had ever seen.

I had visions.

I saw this man standing by a window, looking out into the sunlight, unable to go outside. I walked up behind him, gently placing my arms around his shoulders and allowing his head to rest on me, smiling while I held him close.

I saw this man lying in a bed, smiling at me, the stark white sheets were identical to the colour of his naked skin. he laughed, hitting me with a pillow.

I saw this man walking with me in La Push, on First Beach in the Quileute Reservation. We held hands while we walked. My tribe was walking ahead of us. He leaned in and kissed me gently.

I crashed back to earth. Hearing the ocean roar louder than ever.

The man on the other headland stood up slowly while staring at me.

This was Edward Cullen.

One of the older ones.

I had just imprinted on him.

He was the most beautiful creature I had ever seen.

I would protect him with my life.

He was the new centre of the universe. A gravitational pull that couldn't be ignored.

This was the most beautiful feeling that Jake had ever felt in his life. The intensity brought him to tears.

He was a vampire.

Jacob Black, the son of Billy Black, descendent of Ephraim Black, and the intended Alpha of the pack had imprinted on a vampire. A male vampire.
Jacob couldn't stop looking at Edward. He was stone. Unmoving. Just looking at him, head slightly tilted against the strong wind.

Jake turned around and took off running.

He sprinted faster than he had ever sprinted before. He sensed his pack and kept sprinting. He heard Sam's voice reaching out to him saying 'Jake were here,' but Jake barely noticed.

He ran faster than he ever had before. The wind stung his eyes.

300 km/hr... 350 km/hr ..

He bashed past the forest, into the clearing that was his home. Still seeing liquid gold in his mind he phased to walk on his human legs.

He threw the front door open, pacing past Billy in his wheelchair.

Jake felt that his mind was on another planet, and he didn't know how to properly come home.

"Jake... What are you...?" Billy began, seeing his son's distress.

Jake slammed his bedroom door. He started pacing.

He didn't calm down until sunrise, where he fell into an uneasy sleep. Like a fever dream, he saw vivid images of white stone, golden eyes, marble statues everywhere. All of them were Edward.

Edwards eyes were the sun, and Jake knew his whole world orbited around those eyes now.
