Violet's Story
Another fic I wrote for Fluffbruary. At the request of my awesome friend J-Farraday, I wrote the story of Violet, the Integrity soul from my fic Hopes, Dreams, And DETERMINATION and how she fell into the Underground and met Toriel. I hope you guys enjoy!
...
Eleven year old Violet woke up at the bottom of a massive hole, staring up at the sunlight far above her as she lay in a bed of golden flowers. She groaned and tried to get up, but a jolt of excruciating pain radiating from her right leg prevented it and she crumpled to the ground. Sweat soaked her long blond hair, which stuck to her face, freed from its normal bun in the fall, and tears filled her eyes as she let out an agonized cry. Unable to move without pain, her mind wandered to how she had gotten into this mess.
How could she have been so stupid?!
She had decided to go wandering in the woods by herself during a trip with her ballet class and gotten butt lost. Then she had brilliantly decided the very best way to get un-lost was to make her way to and climb a "cursed" mountain so she could see where she was going from the top.
And because of her stupid decisions, she had fallen down a giant hole and now her leg was probably broken and she couldn't see any water nearby, and if she couldn't walk, couldn't find water, couldn't get out of here, she'd… she'd…
"H-Help!" she cried, praying for someone, anyone to come to save her. But would they? She hadn't told anyone where she was going, and how would anyone even be able to find her in such a deep hole? What if no one came?
But someone did.
"Oh my," a woman's voice, soft and motherly, gasped and footsteps came running towards her. Violet sighed in relief and turned as best she could despite the pain to see and thank her savior.
But her breath caught in her throat as she saw that the woman who had come to save her was no human, but a white furred monster with the face of a goat, floppy ears, a small set of goat horns, and crimson red eyes who was wearing a long purple dress with a weird symbol on the chest and white sleeves. Terrified she'd be killed or eaten, Violet tried to scramble back, only to cry out as her leg violently protested her attempt to move it. "P-Please d-don't hurt me!" she pleaded, trying to curl up as best she could to protect herself.
"Oh my child, I would never hurt you, I promise. I am here to help," the woman said kindly, kneeling down next to her. "I am Toriel, caretaker of the Ruins. What is your name?"
Violet shakily looked into Toriel's eyes, fearing she was being deceived, but saw nothing but kindness there. She relaxed a little and tried to smile. "My name's Violet. Violet Park."
Toriel smiled. "While I wish it had been under much better circumstances, it is very nice to meet you, Violet. May I take a look at your leg?"
Violet thought about this. While she was still nervous, she knew if Toriel wanted to hurt her, she probably would have already. And it wasn't like she could do anything with a broken leg. So after a moment of hesitation, she nodded.
…
"So… I'll need to stay here for a while?" Violet asked softly. Toriel had splinted and wrapped her leg, and brought her to her home where she tucked her into a bed in what must have been a guest room. The goat woman had fussed over her just like her own mom would have and used healing magic on her, as well as giving her an ice pack. It eased most of the pain, but her leg had been pretty badly broken in the fall.
Toriel nodded. "I am afraid broken bones are a rather complex thing to heal, even with magic. While healing magic accelerates the process, the bones still need time to knit, though significantly less than without magic. You should be fully healed in a week or two."
"My mom and sister are going to be so worried… Why'd I have to be so dumb?" Violet groaned.
"Violet, do not call yourself such names. It was merely an accident." Toriel scolded her gently. She then ruffled her hair. "And you have nothing to fear. I promise I will take good care of you here."
"I'm really sorry about this." Violet sighed.
"Do not worry about it. It is my pleasure to help? Now do you need anything? Are you thirsty? Hungry?"
"A little." Violet admitted.
Toriel smiled. "I will get you something. Does a glass of milk sound all right? And how about a piece of butterscotch-cinnamon pie? It's my specialty."
Violet smiled. "That sounds amazing, thank you."
Toriel beamed and left the room, soon returning with a glass of milk, a TV tray, and a large piece of delicious looking pie. Violet thanked her again as Toriel set it up for her, and took a bite of the pie. Her eyes lit up as the sweet butterscotch and slight spiciness of the cinnamon practically exploded in her mouth in a burst of flavor. "This is the best pie I've ever had!" she exclaimed.
Toriel chuckled. "I'm so glad you like it, my dear."
"You'll have to meet my mom and exchange recipes. She loves cinnamon desserts too. She makes the world's best cinnamon rolls. You'll have to try them." Violet said with a smile.
Toriel smiled again, but it was sad this time. "That sounds wonderful." she said softly.
"What's wrong?" Violet asked worriedly.
"Oh, it is nothing to trouble yourself with now, dear. For now, let us focus on getting you better," Toriel told her, brushing off her concerns.
Violet frowned, but didn't push. When adults hid things they thought she was too young to understand, getting them to tell her was almost impossible until they were ready. She had learned this from when her mom and dad had gotten divorced. Plus, Toriel barely knew her. She might find out later, but she knew she wasn't going to now, so she'd let it go.
For now.
….
It had been four days since Violet fell, and Toriel had indeed taken care of her, doing fun activities, helping her exercise her healing leg, and holding her whenever Violet cried because of missing her mom and sister. Being with Toriel made it easier though, and she couldn't wait for Toriel and her mom to meet. They were so much alike, including their love of sewing/knitting.
"Now you just pull the needle through here, like this." Toriel instructed, showing Violet how to knit a scarf as she sat on the edge of her bed.
"Is this right?" Violet asked, casting on the purple yarn the way Toriel had showed her.
Toriel smiled. "Yes! You're doing perfectly, dear."
Violet beamed. "Thanks!"
They sat in comfortable quiet together, knitting their projects. Violet had never understood before how her mother could sit for hours doing this. Now she was starting to understand. It was truly relaxing, and it was nice spending time with Toriel. Toriel was really motherly and sweet and had done so much for her.
She'd miss her when she had to leave.
...
"You are doing great, Violet. You are walking so much more easily now. It looks like you are almost fully recovered." Toriel told Violet as they walked down the hallway almost a week later. Toriel was there to provide a steadying hand if Violet needed it, but so far she hadn't, and her leg felt as good as new. Violet was thrilled. She would be able to see her parents and her little sister again!
"I'm so glad." Violet sighed. "Now I'll be able to go home, right?" Toriel looked crestfallen and Violet spoke quickly, hoping she hadn't hurt her feelings. "I mean, it was really nice staying with you, Toriel, and I had a great time, but my family is going to be worried sick. They and the police are probably searching for me."
"I know, sweetheart, and I want you to be able to see your family again too, but..." Toriel looked down and sighed. "There's something I need to tell you."
...
"W-What?" Violet asked shakily a while later, sinking to her bed in despair. "There's a barrier that has everyone trapped? Including any humans that fall? And to break it, they'll-they'll want my soul?"
Toriel nodded sadly. "I am so sorry, Violet. I should have told you far sooner than this. I did not want to upset your recovery... but that is no excuse. You had the right to know. Before our son and daughter died, Asgore and I, along with our royal scientists, tried so hard to find another way, but there was none. And now... with Asriel having been killed by humans, something in Asgore, who was once the gentlest, kindest person I have ever known, snapped. He has become willing to kill to set everyone free. I have been trying to protect any humans that have fallen, but the little boy who fell before you left and I never heard anything back. I fear he was killed."
"Are you-Are you sure Asgore would kill me? Are you sure he killed that little boy? You said he was once kind, maybe I can talk him down!" Violet pleaded.
Toriel looked down. "I do not believe that's possible, child."
"But maybe it is! And I want to see my parents and sister again! I'm not giving up. There has to be a way, Toriel, and I'll find it. And I'll come back for you, and we'll all see the sun!" Violet promised.
Tears filled Toriel's eyes. "Violet, please, I cannot have you die out there too!"
"I won't. I promise I won't. I'll be careful. If someone tries to attack me, I'll get out quickly. And from the stories you told me, I know there are other kind monsters out there. I'll find a way. I know I will." Violet told her.
"Violet..."
"I have to do this. No, I'm going to do this. No matter what." Violet said, determined.
Toriel laughed sadly. "I-I know I cannot stop you. All right, my child, when you are ready, I will help you pack your things and show you the way out of the Ruins. Just promise me you will make it."
"I promise." Violet told her.
Little did she know, the promise would be a lie.
...
The next day, Violet stood at the exit to the Ruins, a bag on her shoulder of provisions Toriel had packed for her. She wore a lovely pink sweater Toriel had made just for her and her tutu just for luck. Toriel unfortunately hadn't had a set of shoes in her size, so she wore her ballet flats.
Toriel smiled sadly, placing her hand on the door. "Be safe, my child."
Violet smiled back to reassure her. "I will. And... I want you to have this." She pulled out the purple scarf she had made and handed it to Toriel. "I know it's not much, but... thank you so much for taking care of me. For being so nice. For being... like a second mom." she said softly.
Toriel choked back tears. She took the gift reverently like a priceless treasure, then knelt and hugged Violet tightly. Violet leaned into the hug, breathing in the smell of warm cinnamon that followed Toriel everywhere.
"Thank you so much, little one. I will treasure it always." Toriel whispered. "I love you."
Violet closed her eyes, holding back her own tears. "I love you too, Toriel. And this isn't goodbye. I'll be back before you know it."
Toriel nodded, shaking a bit, then slowly released her. "I-I believe you, my child. And remember, my home will always be open to you."
Violet smiled bravely. "I know." She gave Toriel another hug, then reluctantly pulled away. Toriel pushed open the door for her, and Violet headed out, turning to wave goodbye.
Toriel waved back, only closing the door when Violet was out of sight. She then collapsed to her knees, holding the scarf close with tears in her eyes, praying Violet was right.
Praying she wouldn't lose yet another child.
...
Unfortunately Toriel's fears were proven correct. After being attacked by a monster, Violet got lost in Snowdin Woods and froze to death. However, this story does come with a happy ending, as many years later, Violet's spirit was restored and she was given a new skeleton body, able to reunite with her mom and her sister as well as Toriel.
