The sky was tainted orange and was filled with screams as a large number of citizens of Mondstadt hurried out of the city. Some hurried towards the church, and fewer still hid in their home cellars. The entire city was set ablaze as never before seen monsters razed their former homes. The adventurers guild tried all they can and valiantly fell one by one as the numbers were absolutely overwhelming. What made things worse was the fact that the said monsters were using an unknown element, wherein hardly any one of the vision holders can take advantage off. Save only a handful Anemo and Geo holders who can at most provide crowd control or protection. The creatures came without warning. First came the rifthounds which were quite easy to handle, that is, until they found out the rifthounds were literally creating rifts both outside and inside the city. These rifts provided the chance for the unknown monsters to come pouring in from all directions. By the time anyone knew about the rifts, it was already too late. Many of the citizens were able to hide, while some took to the waters and escaped.
The knights of Favonius was the first to respond, and also the first to nearly fall completely. Jean was in the thick of the battle when she heard a shout and then a shudder behind her. She turned and saw one of her men, impaled by the unknown creature, whose attack was intended for her. With an angry howl she let off her gale blade, launching the enemy away from them, at the same time catching the knight as he fell forward towards her. Looking over her shoulder as she laid him down, she saw Kaeya being pressed hard as he was being ganged up on by several rifthounds and two of the unknowns. She was about to command the remaining forces to regroup and help when the rifthounds got peppered with fiery arrows. swinging her head towards the source, she can see Amber on top of one of the city gates preparing to shoot another volley. Jean then stretched out her hand, screaming with a horrified look on her face as she tried to warn Amber. She can only watch in horror as Amber's eyes, which were usually full of life and joviality, lose their light as one of the unknown creatures stabbed her with, from what she can tell, a lance. Amber coughed out blood as she grabbed the lance and with a final sign of defiance used whatever strength she had left, called upon here trusty baron bunny and smiled bitterly. Both she and the creature were caught in the blast, freeing her body. Alas, the creature was mostly unharmed.
Another shout caught Jean's attention and she looked back and saw that the battle was not going well for them. Kaeya managed to fend off the mob attacking him, but not without a price. Jean numbly looked over his injuries, seeing a lot of deep gashes. But what stood out was the bleeding left stump where his arm used to be. Kaeya was bandaging it up himself, one hand manipulating the bloodied cloth while biting on the other end to hold it in place. Drawing blood as she bit her lip in frustration, she stood up and issued the order to form a circular formation around Kaeya. She had hoped Diluc would show up and she would gladly hand him command of their remaining forces. However, seeing smoke rising from his winery meant he had troubles of his own. She had hoped the smoke rising from the city would catch Albedo's attention and Eula's as well. It was unfortunate that Eula was on Dragonspine during the first hour of the invasion, but also fortunate that Klee went with her. She went over to Kaeya and lent him her shoulder. They then had a slow trek towards a safe zone they created earlier.
The safe zone was currently filled with the wounded. A strong stench of blood filled the air as Diona, Barbara and Noelle went from cot to cot provide healing, while Bennet and Razor filled two of the cots as they were both caught unawares while visiting Andrius. Sucrose stood at the middle, concentrating hard together with Mona and Lisa as they maintained a barrier around the safe zone barring the invaders from entering. A deafening howl could be heard across the skies as Dvalin did his best to protect the city. They all knew he wouldn't last long as the sheer number he is facing is like a tidal wave rushing towards a tiny pebble. Andrius could be seen running in a huge circle around them, providing what little assistance he can after he rushed both Bennet and Razor earlier to them. This was the state of the safe zone when Jean arrived with her remaining retinue and Kaeya. The traveller, had gone to Liyue to seek their assistance as this was definitely something they alone will not be able to hold back for long.
Biting her lips hard and clenching her fist until they bleed, Jean could only silently vent her frustration. Earlier they were doing better as Venti, who she also knew as Barbatos in human form, was there to help them. However, in the middle of the battle, he suddenly fell to the ground. It was only with Dvalin's timely intervention that save him. It was then they found out that somehow, Venti's powers was severely weakened. The wide eyed look in his face was the last she saw when another beast came diving from the skies and snatched him away. In a gruesome blood fest a number of other creatures flew over and in the sky ripped his mortal body to bits. Knowing that Venti was still an archon, meant that though his mortal body was destroyed, his actual essence was still with them.
"Traveler, please come soon. I fear that all of Mondstadt will be destroyed soon" Jean intoned as she laid Kaeya down.
"Grandmaster! Look in the sky!" one of the knights ran over pointing towards the south western sky.
Jean looked up, and for the first time after hours of grueling battle, she smiled. "You made it!"
