A/N: First song up is, 'Someone To Love,' by Joe B and Babyface.
Enjoy!
Rin had been lost to him. The little girl who had followed him for the better part of a year was dead because of him. Why hadn't he taken her to a human village and left her there?
Closing his eyes tightly as if to shield himself from the pain did no good. He held her lifeless body in his arms as he knelt in the field of tall grass and wildflowers where only a short time ago she had been standing beside Jaken and Kohaku waiting for his order.
Gritting his teeth he could hear her asking him when they arrived if she could pick flowers. He had denied her that request and told her to be still. She had obeyed with a smile.
Always smiling the little human seemed to reserve her biggest and brightest beams for him. Willing his eyes to open he forced himself to look down at her seeing nothing but blank serenity gracing her features.
He had his sword, its full ability but it meant nothing. It was hollow, empty…what good was a sword if he had no one to protect it with. Rin had been the person his father had told him about, she had been his to protect and he had failed miserably.
"Sesshomaru?" Hearing the timid voice of Kagome he didn't spare her a glance. Why was she there? Scenting the air he picked up no trace of Inuyasha grateful he could be left alone and not have to put on heirs.
Silently he held Rin to him just wanting a little more time, just a bit more with her. "Are you okay?"
"Leave." He said his voice strained. Hearing the clear indication of pain Kagome walked closer to him her form causing a 'swishing' noise as she made her way to him.
"I can help you if you're hurt." She offered softly. Her spiritual energy washed over him in calming waves, she was soothing him in a way. Normally he would accuse her of trying to suppress his demonic energy to placate him but now it broke him.
"No one can help me." He whispered. "I failed her." Edging closer Kagome came around to his front gasping when she saw Rin in his arms.
"Rin." Kneeing down she shed her large yellow sack and quiver of arrows to lay beside her. "What happened?"
"Her soul was taken to the underworld. This is my fault. She died because of me." Sesshomaru replied closing his eyes again tightly.
"So bring her back with Tensaiga." Kagome stated.
"I did, once. Tensaiga only works once." He managed out.
"Oh." Hearing her voice crack he opened his lids to see Kagome with tears in her eyes. Placing her hand on Rins forehead she sniffled. "Oh Rin."
Taking her in as she mourned as well he steadied his breath. He could feel her heart breaking for Rin just as his was. Why was she out here alone?
"Where is Inuyasha and the rest of your group?" He questioned. Looking up at him and locking his gaze she sighed.
"I don't know. We were separated. I can't find them." Kagome squeaked out her voice thick. Silence ensued as they sat with Rin both saying their goodbyes in their own way.
"Kagome, may I request something of you?"
"What is it?"
"Would you make a flower crown for Rin before I…I have to…" Feeling a soft warm hand against his his vision wavered as tears formed in his own eyes.
Her small smile etched onto his heart the same way that Rins had the first time she had graced him with her toothy grin. Taking her hand he wrapped his fingers around hers.
"Of course. I'm here. You don't have to do this alone."
"Thank you." Sesshomaru felt his tears spill down his face despite his best efforts not to let them, they just came. Kagome squeezed his hand hard and it was in that moment that he knew she was someone to protect.
