I'm in Pain, Maur!
"Maur, it tingles." Jane complained as she snuggled up to Maura on the couch and pulled the blanket over herself. When Jane didn't feel well and it was just her and Maura she was like a big baby. If Angela or someone else was around you wouldn't even know that Jane was not feeling well except for the fact she would be quiet.
"Jane, it is just tingling, or is it throbbing also, or is it switching back and forth?" Maura asked as Jane then laid her head on Maura's lap and rearranged the blanket. She was trying so hard to get comfortable. She turned her head so she could look up at Maura. "No, just tingling now, it was throbbing last night. Can't you do something? I'm in a lot of pain, Maur." Jane asked as her arms started to fail about. She was uncomfortable and she wanted Maura to know it. Maura already knew it, as Jane had tossed and turned last night, so she knew something was bugging her detective.
"Jane, did you make an appointment like I asked you to?" Maura asked knowing already that her brave fearless badass detective wife had not done as she asked. Jane hated going to see doctors there was only one doctor she felt comfortable with and that was Maura.
"Well, … no … I got busy and forgot." Jane explained hoping her loving adorable wife would help her out. Jane was now holding one hand over her jaw where the softball had hit her earlier last week.
"Jane, I told you that we should have gone straight to the dentist's office to make sure you didn't break any teeth."
"I know, I know, I should have listened to you. You know how much I hate going to the dentist, almost as much as I hate going to the hospital when I get injured." Jane's voice was distorted because of the pain and the fact that she wouldn't take her hand away from her jaw.
"I will call the dentist and see how soon they can get you in." Maura stated as she leaned down and gave Jane a kiss on the forehead.
Maura picked up her cell phone and called the dentist's office. After a brief moment on pause, she was told that they could squeeze Jane in at 3 PM. Now Maura had to figure out how to keep her wife happy until then. It was only 10 AM and one of the few days off they had had in quite a while.
Maura rose from the sofa and went to the medicine cabinet. She was pretty sure she had some tooth pain medicine that she used with the children. Sure, enough she found some and came back downstairs to put some on Jane's tooth for her. She used some Orajel to assist with Jane's tooth pain and gave her some ibuprofen to assist with the overall pain.
Within twenty minutes Jane's pain died down and she was a little more comfortable. She went upstairs and took a shower and got dressed. Maura fixed a light lunch for them and Jane laid back down on the sofa with her head in Maura's lap again until it was time to go. Maura just ran her hands through Jane's hair as Jane relaxed.
Jane managed to fall asleep and Maura was thankful for that. When Jane doesn't feel well, she is cranky and very cuddly. The cuddly Jane, Maura can handle, the cranky Jane not so much. So, she was glad that Jane had fallen asleep. She really didn't like seeing her in pain.
As Jane laid there, she dreamt about getting hit in the mouth with the softball.
Two Weeks Prior
They were at Softball practice and Jane was playing first base. Crowe threw the ball hard and it took a bad bounce and flew up and hit her in the jaw on the left side of her face. She fell down to the ground in pain. Maura went running over to her as did half of the team. Jane got back up like nothing happened. Maura said, "Jane we should go to the dentist and make sure you didn't break any teeth. I can see the bruise forming already. That was a hard hit." Jane refused just like she did anytime she got hurt. She just wanted Maura to fix her up. They continued to practice and when practice was over, she put some ice on her jaw. Over the next few days, the bruise went through several color changes and Jane didn't think anything about it until her tooth started tingling and throbbing.
They left the house at 2:15 so they would be to the dentist on time. Maura had called Angela earlier to pick up the children for her. Angela knew that Jane wouldn't be good company so she volunteered to keep the children overnight. They all had an assortment of clothes at their nonna's house and they loved having slumber parties with their nonna.
Angela had called Constance to see if they wanted to have a movie night with her and the children. Constance and Arthur loved to spend time with their grandchildren. Constance told Angela to bring the children over to her house.
Jane and Maura arrived at the dentist's office at 2:48 and were immediately taken back. The technician took x-rays and when the dentist came in, he told Jane that she had two broken teeth and that one had abscessed and that is why she was experiencing pain. He also told her she should have come in as soon as it happened. Jane just looked at Maura, who merely lifted her eyebrows at her, mentally saying 'see, I told you.' She knew Maura wouldn't say it though, it was not in her nature. Jane knew she was wrong and now she was paying for it.
The doctor patched up the teeth temporarily and prescribed some pain medicine for Jane to take as well as some antibiotics to help with the infection. He would need to see Jane in two weeks for a root canal on the infected tooth. Jane was not looking forward to that.
Two weeks later Jane had to see the endodontist. She had to wait for the antibiotics to kick in. Maura made sure that the dentist knew to make sure the area around the tooth was really numb. She knew Jane wouldn't want to feel anything. A little over an hour later the root canal was done and Maura took her home to sleep off the numbness. The next day she saw her dentist for her crown. Jane would make sure to pay attention to her injuries in the future she didn't want to go through anything like this again.
