My Little Arrival

Ch.14: Our Love

It was quiet now. The walk was silent as Kayla, and I walked upstairs. My mind turned to a memory, the path to the room seeming as long as a journey through a desert.

It was when Kayla got invited to our families Christmas Party last year. Now when I say Christmas Party, dear viewer, I mean it. Family from all over showed up, and it was always a fun time filled with laughter. My Aunt Melody, who works with Special Ed students, raised an eyebrow with an amused grin as she saw our car pull up. She was sitting at my Great-Grandma Imogene's table looking out the window.

"I've never seen that girl before" she had murmured. Grandma raised her head up from the table, seeing the blonde-haired girl she met a few times. Long story short, Kayla had been well welcomed into the family. She shared my Aunt Becky's politics, My Uncle Jacks love of hunting, and my cousin Emily's love of community.

I was snapped out of memory lane by an assuring squeeze of the hand from Kayla. This was like the call from an angel to one having a crisis of faith.

She was ready to hear my confession.

In my room, even now, sits two white beanbag chairs. Kayla had bought them for me as a birthday present a few years prior. We sat in them. I stretched my feet out, taking a deep breath. "Kayla... no matter what..we're friends right?"

Raising an eyebrow, Kayla nodded. "Of course!" She then surprised me by standing up, and placing her beanbag chair in front of me, staring me in my eyes, then sitting down. "Release your water" she smiled. This is what I call a Kaylaism, which meant "Get your feelings out."

It came out like a stream of consciousness. I talked like I was an auctioneer. "Kayla. I really like you. I have for a while. I can't stop thinking about you. But I don't want this to hurt us."

Kayla then did the unexpected and pulled me into a kiss. I could only smile and accepted it. For what appeared to be minutes, we kissed. Finally releasing, Kayla chuckled, our hands still attached.

"Remember that Christmas Party last year? When your cousin Emily had you play Wii Sports with her?"

I nodded, smiling amused at the memory. "I do. For a dancer, she didn't do that well."

Kayla nodded. "Well... when you were doing that, I asked your grandma for her blessing to be with you. I've liked you for so long, David. I just got one question."

"What's that?" I asked.

"How long do you think your parents have been listening?"

I burst out laughing, then hearing laughing outside. Oh yes, I had an angel in my arms. One that was willing to enter the dark mountains with me anytime.

Even if those dark mountains meant an encounter with an enemy.
