It was October when eight-year-old Peggy Smith walked into Perry's office. She had asked him for help in finding out who she was. Perry went to talk to the headmistress of Peggy's school while Della went with Peggy to her room. "That's a lovely doll," Della said.

"Her name is Maggie."

"Really?" Della smiled, "we have a baby girl named Maggie. Well, Margaret," she said.

"How old is she?"

"Six months old."

"She's very lucky to have parents. Do you have other children?"

"We have a one-year-old girl named Vivian, and a two-year-old girl named Maureen. We also have a son we adopted, Nicholas. Nicky's sixteen years old."

"That's nice that they all have each other."

Perry and the headmistress walked into the room. They began discussing Peggy's dolls. It broke Della's heart to leave the little girl. When she found out that her husband was making a stop in Switzerland on his way to his fishing trip, she threw herself into his arms.

Della rode with Perry to the airport and Nicky picked her up. He could tell that something was bothering her. "Did you and dad have a fight?"

"No," she answered.

"Well, what's got you so weepy?"

"A little girl came to the office today."

"She in trouble?"

"She was dropped off at Westcroft school when she was three. She's asked your father to help her find out who she is and to find her family."

"That sucks," he said, "poor kid. Let me guess, dad's gonna spend some of his trip searching?"

Della smiled, "yes, yes he is."

"And you're going back to see her, aren't you?"

"Tomorrow," Della said.

"Why don't I go with you?"

"I'd like that."

The next day, Nicky and Della went to Westcroft. Peggy was thrilled to see the woman again. "I told you I'd visit soon," Della said after the girl held onto her for dear life.

"I didn't expect to see you this soon."

"Peggy, this is my son, Nicky," Della said.

Nicky crouched down, "I'm really happy to meet you, Peggy," he said as he shook her small hand.

"Nice to meet you."

The little girl showed Nicky her dolls. The two told the little girl that they had to go because of the baby but would make sure to see her again. On the way home, Della was quiet. "I know what you're thinking," Nicky said.

"Oh, and just what might that be?"

"You want to adopt Peggy."

"Peggy's family might be found."

"If they are, they may not agree to take her. Look, she's a sweet kid, but we both know that there's more to the story. Her parents abandoned her and if they'd wanted her, they wouldn't have. I'm not defending them, but there are bad parents out there. They could be a couple of them."

"I know," Della said, "I just want what's best for her."

What Della didn't know, was that Perry was in Switzerland having the same thoughts.

Perry ended up finding out that Peggy's father and mother, Margaret, had died. He'd found her grandfather and her mother's cousin. The woman denied Peggy's existence and relation. She wanted nothing to do with the girl, but Perry was determined. The grandfather was delighted to be reunited with Peggy, but the reunion was short-lived. That night, he was murdered and Linda Osborne, Margaret's cousin, was arrested. Perry agreed to defend the woman, but his home life was about to turn upside down.
