She came rushing into the room to see him in the same position of course.
"Took you long enough" He said with a strained voice. He probably was tired of just standing in one spot. The discomfort in his body language was evident & she couldn't blame him at all.
"Sorry, I thought about screwing you over" She may have been "joking" but she knew that the statement was true. He gave her a look that showed he chose to believe it for the time being, but she could tell he had a very extremely strong feeling that she wasn't joking.
She picked up the cauldron off the floor. Giving him a nod to let him know she was ready.
Nick honestly was surprised she didn't do what they both knew she could. Which was just leave the house & wait for him to outrun this soon to be on attack blade. A question he'll ask on the road for sure.
She backed up by the doorway, ready to run with him as soon as he takes off.
"Okay on three" He said to her & she nodded affirmatively.
He counted. "One"
"Two" He counted once more. As soon as he was about to say three she blurted out. "Wait!" She closed her eyes as she spooked herself almost & he let out an aggravated breath, flashing a grimaced smile at her. "What?"
"Maybe I should open the door. You know to leave." Nick had a look on his face that looked like he was glad she came up with the idea.
"Do it"
She nodded & went. She walked past the mirror & felt a bubble of guilt in her insides. She swallowed it away though & continue to the door as she opened it. She decided to go on and put the bag & the cauldron in the car right now. That way she wouldn't be weighed down or risk dropping it. How embarrassing that would be.
It kind of bothered her the fact she didn't even think about just hopping in the car & leaving him. Then again her previous thoughts about a phone on whether or not she'll take it should leave her with a mind full of oddly, slightly guilt-filled thoughts.
She ran back into the house, meeting him in the room once again.
He looked at her as her face popped in. "Can we finally get the hell out of here now?" It wasn't an actual question, more like a statement of being completely done with this situation.
"Unless you would like to stay" She jested at him. He gave her a pointed look.
He counted "One...Two."
She swallowed the growing lump in her throat as he prepared to say three.
"Three" He said & almost immediately he quickly ducked down as he took a big step to the side. Much like they expected the blade instantly shot forward as he made his move. The attempted stabbing by it happen like a missile taking off, launching itself at the spot he previously occupied. It ended up stabbing into the wall but pulled itself out. Looking for blood.
Nick's blood.
They both ran now as it quickly followed behind them, they were shoulder to shoulder but Nick made sure she was mainly in front just in case it caught up to them, it hit him first. Not that it would hit her as a target since it just wants him, but he doesn't want it stabbing through her to get to him. Hard to believe he was thinking about the best way to protect her.
It almost got him as they turned around the corner of the hall that you have to walk down. Stabbing into the wall once again & made Nick pissed that this Hallway was so damn long. Well not long but you walk down from the room, you have to turn then you have to do it one more time to get back into the living room to the front door.
One-half of the hallway left to go now.
Nick swears he felt the slight breeze brush his ear from how fast the thing was going. Adalind moved well for someone who just had a baby he had to admit. He looked back for a second to see where it was. He then realized it wasn't there anymore. She must have too because she stopped running as they stopped in the hallway.
"Where did it go?" She asked, panting as she was trying to catch her breath to speak better. Nick didn't answer but held his finger up to tell her to be quiet for a moment. Expectedly she didn't like it but she did, she did roll her eyes slightly though.
Nick let his ears focus. He could hear the sound of steel cape through the air like wind & it was getting louder. But where was it coming from? He then realized it was coming from the front of the hallway.
Which would mean Adalind was right in the way of where it would stab first. Right on cue, as he realized he probably only had a second at the most if even that. He pulled her over by her right wrist so she was in front of him & the surprise of it sent her into the wall in front of him. She didn't have long to take notice of how intimately close this was or how pissed she was for being yank because she quickly saw why.
The blade came zipping in & unfortunately for Nick, his left hand got stabbed directly into the wall by it since he couldn't move it in time from pulling her out of the way.
"Holy Shit!" She exclaimed as a muffled pain grunt came from Nick. Gritting his teeth to not scream, he wouldn't even give a random blade the satisfaction of knowing it pained him. It didn't wait long to realize it hadn't ended his life so it took itself out of his hand & tried to stab through his head but he & Adalind moved their heads in unison to the left to dodge it.
They really needed to get out of each other's faces like this. Their lips almost kept brushing off of just ducking this damn thing.
It wouldn't be soon though as it attempted again & they dodge to the right. Both not realizing their hands were clasped together so they could move at the same time easier. Adalind could feel his blood on her and she couldn't help but have flashbacks to the last time she had his blood on her. It wouldn't work this time, but still brought up memories. Of course, she should focus on living right now. But thoughts came quick.
They let their left hands go but held on to each other's right as Nick used hers as leverage for him to spin further along the wall going towards the right and she leaned over to the left as the blade ended up stabbing through the wall right between them. They both looked over at it, seeing their faces reflections in it but each other's eyes over the top of it.
Nick took advantage of it this time. Ran forward with her in front again so once again she wouldn't get hit but they could see the end of the hallway so this was soon to be over then they could be life threat free after.
Well for the rest of this day.
They got to the living room now & it was still zooming to them. He knew it wouldn't stop it but he wanted just an extra second of distraction so he picked up one of the wooden chairs they passed by quickly & held it behind him & he heard it stab into the wood. He hurriedly threw the chair to the side as quick as he could in such a fast manner.
They reached the front door & Adalind almost tripped when she ran out of the house as Nick shut the door. His face was right in front of it as he heard the lock click & all of a sudden the blade stabbed through the door. It stopped moving but the tip was right in front of Nick's eye, maybe three centimeters from his pupil. So close Nick thought if he blinked he probably touch it with his lash.
He slowly backed his head away but still had both his hands on the door as he was leaning against it. He was already tired of enough before they came here & now this had probably taken the rest of the energy he had left it felt like. He has only gotten maybe four hours of sleep in the past four or five days even before all this & coming to Vienna.
His head was leaning down now as he took the moment for a breather, shutting his eyelids as well. He felt the airway being interrupted so that must mean Adalind is walking up behind him.
Adalind had to take a few breaths right now after all that. That was a little more intense than she thought it would be.
He saved her life though. Because it was sure about to be over a minute ago.
She saw the blood leaking down the door from where his left hand had itself planted with him leaning on it. Looking down at her hand which had his blood all over it from when he was holding it. It caused a feeling she never had for him. She is not quite sure what it is, or she doesn't want to admit what it is.
She saw his back moving like he was breathing a lot for obvious reason but it was steady & calm breaths so that run didn't tire him at all. Well not physically, she doesn't think he has slept much, to be honest, & he may be more mentally tired adding on to anything physical.
Now that, she understood.
He saved her though. She wasn't sure but she just had a feeling her eyes probably had a soft look in them right now staring at him. Then it was like her legs just took over for her. Walking up behind him.
She crouched so she could be on his level, putting her hands on both of his shoulders in a nurturing way. "You okay?' She asked sincerely. He looked like he was going to answer because she saw his mouth move & his head turned a little to the direction of her voice. But he stopped & she wondered why.
He slowly turned his eyes to focus on her hand on his shoulder.
She didn't even realize she did that, well it's like she knew. But she didn't at the same time. She mentally said "oh" as she awkwardly took her hands off of him. Clearing her throat & swearing at herself in her head very rudely.
He went back to looking down once again. "Let's go" He said simply. Standing up now & walking past her towards the car. She watched him for a moment & then looked down at her zipped-up jacket pocket. There goes that tiresome guilt feeling in her stomach again as she looks down at it.
"You can drive again" He called out to her as he got in the passenger's side of the car. Taking off his jacket & throwing it into the backseat as he ripped a sleeve of his deep navy blue shirt & wrapped it around his stabbed hand. She walked over now & got in to get ready to drive off & boy was she glad.
"Finally get the hell out of here" She heard him say as he stared out the window.
The drive had been relatively silent most of the way back. Nightfall was dawning upon them as they watch the pale, grey sky of Vienna fade away into darkness on the drive back to the hotel.
They were maybe seven minutes away.
She had trouble clearing her mind at the moment though. She was glad when he talked to her or even when they found themselves in that little situation at Frau Pech's house. It allowed her not much time to focus on her need of having Diana back. She could never let it slip her mind but at least the worry of it was distracted enough to make it bearable to think about when other things needed her attention as well.
But the silent drive was making her uneasy. She was feeling sad along with an unbelievable amount of anguish at the thought of never having her again. What if the last time she saw her, was the last time ever?
Could she even continue life thinking that? Not a chance. She either would have Diana or they were going to have to kill her to do so.
She felt her palms become sweaty & Nick took notice of how much harder she gripped the wheel. She didn't notice that he was watching her as her panic was becoming more evident in her.
He notice how she kept shifting uncomfortably in the seat with these constant small, quick deep breaths she was taking. Her face & eyes were staring at the road but he could tell her eyes were watching whatever turmoil was going on in her mind.
Her lips were pursed together & her jaw trembled sometimes.
He looked down at his hand which was still bleeding and he knows they were only a few minutes out. He then remembered earlier in the day, which felt like long ago now but he remembered something she said.
"Nick you got to fill me in on some of your plans or I'm going to go insane soon"
He remembered how she was getting all flustered & that it was right after she talked about Diana. She wanted to be distracted so she wouldn't laser focus on it too much & now she was beginning to act the same way again so he figured she must be thinking about Diana right now.
The drive they had been silent as well so it wasn't like there was much else to distract her from it.
He turned to look back at the window as they arrived back at the hotel parking lot now. Frustrated at himself for not only feeling for her once more but thinking of a way to help her find some peace for the night.
He mentally reasoned with himself though. It's not that you care for her or are bothered because she is distraught right now, it is just because you know she may act out or do something crazy if you don't calm her down. Not because you want to, to make her feel better in any way. That's what it had to be right?
The reasoning was good enough for him to shrug it off & let it go so he reached into the backseat where she places the cauldron along with the bag of the things she needed. Also grabbed his jacket & placing it over his shoulder. Putting the bag in the cauldron so he could carry it in his good hand as he hugged it to his side to hold it. It didn't hurt to use his stabbed hand, but he had a feeling getting blood on the thing that was about to be used for a very complex potion tomorrow wasn't a good idea.
Especially his blood.
She must have been zoned out still because she still hasn't spoken a word but got out of the car & didn't make a fuss over him grabbing the cauldron because of his bloody hand. He did however notice the blood on the stirring wheel & for a second he wondered if she was injured as well besides the small blood she had lost from her finger after opening the chest.
But then he remembered how they held hands when the cursed or bewitched blade was trying its best to stab his brain through his skull & didn't care if it went through her to do it.
They walked into the hotel now as she opened the door with her hand that wasn't covered in his blood while he sat down the cauldron onto the nightstand by the bed since the other nightstand on the other side had a lamp on it. He looked up to see she took off her jacket, throwing it on the floor by the bedside, and was heading toward the bathroom to wash up most likely.
"Hey" He said to her before she could enter it.
She stopped and turned to face him, raising her eyebrows a little to show she was asking him what he wanted her attention for. She still looked like she was probably barely paying attention to reality right now & still burning inside of her head.
Taking a moment to look at her face, sadness shining from it.
He lifted his bloody hand. "Could use some help" He didn't need it at all, he could do it himself easily but he knew she needed to distract herself so he was helping with that.
She appeared to be zoning back in a little more now. "Right." She said & took a couple of steps toward him. "You have any bandages?" She questioned.
"I believe there are some in that nightstand your closest to" He nodded his head a little in the direction. She walked over & bent over so she could open it up, taking her only a few seconds to find the gauze-wrapping bandages. He sat down in the wooden chair that was in the corner, pulling it over so he was able to sit in it. Placing it in front of the only couch in the room that was in front of the window by the door.
Allowing her to sit in the more comfortable of the two options.
She walked over & sat down on the couch down & he held out his hand. She halted before reaching out, furrowing her brows at the fact the blood loss was already slowing down to a pretty slow rate.
He noticed her reaction. "I take pain & heal a little differently than others." He said to her & she peeked up to stare at him when he spoke. "Perks of being a Grimm I guess."
She was about to just wrap his hand by using her powers. "Like a person without telekinesis powers would do it." He said to her & she gave him a look but didn't argue. He actually would have let her do it with her powers but he wanted to help her mind be at ease even for a little.
She still must have been distracted in her thoughts because she still seemed off to him. "Sounds like you have had plenty of chances to test out that theory" She said, referring to his perks of being a Grimm comment as she used the cloth from his shirt that he had ripped off earlier to clean off some of the residues of blood all over his hand.
"Well, I been hospitalized by a Siegbarste" He started.
She looked up at him again. "A Siegbarste? Now that couldn't have been pleasant at all" She said knowingly. "They don't go down easy if that's even possible for them too. What did you do?" Adalind continued to wipe the blood now after she asked, but her interest was caught.
"Besides get thrown all over my house? Nothing much on that one actually. Monroe did" She didn't look up but he could see her eyebrows furrow in more wonder.
"Theirs only a handful of ways to take one down so how'd he pull that one off?" She asked as she set the cloth aside now that she was done wiping it. Leaning closer now so she could get a better look at his injured but healing left hand.
He didn't respond immediately as he enjoyed the memory of that day. Not being in the hospital obviously but he and Monroe became true friends that day. "I had Siegbarste bullets & this stuff that was supposed to take them out. Siegbarste gift I think it's called. Been a while."
She had a highly intrigued look in her eyes as she looked up at him again. "Really? That calcifies their bones doesn't it?" He was a little taken aback that she knew.
"Yeah, it does."
"Now that's not something you get to hear about every day. Rare even." She began opening the package on the gauze now.
Siegbarste is pretty normal but running into a Seltenvogel isn't" He recalled that day, when he was supposed to be on a getaway with Juliette. Her face popped back up to his again in astonishment.
"You met a Seltenvogel!" She exclaimed in a hushed whisper.
"You know what they are?" He couldn't hide the surprise from his voice.
"Kind of timid & shy? They grow a golden egg in their throat, right? Thought they were extinct!" She may have asked in amazement but Nick was the one who was even more fascinated himself. She knew a lot, a whole lot. He knew he shouldn't be surprised but it was still amazing to hear.
"Yes" He answered with the same fascinated tone he was feeling.
"Is she alive? I know if you don't get the Unbezahlbar out of their necks they can die for obvious reasons."
"No I saved her, Monroe & Rosalee talked me through how to cut it out for her before Timmy showed back up" Nick remembered that asshole's name was usually Tim but he decided to mock it at the annoyance of the memory.
"Who was he?" She asked. Looking down now to start wrapping his hand now.
"He was the husband. Klaustreich." Nick added on to let her know what he was. Adalind knew what that was too because she made a face of disgust.
"A Klaustreich & a Seltenvogel together? Bad news for the Seltenvogel then. Seeing as Klaustreich are usually aggressive, greedy, selfish dicks" She said with a stone face as she held his fingers open a little to make sure she was wrapping the bandages tight & neat.
Nick nodded in agreement at that statement but remembered another quality about them. "I thought most women love them though" He gave her a suggestive look & she could hear the insinuation. Giving him a mocking smirk.
"Yes most. But Hexenbiest like power, not someone trying to have it all as Klaustreichs do." She informed. "So no, not my type." Giving him another smile. "I choose royal bastards who only give a damn about themselves." She said it under her breath but not quietly.
He didn't say a word but looked at her & even he knew he couldn't deny the sympathy in his gaze this time. He hated her but...He paused in his mind for a moment.
Hates! Hates not hated! He exclaimed at himself mentally. Hates her but Renard taking her child from her even had him feeling for her. Diana as well even though she was too young to know the pain of not having your mother or even your father in life.
Then again, how Diana is from what he has seen. She may be fully aware for all he knew. The girl was powerful that's for sure.
He thought about saying something comforting but he didn't really know what & it felt weird to do it. A lot of weird has been going on lately as a matter of fact. He was about to get up and just say he had to use the bathroom & tell her he would finish wrapping it himself because he needed to get away from her for a moment. It felt weird to him again like when he picked her up and carried her to bed at Monroe & Rosalee's.
The problem was he couldn't just escape since she was asleep this time. She was finishing up though but spoke. "I assume you went to go see Juliette after I fell asleep at Monroe & Rosalee's" She asked out of nowhere & his eyes snapped up to look at hers.
She wasn't looking up but her face showed she knew he was looking at her but that she was on purposely not looking up.
Adalind knew she probably knocked him off his guard with that one but she wanted to get the attention off of her after the silence became a little awkward after her Renard diss.
She thought he probably wasn't going to answer her so she was going to hurry up & finish up the wrap job she was doing.
"She wasn't there" He said somewhat darkly but with some hurt in it. She did finish now but she didn't notice she was still holding his hand. He must not have either.
She stared back up at him with those big blue, doe-like eyes of hers. "What do you mean?" She had to admit, she never liked the bitch or understood the appeal to her but then again, she only sees the nasty side of her so who knows. But she knows he loves her for some reason so must be something nice about her. Something.
"I finished up some things then went back home. She wasn't there so I guess she either was taking a walk or a late night, dangerous bike ride to blow off steam. Wouldn't be the first time."
Adalind nodded her head & rubbed her thumb in soft circles on the top of his hand. Telling herself she was making sure the bandage was smooth & tight but it sure didn't feel like that was why she was doing it.
It must have dawned on them both because then they got silent once again. Nick looked down at her hand holding his as she looked at it as well. He squinted his eyes & then that damn feeling came again. Where it was weird that it wasn't weird like it should have been.
They both snapped their hands apart & she stood up abruptly. "I'm going to go take a bath" She rattled off in a hurry.
"It's just a shower" He called out to her as she walk past him to the bathroom, he never turned around though.
"Even better" She said in more of a hurry & closed the door. She walked towards the mirror again & looked at herself deeply. "What the hell" She said to herself in an exasperated whisper. It's only been a few days & you are acting like this with somebody you use to hate.
That you do hate! See you are even having to tell yourself you still hate him & this isn't the first time. But it's like she told herself earlier in the day.
Lately, the word hate just feels empty now. She is not even sure if the extreme disliking is as much as it should be. One shower though & her head will be back on right, she's sure of it.
Nick spent his time outside for a little bit waiting while she showered.
Still can't believe he let her not only talk to him, not only touch him but have him not mind any of it at all & a dark part of him probably welcomed it. The nerve of her!
That dark part of him had him even more worried because he should have been pissed or disgusted. He was also bothered by the fact that besides when she just asked him, he hasn't thought about Juliette once this whole time this started. Not on the plane.
Not on the drive to this hotel. Not when he almost could have died in Frau Pech's house.
Nothing.
Nick wasn't the best when it came to feelings but, something told him that's not something somebody in love like he is should have happened to them. It has been very busy, stressful days though so he gave himself a pass. He hasn't even had much sleep, so his mind is more fatigue than anything else.
Adalind finished her shower & she saw he wasn't in the room but outside, she was sure glad. She forgot to bring in the other pair of the two outfits Nick got her to wear for sleep. Even though she was pretty sure at the time he got them, he wasn't sure if they would even have time to sleep.
She peeked her head out a little more & she saw him through the slight opening of the curtain on the window. She used her powers to float the suitcase towards her.
Now some would have asked him to just hand it to her but she was too stubborn. He already was helping her with enough as it is.
She almost was too loud though as it floated over to her and it bumped into the door for a moment & then dropped to the floor with a thud. Not a loud one but still. She thought to herself how ridiculous this was & she was glad that he was too lost in his thoughts to see how this was going. She was almost pretty sure he looked back for a moment but he was just turning his head slightly.
She picked out the clothes. A simple dark grey shirt & the night pants were the same.
She exited the bathroom now & peeked outside to be met by his gaze when he turned toward her. That moonlight shining on his pupils looked beautiful on the eyes she had to admit. "I'm done, if you wanna..." She trailed off.
He furrowed his lips a little & gave her a nod. Walking in & grabbing some clothes out of his suitcase. "Don't want to forget these" He said as he got to the bathroom door. "Or I'll end up like you" He said teasingly & she looked at the door as he closed it. So he knew the whole time what was going on. She wanted to roll her eyes but she ended up quietly giggling for a moment at that.
She realized now though that she hadn't thought about the pain of not having Diana.
The conversation with him & helping him wrap up his hand had distracted her a good enough amount so she was torturing herself with terrible ideas of what could be happening to her or if they fail tomorrow. She looked at her jacket on the floor again at that thought & that guilty feeling came again as she stared at the pocket. That needed to stop. She didn't have anything to be guilty about. Technically.
A few moments past & Nick stepped out of the bathroom now. He saw the lights were off & that she was on the bed. He had a strong feeling she most likely wasn't asleep but maybe she was. He grabbed the little sheet off of the couch & tried his best to get comfortable in it as he could. The couch already barely qualified as a couch & not to mention it was pretty cold in Vienna right now.
"Nick" He heard her say. Well, he had an answer now on if she was asleep or not. "What?" He asked. It was pretty dark & a normal person probably wouldn't be able to see her but his Grimm eyes probably help him out because he can see she is laying down but completely facing upwards. Staring at the ceiling.
"You really think we'll get her back?" Her voice cracked a little when she asked.
"We will." He said calmly. Staring into the darkness of the room. "Why didn't you leave?" He asked out loud. He could hear her rustle the bed from moving her head. She looked in his direction before staring back up at the ceiling.
"What do you mean?"
"Frau Pech's house. The blade was after me not you, you knew that. But you stayed anyway when you could have left. Why?" He meant to ask earlier but it slipped his thoughts at the time.
She remained silent for a moment.
Contemplating how to answer that, until she realized. She didn't have an answer. She wasn't sure why. Even when she was battling on whether or not to take the phone, leaving him was never a thought. Sadly, betraying him was & she knows that's where this guilt feeling bubbles up from sometimes even though she can't fully admit that to herself. But even then she didn't stay because of the alleged guilt or anything.
She just did.
"I-I don't know" She spoke in a way Nick never expected from her to him. Like she didn't have an explanation for it but like it just felt wrong to do it. Possibly he was looking too deep into it but that's how it came off to him.
She didn't leave. Wow.
The hate he used to have for her, honestly felt not as burning passionate as it use to he starting to realize.
"You think one of us is going to die tomorrow?" She asked.
Nick knew there were a lot of unknowns that were going to happen tomorrow. That there was no way possible this plan was going to go off without something going completely wrong but he didn't care. "I don't think this plan is going to go off perfectly. I don't think it's going to be easy. But I know..." He knows she probably can't see him but he can see her so he turned to look at her.
Adalind felt tears brimming once again but she could feel he was looking at her.
"I know we are going to get her back. I promise" He said so firmly & bluntly. But so genuine & so sincerely. She felt the tears that were resting at the bottom of her eyelids fall out at a slow, but frequent pace.
No truer pain, then silent tears.
She made sure to get the lump out of her throat from the cries. Adalind hated all the tears she has shed but she knew she probably wouldn't stop until Diana was back in her arms, cuddled up against her, safely.
"Thank you" She finally managed to say. "Even if tomorrow everything goes wrong, if one of us dies or both. Thank you." He looked over at her again, he felt like he should say something but he didn't really know what & she probably didn't want him to.
"I know you have done a lot & risked a lot to do this for me or Diana when you had no reason to but..." She was speaking so frantic with the tearful pain evident in her words. "No one has ever-" She didn't even know what to say.
How can you tell someone who you dislike & who dislikes you back that he is the only one who has truly done anything for you out of kindness? She has never been shown true kindness in her life she is sure of it. Because if she was, it would have felt like this & she never has had that feeling. Anytime someone did something for her it was because they expected something in return or because it was a job.
Or they were just flat-out using her.
She just wishes it wasn't him who did show her it first because it's fucking with her head on how she is supposed to feel about it because of their usual feeling toward each other. She knows what she is supposed to feel toward him but why does it just feel wrong now?
All she knows is currently right now. He has somewhat uprooted his life, possibly ruined his relationship, and put his life in grave danger all just to help you because you asked. Not to mention as much distrusting you were & possibly still are of him, he is of you as well. He has more reason to worry that you'll screw him over than you do of him yet here he was still. All those red flags & risks but he still said yes to helping you, when even she would admit she probably didn't deserve it.
Because he wants a mother & child together. Why he was trying so hard on that she doesn't know but still. Even his friends. They heard nothing but bad things about her most likely, yet welcomed her into their home despite it all. Took care of her while she was there too.
No lies, manipulations, or end goals.
Just being nice because that's who they are. Not like how it was or would be with the royals or anyone else she has known previously in her life. This made her think about earlier when she was thinking about her screwing him over & handing him to the royals while hoping to strike a deal to live in the castle with Diana if she had to. She told herself she was going to be a good mother & a better person.
A good mother can't have her child around the royals. No matter what it takes, you can't do that to her.
And you can't do that to him.
You are no better than the Royals if you did. She looked over at her jacket pocket again which was on the floor still. The inferno of culpability in her stomach was flaring as she watched it.
"I didn't have my parents growing up" His voice startled her. She wondered why he spoke & then she remembered she just stopped speaking earlier & went into her self-revealing thoughts. Adalind heard the reluctance & resignation in him at talking about opening up about this, especially to her most likely. "I know you met my mom but my whole life I thought she was dead. My dad actually is."
She turned on her side to face his direction.
"All I had growing up was the pain of wondering why my mother kept leaving me until she left me forever, until a year ago. I had that but I also had my Aunt Marie. We may have moved around a lot & I use to hate it but she was the best mother I could have had. Because she was there." Adalind could see he may have been speaking to her but she could tell from what she could see in the darkness that he was talking like nobody was there. Just staring at the ceiling & talking because it wouldn't speak back so she took that role as well.
"But I still always had that abandonment feeling from my actual mom in the back of my mind forever. I know we hate each other. But I can't let any kid experience what I went through. A feeling that sticks with you & never goes away. Even to this day." He wiped his hand over his face & she couldn't tell if it was wiping away slight tears but she knew it was him snapping out of his trance.
It did make her feel truly bad about trying to kill his Aunt Marie now. "I'm so sorry" she came out so gentle as she said it. "For trying to kill her." She sounded the same amount of gentle but some disappointment in her as well.
"Guess I understand that feeling." She put her hands together in a clapping form under her head as she fully flipped on her side to face his direction, laying down. "After you took my powers. She just disowned me as a daughter. So I promise Diana I would be a better person & mother than she ever was to me."
She went back to looking at the ceiling herself now.
"That's why I said thank you for all of this."
She had a feeling he most likely wasn't going to speak anymore, she didn't know him much personally obviously. But he didn't seem like the opening-up type & what he said for sure brought up a lot of personal demons he still is battling. Something she is starting to understand herself each passing minute since having Diana.
"Get some sleep" He spoke through a croak, but gentle tone.
She rolled over & reached inside of her jacket pocket to pull out the phone she took. No longer able to deny the guilt that was budding at her for it. She couldn't anymore, she was upset at herself for allowing more tears to burn her eyelids from her holding them back.
She would get rid of it later but she told herself mentally. Scolded herself more like it.
That her old ways are done & that even when it gets hard as it is like right now. She'll try to do the right thing or at least have morals more.
Diana was going to have a mother who showed her the right way not just spoke about it.
Nick knows he should get some sleep but his brain was much like his eyes, still as ever. About what he said but also about what was going to happen tomorrow. He knew that no matter what was going to get Diana back for her. But he started having a deeper feeling that his "sacrifices" have only just begun.
He just hopes it wasn't his life.
For some reason, he had a feeling, that this trip was only a one-way trip for one of them & he truly started to think. It probably is him. He took a deep breath & rolled over on the couch a little, closing his eyes. Hoping that this night's sleep...
Wasn't his last.
AU: Another long one, I'm sorry haha! I know it was pretty obvious but I was trying to draw it out if she took the phone or not until the end. Do you guys think it'll matter later or...?
Thank you for all the wonderful reviews by the way! My most reviewed story ever! I truly love them all & hope you all are enjoying this story as much as I enjoy reading your reviews. Shoutout to everybody who has mostly reviewed every chapter as well. Sorry for having Nick a little out of character but I think I've had him out of character most of this story anyways hehe.
Hope to have another chapter uploaded soon. Enjoy!
Edit: Thank you to GrimmFan for letting me know about the grammar issues. I believe I didn't check it as well as I should have! Also, my misspelling of "doe" made me laugh.
Also glad that Nick is in character good enough for the guest reviewer! I was worried about that.
I wish I could reply to all of your reviews honestly, I feel like I could have good conversations with all of you haha!
