Chapter 10
Jimmy woke the following morning. He groaned as he sat up. The bandage on his back and arm was pulling and it hurt. He was sore. He looked over to Lucas and froze.
"Luke?"
Luke didn't stir. He just kept snoring. He had drool running out his mouth.
"Luke!" Jimmy yelled.
"What!" Luke yelled jumping up.
He grabbed his head and laid back down.
"What the hell is going on?" Jimmy asked.
"What you mean?"
"You see something wrong here?"
Luke eased back up and looked around. He fell back again.
"Oh shit."
"Ya damn right, oh shit."
"How could we get robbed and not hear anything?"
"Well, my hearing ain't great not to mention that I was a little irritated and tired. Can you guess now?" Jimmy said grumpily.
"But I should have heard something. Why wouldn't I hear….." Luke started but dropped off.
"What is it?"
"I heard something last night in the trees, I went to look but no one was there."
"And?"
"When I came back, my cup was moved. My head is killing me. They must have slipped something in my coffee."
"Who the fuck are we dealing with here?" Jimmy said annoyed.
"They took everything." Luke whined.
Jimmy motioned for his son to come help him up. Luke pulled him to his feet.
"You ok?"
"Not really."
"What do we do now?"
"Start walking." Jimmy grumbled.
"How far is the next town?"
"Bout five miles I'd say."
"Man, fuck."
"Shut up. We got to get there and get back home in time for Lori's wedding. If we don't make it back, we might as well go ahead and dig ourselves a hole now." Said Jimmy.
"Maybe I should go ahead and come back for you. I'm not the one who's shot."
"No, I'm coming. I'm gonna say it again, this trip just keeps getting better and better."
Luke and Jimmy trudged along the trail trying to make the next town before nightfall. Luke walked along humming and kicking at rocks. The longer Jimmy walked, the more irritated that he became. He watched Luke walk along happily. He couldn't take it anymore.
"God, will you shut up!"
"It helps pass the time." Luke said looking over at his Dad.
"I had to listen to Cody sing on every damn run that we went on. I have had enough!"
Luke quieted as his father shouted. He knew he was grumpy and pissed.
"Maybe we should take a break."
"No."
"Come on. We been walking for a while now and I think you need a break." Luke said looking at how his father was walking humped over.
"You been around Cody lately and not tell me? You sound just like him."
"Dad, you are moody and tired. Half the day is gone, and you look like you are in pain. Let's just take a break."
Jimmy grumbled something that Luke couldn't make out, but he nodded. The two made their way over to some trees. Jimmy eased down on the ground to lean back against one of them. He closed his eyes.
"You want me to wake you in few minutes?" Luke asked.
"I ain't going to sleep. Just restin my eyes for a few."
Luke sat and watched the trail hoping for a wagon, a rider, anyone to come down it but it was like they were the only two in the world. He looked down the trail in the other direction when he heard the loud snore come from beside him. He shook his head and smiled. He looked ahead down the trail again. Maybe he would walk down a ways, just to see if he saw anyone. He stood and started walking.
