Chapter 4 - Time Has Passed
College was more fun than high school, however getting a job not so much. Piper and her best friend planned opening their own business, to do so, she needed to find a separate job to increase the income. Bartending did not sound that bad, as she was variable, she hoped flirting with both men and women would bring her extra tips, plus she could work night shifts.
There were only a few people in the bar she had entered. Her main focus was the bartender so even when someone vaguely familiar called her names, she did not pay much attention to them and sat at the bar trying to convince the barman to give her a job. Unfortunately he could serve her only with a margarita
"It's a little cold out for a margarita, don't you think?" a newcomer commented. Piper looked up; her heart started hammering against her ribcage. After all these years and she still found Alex intimidating, especially with the new tattoos and gothic style. "Let's see this," the brunette took the resume. "Steve's Greek Cuisine? Le Grand Fromage?" she chuckled doubtfully. "Bullshit, bullshit. You need a lesson in fudging a resume."
Like really? "Do you work here?"
"Are you fucking kidding me?" She asked frowning and returned back to the piece of paper. "Manager Polly Harper." She looked back at the blonde. "No one named Polly Harper gets put in charge. Who is that really?"
"She's my friend," Piper said innocently and the taller woman laughed.
"You've never waited a fucking table in your life, have you?"
Damn she was good at reading people, was it the sixth sense she had? The younger of them only shook her head. "No," she admitted quietly. She felt this undeniable pull towards Alex again, maybe even stronger than before. She looked away at the people around them.
"So, Piper Chapman. A Smith grad with excellent listening skills, passionate about making diners feel good. Hmm, that sounds kind of dirty …" She told the bar tender to put the drink on her tab and looked back at the resume. "Safe, clean, and careful when handling food and drink."
The hopefully-soon-to-be-employee yanked out the paper from the brunette's hands. "Oh gosh," she whispered, scratching her forehead embarrassed.
"I liked that in a woman," the gothic fan smiled and the blonde looked up at her. "What else do I need to know about you?" she asked. It was a long time since they saw each other and not in Alex's finest moment.
"Who are you?" asked Piper. Who was she thinking she was? An arrogant ass who owned the world? Sexy but still arrogant.
"My name is Alex, and my deepest darkest secret is that I am a partial wolf, but you know that."
"Well, yeah, I mean, what do you do, Alex? Besides making fun of strangers in bars."
"You are no stranger. And I work for an international drug cartel." The blonde was stunned for a moment, her smile froze. The older of the pair started laughing.
"I never know if you are making fun of me or if you are serious," pouted the blonde sipping her drink.
"Well, Little not-so-Red-today Riding Hood, if you are not scared of the big bad wolf, let's catch up," she pointed at a booth for two people. "Are you?" she asked concerned.
The shorter woman shook her head calmly. "No, not really. You freaked the crap out of me but never tried to eat me."
Alex tilted her head and raised her eyebrow. "I dare say I did."
The blonde blushed. "Not like that."
"Listen," the older of them shuffled, pushed her glasses up and looked into the always curious blue eyes. "I know I sent like tons of emails, but I still want to apologise in person. It's painful when bones start growing and remodelling in time of twenty minutes instead of twenty years, also the muscles shortening and stretching is no fun and I don't like being seen hurt. I am sorry you had to witness the transformation first hand."
"Why hadn't you said anything before?"
"Because it sounded insane and I did not want you to consider me a lunatic. I wanted you to like me."
No matter what, no matter the time which had passed, if one year, two years, even four years, Piper was always drawn to this intimidating person. Now she knew it was undeniable attraction she felt towards the wolf human since she was fifteen years old, since the moment they briefly kissed for the first time. The two women were like magnets, inevitable to keep meeting again. She did not know what the future held, however she was sure Alex would be part of it as long as they walked the Earth.
The End
