My Little Arrival
Ch.12: Breaking Bread
As I showered shortly after waking up the next morning, I thought of my families' traditions. There were plenty. Opening one present on Christmas Eve, a BBQ on the 4th of July, and going to Traverse City for school shopping the first week of August were some of my favorites. Undoubtedly my favorite, however, was Saturday breakfast. Of course, this time would be different.
I walked downstairs, my mouth watering as the smells permeated around me. French Toast, Eggs, and Bacon was being made. I would find out much later that Fluttershy had been asked by my mom if meat bothered her. She had hesitated, but ultimately said no. Like Earth, some ponies chose to abstain while others ate meat in their breaking bread.
Luna and Celestia had arrived by this time, and looked in the window, chuckling at me. My hair looked like a mess. I grumbled, raising an eyebrow as Rarity pulled a hairbrush from her purse and offered to straighten it. I shook my head. That day, I learned one of the rules of Rarity: When she gives you fashion and hygiene advice, you listen. My hair was combed not long after.
Soon, we had gathered around the table. There was a noted absence in Kayla. Kayla worked morning shifts on Saturdays at the local Big Buys as a dishwasher, and no doubt she was already knee deep in pans.
While we ate, AJ, as I came to endearingly call her, looked at me with a curious eye. Noticing, I took a sip of coffee, and spoke.
"Something up, Applejack?"
She put down her fork and tilted her head. "Dat girl dat came over, Kayla. Yall seem mighty close."
Mom chuckled. "That's what his teachers say too."
"Anyways" AJ smiled. "Call it a hunch, but ah got a feeling yah like her."
Now, imagine for a moment having a fear of public speaking. Nevertheless, you walk up to the podium, adjusting your tie. You swallow, nervous, surrounded by people waiting with bated breath. You start to feel dizzy, scared. Sweat proceeds to drip down your head, the flashes of lightbulbs taking note of your heightened anxiety.
That was me in that moment.
Rainbow grinned, leaning forward in her chair. "You got a crush on her."
I silently took another sip of coffee, letting the statement float in the air. Nothing more needed to be said. Outside, the Princess of the Night noticed. She knew a thing about love and made a resolution.
It was time for a heart to heart.
