Chapter nine:
Sans ducks behind a rock hearing angry shouting. He has heard it as he approached which made him wary. He peers out not dating to make the mistake of being spotted.
Not at a time like this.
If Frisk is angry enough she could still strike possibly.
He learned his lesson the hard way about being cautious in situations like this. He sees Frisk glaring at a Temmie who is wearing light blue and light purple stripped shirt. He spots Frisk looks ready to charge.
"You killed my brother!" Frisk growls at the Temmie who looks terrified. "You surprised him! He fell into the water." She is holding the Soul container securely.
Papyrus hurries over clearly having been a bit left behind as Frisk must have ran. "Frisk! Don't do something bad! It was all an accident! That Temmie didn't mean it!" He pleads though is suddenly having the Soul container shoved in his arms.
Frisk charges at the Temmie who tries to dodge. She lands on the ground and chases the Temmie. She doesn't seem to be in full reality.
The Temmie crosses an old tree bridge, of the last tree in this part of the underground that fell due to a rock slide, to run across some still water.
The tree bridge is a bit unstable and wobbly. It got abandoned for better bridges that were built.
Frisk is heading straight for it.
Papyrus notices his brother watching then sees him start to hurry towards Frisk. "Wait! Sans! Don't run ahead!" He knows Sans is closer to Frisk. Though he's scared what might happen as Frisk is angry. He doesn't want his brother to be hurt again.
Frisk scrambles onto the wood and tries to go across. She only gets half way before the whole thing shifts. She falls into the water and the Temmie, on safe land on the other side, looks back pausing hearing a splash.
Sans teleports onto the wood and crouches glancing around the water. He then spots Frisk and reaches down. He grabs her and pulls her out of the water. He can hear her cough as she is able to get air in again out of the water. He almost drops her as the wood shifts before it becomes steady. He sees his brother holding it for him.
The Soul container is nearby safe and sound.
Sans drags Frisk towards Papyrus.
The coldness of the water shocking Frisk and she just lets herself be dragged.
Sans gets her onto safe ground then lets go.
Papyrus hurries over to him and hugs him. "I told you not to run off ahead." He tells his brother who offers a smile to him.
"I couldn't let her drown." Sans points out snuggling close to his brother feeling secure.
Papyrus turns as Frisk sits up which he notices pleases the Temmie. He looks away as said Temmie dashes away in a hurry soon long gone. "At least you and Frisk seem to be okay." He adds glancing Fridk over to make sure. He also inspects his brother for any fresh wounds or anything. He is relieved to see neither of them have anything.
Frisk has gone quiet just staring at the bridge that almost drowned her. She breaks the silence only softly for a moment. "Maybe Temmies are unlucky and cause drownings." She sounds more like she just meant it for herself. She turns noticing the brothers watching her. "Sorry about that." She gets up and picks up the Soul container. "All I saw was red."
"We should get you to where we can get you dry. We don't want you to catch a cold." Papyrus points out and turns ready to go.
"I should return to Alphys." Sans sees the confused blinks. So he explains all that had happened since he last saw them. When he finishes he is hugged a little tightly by his brother.
"It's good things worked out for them. Just most importantly you're okay." Papyrus tells him as Sans hugs his brother back.
They stay there for a few moments before pulling apart from each other.
"You go do what you need to do." Papyrus tells his brother with a smile. "I'll make sure Frisk won't get sick."
Sans nods then heads off back to where he left Alphys. He spots the families gone with their loved ones, Alphys left looking for him. He approaches letting her spot him.
Alphys hurries over to him. "T-There you a-are!"
"Sorry. Heard the human Frisk and Papyrus. Went to check on them." Sans apologizes then sees Alphys blink at him. "Right. It was just out of that cameras reach if I remember right. The human is named Frisk. Her brother was killed down here. The drowning one. But she thought it was on purpose. So she was angry. I managed to get her to calm down and see her brothers soul again. Now she's staying at me and Papyruss place. Until me and you finish the machine to try to break the barrier."
"B-But how are w-we going to t-test it?" Alphas points out letting Sans think for a moment.
Sans almost frowns that he doesn't have an answer to that. He could guess though he can't be sure. "We'll figure it out. Or we might have to just trust our abilities. We'll run tests before we build it fully and see what works good. We'll work on getting it right along the way. Maybe it'll come to us as we work."
"O-Okay."
So the two head back to the lab to get back to work.
Frisk and Papyrus do make it to the brothers home.
Papyrus lets Frisk inside first then follows her. "I'll give you some of my spare clothes to wear." He grabs a spare blanket. "Remove the wet clothes and wrap yourself in this. It'll help. While I get the clothes." He gave her the blanket knowing he will have to come to her to give her the clothes. He lets Frisk take it then heads upstairs. "Shout to me when you're ready!" He calls over his shoulder as he makes it up the stairs. He gets to his room closing the door to give her privacy. He starts sorting through his clothes for something that'll fit her. He picks out his sky blue t-shirt, black sweat pants that can be tightened using strings.
"Okay." Frisk shouts out to Papyrus so the other heads over to her. She has all but her neck and head wrapped in the blanket.
Papyrus sets the clothes by her then leaves once more so she can have her privacy. He waits for her to call him back.
"I'm all set!" Frisk voice is heard so Papyrus heads on out. She looks a bit tiny in the borrowed clothes, the shirt is baggy and she has the strings to the pants pulled tight. Her feet hidden by the sweat pants legs that pool around her feet.
"At least you're dry now." Papyrus points out at least glad for that. "Do not worry though. I will wash and dry your clothes for you. So that way you'll have your fresh clothes to go to. So you'll be more comfortable in clothes that fit."
"Thank you." Frisk agrees to this offering a smile.
Hours later...
Sans and Alphys have managed to build a decent amount of the machine; the one planned to be used to destroy the barrier. They look over their work feeling a little confident about all of this.
"We might as well stop for now." Sans suggests looking to Alphys.
"N-No. We should k-keep working." Alphys shakes her head then moves to work further slightly worrying Sans.
"You don't want to work yourself to dust. No one would be happy about that." Sans puts an arm out stopping Alphys who turns to him.
"I swear t-that we are so c-close. W-We can get t-the monsters out of h-here. Frisk o-out of here." Alphas reminds Sans as the two stare at each other. "P-Please. L-Let us keep w-working. I feel l-like I owe it t-to the monsters f-for causing the m-melting. Even if i-it turned out o-okay in the end."
Sans sighs softly under his breath. "Alphys. I understand that you do have some lingering bad feelings. Just know that we will continue working tomorrow. Things could go really wrong if we work ourselves too much. What if we make a mistake that has bad consequences?"
Alphys finally sighs in defeat. "A-Alright. I s-suppose you have a-a point. We'll l-leave it until t-tomorrow."
Sans lets his arm go back to being at his side at hearing this. "That is good. See you tomorrow then."
"Y-Yeah." Alphys nods and walks with Sans to the door. As though to help show that she wont go back to work. "H-Have a good n-night."
"You too." Sans then sees her go for the way to her room. He turns around and leaves. He teleports once outside. He feels a bit better though not really ready to face a dog monster, when he is alone. He gets himself to end up right in the entry way.
Papyrus pokes his head out from the kitchen as though having sensed his brother. "Welcome home dear brother."
"Hey Paps. How'd everything go?" Sans greets.
"Oh wonderful. I think that Frisk is truly settling in." Papyrus smiles then glances back into the kitchen, as if something caught his eye. "Why don't you rest? I gotta finish cooking us food."
"Okay." Sans agrees and lets his brother duck back into the kitchen. He heads around to sit on the couch only to spot Frisks brothers soul.
It is placed in a spot between the couch and TV. Where it is less likely to be knocked down.
Sans turns wondering where Frisk went to. He heads upstairs and hears some crying coming from Papyruss room. He heads over opening the door just enough to peek inside.
Frisk is sitting on Papyruss bed curled up, arms around her knees, face buried in her arms, and is sobbing trying to keep quiet.
Sans wonders what could be wrong, and stays where he is to see if he can hear anything. Which he does end up getting some information.
"Even with his soul I still feel like in a way I lost my brother." Frisk sobs into her arms then gives a sniffle. "His soul is at least something. But I want him back. All of him." She continues in which Sans gazes at her with sympathy. "Why does fate have to be so cruel and have him die? Then remain as a soul? Life hates us it seems. I should have been the one to die."
"I don't think that." Sans walks in making sure she can hear him. He jumps as suddenly a knife is thrown at him, though misses hitting the door instead.
"Get out!" Frisk warns Sans glaring with tearful eyes. She has one leg down and one hand on the bed. Her other hand is in position to show that she threw the weapon.
Sans tries to brush off the knife throw and doesn't leave. He looks into her sad eyes. "Though your brother isn't the way he was before, he's still technically with you. Remember that. We can always build him a new robotic body. Just as soon as we get the barrier open we'll be good to go." He doesn't get another word in as Frisk growls.
"I told you to leave me alone." Frisk jumps off the bed and lunges at him. She pushes him back throwing him to the ground.
Sans closes his eyes bracing for impact. He looks up to see Frisk standing over him. His vision flashing to show a familiar place with Dogermy glaring at him, instead of Frisk. He shuts his eye tightly hearing a muffled sound, as he can hear the dog growls in his head. He is suddenly pulled into an embrace causing his eye to open. He finds himself back at home and he spots his brothers leg. He turns seeing a very worried Papyrus is holding him close. His head on his brothers chest. He then turns and sees a stunned teary eyed Frisk standing there staring. He turns back to his brother when the other speaks.
"Sans? Sans are you okay? What happened?"
Sans can tell that his brother is clearly very worried. "I'm okay." He tells his brother. "I just gave myself a scare."
"Memories?" Papyrus asks in which Sans nods, though they do notice Frisk is a little surprised. "It's okay brother." He looks at Frisk with a questioning look.
"I want to be alone." Frisk turns shutting the door.
Papyrus feels his worry stack as now he is worried about both Sans and Frisk. He decides to start with Sans to give Frisk a little room. He can check on her in a little bit. He looks to his brother who also looks worried. "Why don't we go downstairs and talk?" He suggests in which Sans nods his head. He smiles a little at the slightly adorable squeak his brother makes when picked up. "Fear not brother. I shall carry you safely there." He informs Sans who smiles a little with a soft chuckle.
"I know you will bro."
Papyrus does indeed safely carry Sans to where the couch. He gently places his brother down on the couch in a sitting position. He moves Frisks brothers soul to the kitchen. "Everything is alright. You think about what we should make for dessert. You are a special guest here so why don't you pick it out? Choose whatever you think we should have." He suggests to keep the soul busy. He then heads back to the couch and sits next to him and looks to him.
"About what happened. I didn't want to upset Frisk further. She is having a little trouble with the fact her brother died, and is now in a tube." Sans explains as Papyrus listens to what he has to say. "She thought she should have been the one to die. Not her brother. And that the universe hates them. I tried to step in to help. She didn't want the help." He then notices his brothers worried look as he gets checked over by him. "She didn't hurt me. She probably felt backed into a corner and didn't want me there. It was just a push. Nothing serious." He assures Papyrus who then relaxes a little.
"Still. She shouldn't have pushed you." Papyrus informs Sans clearly worried about it all. He turns to look to where the bedroom is. "You we're just trying to help. And be there when she needed you." His head tilts down so he is now staring at the floor. "Things could have gone so much worse. I'm just glad that it didn't go too far."
"I don't blame her for the push." Sans reminds Papyrus. "We really should give her space for a little bit. We can check on her after that."
Papyrus nods his head then gets up. "I should check on the soul." He suggests then blinks. "Are you going to be okay here? Alone?"
Sans nods his head in confirmation. "Yeah. I'll be okay." He assures the other who nods then goes to the kitchen. He turns to look to the bedroom. He has a feeling that the sooner they can get the barrier broken, as well as build robot bodies for the souls, the better. He isn't sure how much Frisk can take seeing her beloved brother as only a soul. He closes his eyes letting out a breath.
Only time will tell if they make it before something happens.
