Silver Strings sat in front of her mother's grave, with a small bouquet of roses in her grasp.
"Hey, mom..." Silver uttered. "Happy Birthday..." She gently placed the bouquet in front of the grave, then sat in silence for a moment.
"Five long years..." Silver thought. "Five years today since you passed away. Five long years of pain... Almost five years since I've given up on the violin..."
Silver never remembered much about her mother since she was so young when she died. She couldn't really remember her face very well, only the staining image of her mother's death.
Silver then heard a sound from a small distance away from her, causing her mind to grow curious. She got herself up and walked in the direction of the sound.
She passed the blooming cherry tree, the blossoms flowing through the air. Silver felt as if each step she took, was slow as the world moved around her.
She peeked over the cherry tree, finding a male pony who looked to be somewhere around her age. He had a white coat and a slightly spiked blue mane. His eyes were closed as Silver Strings found him playing a small portable instrument for some young fillies, stomping, and dancing along with the music.
Silver Strings stood amazed at this colt, as he was playing this small instrument the way he was, causing her to smile and let out a soft chuckle. The colt noticed this, opening his eyes, revealing a light blue color that sparkled in the daylight.
The young colt stopped playing and stared at Silver Strings, studying her closely, then his eyes lit up with excitement. Silver looked at him with confusion.
"I know you!" he said with a smooth voice. "You're Silver Strings, one of the youngest fillies to perform with an orchestra!"
"You still remember that...?" Silver asked slightly surprised since it felt like such a long time ago.
"Of course I do, that's what inspired me to do music!" the colt walked up to her with a bright friendly smile on his face. "I'm Octave Jump." he said, holding out his hoof.
Silver Strings stared at his hoof for a moment, then shook it slowly. There was a loud gong from the clock tower, grabbing Octave's attention.
"Oh, I should get going now, I have a performance to take part of," he said turning around but stopped when a thought occurred to himself. "You should come see me perform." Silver Strings stared at the ground.
"I think I'll pass, thanks for the offer though," she said, but then felt something grabbing her hoof, pulling her along.
Silver looked up, finding Octave Jump pulling her forward, insisting to come along. She watched as she was dragged along towards the concert hall.
"It'll be fun!" Octave said with a soft chuckle as his eyes sparkled.
Silver tried to stop herself from following, but she felt something inside of her telling her to go with him.
Silver Strings followed Octave Jump more willingly, deciding to go ahead and see the performance. Feeling slightly awkward, she decided to try to start up a conversation.
"So, when does it start?" Silver asked.
"It start's at about 3:30, but the doors have been open since 3:00." Octave said.
"Are you sure we'll make it in time? It's already 3:20..."
"Nah, it's cool, I'm the fourth one on anyway, so we got time."
"You sure you aren't cutting it close?"
"We'll be fine."
Silver Strings stared at the orchestra hall, watching it grow closer and closer. It had been a long time since she had been there last.
They were able to make it through the doors just in time. Silver noticed her friends, Lyra and Sweetie Drops standing next to the auditorium, Lyra levitating a program with her horn. They noticed Silver as she came in.
"Hey, Silver! Haven't seen you here in a while." Lyra said walking up to her friend.
"Come to enjoy a show?" Sweetie Drops said with a smile.
Silver Strings rubbed her neck slightly. "You could say that I guess..." she said.
"Well, I better get onstage. I'll see you guys later!" Octave said, walking backstage.
Silver Strings waved him off, then let out a cry of pain, finding Sweetie Drops poking her in the side. Silver just stared at her in confusion and slight annoyance for the pain in her side.
"Well, spill!" she exclaimed. Silver still looked confused. "You know, that colt! You were totally falling for him."
Silver's face turned bright red. "What, no!" she said quickly. "I just barely met him today, he's just a fanboy from when I was little, that's all."
"Sure..." Lyra said, with a joking smile on her face. The two ponies let out a chuckle as they walked over to the auditorium doors to take their seats. Silver followed, but stopped, turning to stare at the other ponies around her, memories from her last visit here popping into her head. Her ears started to ring slightly, as her panic grew.
"Hey, you okay, Silver?" Sweetie Drops asked. Silver shook her head.
"Yeah, I'm fine... just... tired. Come on, let's go," she said walking toward the door. She could feel her hooves shake slightly. Silver opened the door, finding the room looking the same as it did five years ago. The memory of how it felt played through her mind. "The dryness of the air... the sent of dust..." Silver thought as her friends took a seat. She followed, ignoring the whispers from the other ponies, having trouble believing that it was the same filly from five years ago.
"That filly looks familiar..."
Isn't that Silver Strings?"
"The youngest filly to perform with an orchestra."
"She sure seems taller now..."
"I haven't seen her perform in years, do you think she quit?"
Silver let out a sigh as she sat down next to her friends, ignoring the comments.
Thoughts would scatter through Silver's mind as she listened to each performer.
Octave Jump panted hard, catching his breath from playing. He noticed a bright light beaming off of his flank. He turned, finding an image of a treble clef with a music staff on his flank.
"Could it be...?" he thought. He put his hoof to his flank, rubbing the image. A big smile grew on his face. "My cutie mark!"
Suddenly, applaud filled the room, grabbing his attention. His smile grew more as he got off of the seat to take a bow.
Silver Strings stood in front of Octave Jump, still shocked at what she just saw.
(Hang out)
"Please? I need the practice, it's not like your performing with an orchestra!" Octave exclaimed.
Silver let out a soft gasp, causing her to drop her bow.
"Silver?"
"I... I can't play anymore..."
