An art trade story for Taleea on Deviantart, who did a beautiful picture of Balan and Emma for me. :)
Undertale belongs to Toby Fox. Gen belongs to Taleea.
A/N: This story takes place during Taleea's current Undertale Comic called "Mendertale". You should check it out. It's really good. :)
Hope Revived In Us
He clutched the precious shard that the young woman in front of him so trustingly gave to him, the weight of the situation hitting him. If this worked, they'd both be free. If it didn't, then the guilt of her death would be on him forever.
There had been enough death, so much that the thought gave Gaster a bad taste in his mouth. No, he thought to himself. I'm not going to let this young woman die. She is needed in this world.
He recalled their conversation they just had before she gave him the shining shard. It was so beautiful and a piece of her, a piece that was allowing her to see much more than most humans could. The young woman that refused to give up, so much like young Frisk.
Gaster actually let a smile come to his face, chuckling a little. While determination wasn't Gen's main trait, he could definitely see that it was part of her, especially where she was determined that they were going to get out of the Void. He had almost given up hope of ever leaving the place, but she didn't let him.
There had been a very small bit of hope in him to ever be reunited with his sons and to feel the sun and be truly free of the prison they had called home for so many years. If this does work, this young lady will be a hero just like our Frisk, he thought to himself. He looked at the shard again. It has to work. For both our sakes.
Gen looked up at the skeleton she had bonded with in such a short time, though it seemed like much longer. She could see that he was deep in thought while hoping their plan to get out would work. I can't imagine being away from loved ones for so long, she thought to herself. This will work. I just know it will. He deserves to be reunited with his sons. I'm sure they miss him as much as he misses them.
She took a deep breath, letting it out and gazing at the shard she had entrusted to Gaster. She felt no fear in using it to get out of the Void and she fully trusted the scientist, though he had had reservations, expressing concern for her, but she had already decided if there was a chance for her to get out of here, then he should have the same chance.
She saw him gaze down at her, his eyes beginning to glow as his magic started to gather. "My dear...," he began, but trailed off.
Gen smiled. "Don't think about it," she said gently. "Just do it. I trust you and I believe in you."
He jolted, looking at her in shock. "You...You really are so much like Frisk," he said, a smile coming to his face. "You don't let the maybes hold you down. You let them inspire you to give it your all."
She smiled again. "And you should do the same, Doctor," she said. "Don't think about the maybes. I know this will work."
He sighed and nodded. "I want you to hold on tight to me," he said. "I will do the same for you."
She nodded, knowing it was so that they would not get separated by accident. "Have hope, Doctor," she said. "You can't lose that. It's too important."
He nodded again before chuckling. "It's funny," he said. "Here I am, a monster who has lived many years and I'm getting a pep talk from someone who hasn't lived as long as I have, but is wise beyond her years and doesn't let anything hold her back."
Gen smiled. "Thank you for the compliment," she said.
"Thank you for reminding me not to lose hope," he replied as his magic began gathering more to him.
She gently placed a hand on his shoulder. "Don't gather it so fast," she cautioned.
He nodded. "As much as I am eager for us to get out of here, I do want both of us to make it in one piece," he said. "And that's the bare bones of it."
Her mouth twitched in a smile, making him smile too as his magic continued to gather. "Not much longer now," he said before hugging her. "I truly am grateful to you, my dear. I don't know how I'll ever repay you for this."
"Just enjoy life and your family," she said.
He nodded before looking at the shard, clutching it tightly. "If this does work, we'll find a way to fix your soul," he said. "You have my promise."
She nodded. "Until then, I trust its safekeeping to you."
To hear that someone was trusting him with a piece of themselves and wanting them to keep it safe not only gave Gaster a confidence boost, but also made the small hope in him revive. "I will guard it with my life," he promised her.
That made hope surge into Gen and she saw his magic reach its peak. "Alright, this is it," the skeleton said, holding her close to him.
She gripped his coat, holding on tight. "Close your eyes, my dear," he said gently. "And please don't lose hope."
She nodded. "I fully trust you," she said.
Gaster took a deep breath and his magic swirled along with the magic in the shard. The quiet was now filled with the buzz of magic as he held the young woman close, afraid to lose her, but hoping this would work.
It must work, he said to himself. We've come too far for this to fail.
Gen felt the magic around her. We're going to get out of here, she thought to herself. Sans and Papyrus are going to be shocked, as is everyone else. Gaster will be free at last to enjoy the sun and the surface with his family. And I will enjoy every moment of my life still, even if I'm missing a piece of myself inside. It will not change me.
The buzz grew stronger as it surrounded them. Please have this work. Please have us both make it, Gaster begged in his mind, holding on tight to the hope in him and not letting go.
He gazed down at Gen, who looked so peaceful. She's an angel, just like Frisk. An angel of hope, reviving hope inside of me. While I don't know what made her decide to communicate with me in the first place, I'm so grateful she did and glad she wasn't scared off.
He then felt the pull of the magic and while it wasn't painful, it wasn't comfortable either. The poor skeleton felt like he was being turned every which way while tightening his hold on the young woman in his arms, though he seemed to lose feeling for a short moment, startling him, but then he felt her grip his jacket, which filled him with relief that she was still with him.
They were being pulled in a direction he could only guess what an 'opening' from the Void to the real world and for a few moments, all was quiet before his hearing returned and he and Gen were on the ground, both a bit weak, but still breathing.
We made it? He asked himself and felt his hope surging when he heard the familiar voices of his sons. He felt a hand touch his and he knew it was Gen.
The young woman smiled herself as she stayed still. I knew we'd make it, she thought to herself as she heard familiar voices too.
Now it was time for a long overdue reunion.
I was trying not to give away too much from the comic, so I hope I did okay. :)
