Chapter two:
After about a week Sans has been sitting up more. He also doesn't have the tube of oxygen. He still has nightmares but Papyrus shines his soul to let Sans feel it, which has helped.
The doctor wanted to try him without the tube and so far it's been good.
Though the IV is still there, to make sure that he doesn't lose too much magic as he heals.
Papyrus still insists on feeding him, though he can tell his brother is making progress. He is allowed to stay with his brother all the time; the doctors know that it'll be beneficial for their mental health. He understands that other than family Sans shouldn't be having visitors. He knows that right bow he needs to be able to recover a bit more before such excitement. He is currently keeping him company by showing him the books that he brought. "We could totally read them together to pass the time." He tells his brother as the selection is stacked on the free space of the bed. "What one do you like the best?"
Before Sans can answer there is a soft knock at the door.
The two turn towards the door and see the doctor who has been with them since the start.
"Greetings Doc. What's on the agenda today?" Papyrus greets as the doctor heads inside of the room. His smile is very friendly to the doctor since the other has been so kind.
"Well now that he seems to be doing better I think we can take the next step." The doctor informs them causing them both to look curiously at him. "Right now don't expect huge steps forward. Though I am pleased with his progress so far. I want him to try standing. Well get to walking later. One step at a time." He moves closer and looks to Sans especially. "With the damage to your legs and body it'll be a bit of a struggle. You'll have to pretty much reteach yourself to stand and walk."
Papyrus can see something flash in the doctor's eye and gets worried. "What are you not telling us?"
The doctor glances to him a little surprised before closing his eyes as he sighs. His ears folding back a little. He opens his eyes with a serious look even moving his ears up a little. "Well... There is a chance that his injuries won't let him walk again. There is a chance that he won't have a good quality of life. Though I'm hoping that starting things a little early will help to avoid some bad future things." He explains causing the brothers to look down. "Look at it this way. I wasn't sure that Sans would actually pull through. Now he can sit, even if he still has to lean on the raised bed sometimes, so let's try to hope he follows this."
Papyrus nods and gets to his feet. He turns to Sans with an encouraging smile. "He's right. You're strong Sans." His words bring his brothers attention to him. "I believe in you!"
Sans smiles a little and nods. He lets the doctor move the IV tube so it won't get in the way.
Papyrus also helps as he moves the books.
With everything set for Sans to be able to try standing he takes a big breath. He moves his body until he's turned with his feet hanging off the side. He does admit that his body is a little heavy, and where the bandages are on his body makes them feel stiff. He supposed that there isn't pain due to a meringue they gave him. He's just glad that he was able to turn. He takes another big breath before pushing off the bed. His feet land on the floor and he tries to stand up. For a moment it works... He however becomes wobbly, feeling like one leg especially is ready to collapse, and stumbles forward only to fall forward. He closes his eyes ready for the impact. He lands on a familiar body which causes him to blink his eyes open. He looks up only to see his brothers smiling face.
"You did great Sans." Papyrus informs him still smiling. "I am so proud of you."
Sans relaxes upon hearing this feeling a bit better about having fallen.
After a moment of hugging the two move apart, enough that Papyrus can have his hands under Sanss armpits, to try to get Sans to stand.
Papyrus is hoping that with this his brother will be able to recover quicker. He wants his brother to see how strong he is despite the attack. He sees the wobble of the injured leg and picks him up. "It's okay brother. Well get there." He gently lays him back in bed.
"It is good that he has a support system with you." The doctor tells Papyrus as he moves in after the other steps back. He checks on Sanss leg to make sure it didn't break. He unwraps the bandages and finds that luckily the wound didn't cause any cracking. He puts fresh bandages on it. "I'll let you rest." He heads off out of the room.
"I'll get us something to eat. I'll see if they have one of your favourites." Papyrus promises then heads out and goes after the doctor. He skids to a stop as the other stops then turns hearing his footsteps. "Doctor. I wanna know something. I saw that wound and I didn't want to ask in front of my brother." He glances down but quickly reminds himself that he needs to know. He looks back to the doctor. "Will his wounds fully heal? Or will they scar?" He really hopes that Sanss bones will heal and grow back, so the other won't have to be reminded of this by scars. His hope of that drops as the doctor slightly glances away.
"The wounds are too severe." The doctor informs Papyrus who now glances away; though the skeleton is still listening. "He will have scars from all of this. The teeth marks will remain. His ribs will heal the best out of the scarred areas. And there doesn't seem to be any hope that Sans will be able to use his damaged eye." He adds and notices Papyruss hands clench into fists. "If I am to be honest it would be like the eye was ripped out in the attack. I would want his scars to be able to be covered up... However the worst of his scarring will be on his face."
"I see." Papyrus nods softly after hearing this and turns away. "Thank you doctor. I'll do what I can for him. Even with these scars." He heads off to go to the cafeteria to get food like he said he would.
The next day the doctor has them ready to try standing again.
Sans shares a look with his brother who smiles comfortingly. He pushes off the bed putting his feet to the ground. He stands for a moment and feeling more stable than yesterday he tries taking a step... Only for his injured leg to buckle under him and he falls.
Papyrus is just a little in front of him so he manages to grab onto his brother. "You can do this." He helps him stand once more and Sans takes a deep breath. He slowly releases the other who this time moves his injured leg in the first step.
Sans shifts and tries to take another step only to fall into his brothers arms again.
"You did great this time." Papyrus places his brother back into bed. "Now you should rest up a bit more."
"Papyrus."
"Yes brother?"
"Can you sleep close to me?" Sans nervously requests slightly glancing away. "I'm scared of the nightmares. I don't want to sleep."
At this request Papyrus smiles. "Of course I can brother. I'll be here if you have a nightmare." He climbs onto the bed laying on his side next to Sans. He is careful of the iv tube. "I'll always be here for you dear brother." He then snuggles Sans who cuddles against his body. "Always."
