Della did struggle after Perry's death. She was able to keep going with the love and support of her family. One spring day, Della received a shocking phone call. Jenny had been in a car accident. She didn't make it. Everyone was stunned and distraught. Jenny was ten years younger than Della. She was healthy, vibrant, and lively. It wasn't just her children who were distraught. Perry and Della's children were as well. She had been with them since they were born. She'd welcomed Peggy and Nicky with open arms. While she wasn't watching Nicky because he was old enough, she still took care of him. She'd play games and be silly with all eight of the kids. She'd make time for them if they were sad and took care of them when they were sick. She always told them that she was a phone call away. When she and Denny got engaged, the children were ecstatic. While she had always been a member of their family, now it was going to be official. Jenny had once told Della that everything she knew about being a mother, she'd learned from her. Jenny was a surrogate mother to the Mason children. She loved them as if they were her own children. Her kids were never jealous because she never made them feel like she loved them any less. They were also a lot younger than their cousins. Perry had given Jenny away at her wedding to Denny. He and Della were the godparents to their children. Jenny went to Della when she was diagnosed with post-natal depression. Denny went to Perry. The older couple helped them get through that time. Della was the sister that Jenny had never had. Soon, she became a sister to Gertie and Penny too. They always had fun together. Now, they were gone and Della was still there. This is not how it was supposed to be. Jenny wasn't supposed to die so young. Della wasn't supposed to outlive her.

That October, Patrick died from a brain aneurysm, leaving Della as the sole survivor of their generation. No one wants to be the only one left. Luckily, she had plenty of children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews to keep her company and happy.
