My Little Arrival
Ch.8: A Faint Glow
As most creatures fell into their cocoons that night, one within their bed could not sleep. As much as she tossed and turned, sleep did not come for her. She frowned deeply, looking across the room. Sombra appeared to be resting soundly.
To me, one of the most intriguing subjects is the why. Why someone chooses to become a villain. Or even the debate on if they are bad. In certain aspects, the DC Character Poison Ivy can be looked at with sympathy. For most ponies and creatures of Equestria, there was no such sympathy for Cozy Glow. She was a part of the trio that had nearly conquered Equestria. And when the truth would be discovered on why Blueblood, among others, had perished, guilty by association would be the words hung around her neck, though she had nothing to do with it.
Cozy looked to see a picture, her eyes welling with tears. In the picture was a pink mare and a blue stallion, in great joy as they held their amused 3-year-old daughter for a family photo. Her parents, Prairie Sunrise, and Ocean Twilight had been so great to her. She could remember clear as day how great they were. So caring, compassionate, understanding. Then came the fire.
Death was something Cozy had understood from an early age. Some Ponies left and didn't return. Still, it broke and shattered her soul as Princess Celestia informed her of the heartbreaking news. There was new light, as least a little, in her new guardian Sunburst. A dear friend of Starlight Glimmer and a genius in his own right, he saw even then how gifted Cozy was. So, when she became six, she was enrolled in Starlight's school. And was ignored.
I remain conflicted on Starlight's decision to let Cozy go her own way. As a former villain herself, she had to know that as Cozy saw the power nobles wielded and the Alicorns shared, that Cozy would wish to explore that path. It was in that search that Cozy would surmise the same problem Starlight at one time had believed to be true- Magic was unfair. It caused too many problems, and Equestria would be better off without it.
Even as she found Tirek and Chrysless after her defeat at the hands of Equestria's Student Six, she remained conflicted, having seen that Equestria disagreed with her. Then again, Princess Celestia held at one time rejection the notion of Stallions being blessed with the right to vote. And the political process seemed to step over ponies without money and influence.
Defeat came for Cozy a second time and came hard. This time, there was no prison, but stone. She was terrified that the kind and seemingly incredible Princess Celestia would agree to this. She was a child!
And recently, when the one Tirek called Savior released them, she thought of running off. There came a sad truth in it, however. Who would want her? The Cutie Mark Crusaders would not want friendship with her. Sunburst would reject her. Not even Twilight, the Princess of Friendship would want anything to do with her. She felt so...alone that there was no path for her but to follow the others.
Cozy smiled, thinking of Sunburst as she laid back down. Initially on the list for death, she had convinced Tirek and Chrysless to not kill him. He had done nothing wrong and was harmless. Secretly, Cozy had a different reason for wishing him to be spared. She never forgot those who were good to her. That cared about her.
In that she found Sombra. The unicorn who had a barrier of mystery around him, she took note earlier that night at the glare Sombra had given to Tirek's vicinity. Sombra hated him deeply.
For Cozy though, a dark truth permeated her, and cut her like a knife. Even as a gifted unicorn, she held no gifts that could challenge the two leaders of their group. One day, the inevitable would come. They would kill her.
Cozy smiled sadly, making a resolution. Yes, she believed in taking the star. But Equestria was not her enemy. At least, she didn't want them to be. She was tired of the fighting. Couldn't they all get along?
"I have to try" she whispered. "I must try to make Tirek and Chrysless see the light. If I can't, then what more do I have to lose?"
