Konoha. Tsunade's office. 4 days later.
Shikamaru, Sakura and Sai were standing in front of their Hokage, with their heads bowed and their hands behind their backs. They had just returned from a mission that had lasted almost a month and a half. But they didn't find Naruto or Sasuke. The three countries had been searched from top to bottom. There had been no discoveries, no traces. Both men had disappeared without a trace. Shizune stood behind her friend, ready to intervene if Tsunade decided to smash her desk again. Strangely enough, she had not yelled or even tried to punch her desk. Her assistant was a little concerned about this. The Hokage was not known for his calm disposition. Shizune wondered if Tsunade was in shock. The blonde woman quietly rose from her chair five minutes after the three shinobi arrived. Next, she walked toward the window, which provided a stunning view of Hokage Mountain. It took her a while before she spoke after hearing her sigh.
"Get some rest, you three. I want your written report before lunchtime tomorrow. Thanks for your hard work."
They were surprised by the calm, almost intonation-free voice. Although Sakura wanted to speak with her sensei, Sai took her hand and shook her head. After greeting their leader, the three ninjas disappeared in a cloud of smoke. Tsunade sat down and closed her eyes. Now what would she do? She had been pestered nearly every day by the Council to find the nukenin. There was nothing left for her to give them as an excuse, her best trio had not found anything. In a second outing with his pack of Ninken, Kakashi lost track for the second time south of Shimo no Kuni. The ninja copycat returned empty-handed in the middle of the night the previous night. Kakashi had told her the news in the middle of the night.
Shizune had to get a man to fix the door Tsunade had destroyed out of rage. She wasn't sure what to do now. Having lost track of both Sasuke and Naruto, Tsunade had no other choice but to inform the Council. As a result, Tsunade felt bad for putting her trust in Naruto. This was especially true when it came to Sasuke. When it came to the heir, Naruto never acted logically. As Tsunade opened her eyes, she saw the same concern in her friend's black marbles.
"Honestly, Shizune what can I do? I have no choice but to inform the Council that I have lost two ninjas. And not just any two! No, the two who could destroy the shinobi world."
The Hokage's voice was tired, she had no idea what to do. Her heart ached for the blond boy, whom she had loved like a child. Her heart would not be spared in the end. The jinchuriki had not considered the consequences of his actions on Tsunade and Konoha. According to Kakashi, the two men are in love with each other. This makes sense when put into context. As far as Naruto was concerned, Sasuke had always been a part of him; it was almost visceral. It was as if he had always known the jet-haired man would be an important figure in his life. Tsunade had no idea what Sasuke was thinking.
She had never been around him before. Yet from what people said about him, he was the opposite of Naruto. As much as she tried, Tsunade couldn't put herself in the shoes of her blond friend. The blonde loved Dan with all her heart, but she wasn't sure if she would have been as dedicated as Naruto. In both his actions and feelings, Naruto was an extreme individual. Sasuke was no exception. The day was nearing its end. As usual, Tsunade would receive a visit from Danzo. Bile rose up in her throat. Tsunade disliked this man. Besides the treachery, everything he said sounded false. Even though she did not have any proof for her claims, it was her feeling. After he joined Team 7, Tsunade tried to discuss this issue with Sai. The artist then showed her the seal he placed on his tongue, "zekka kokzentsu no in". That had reinforced his mistrust of the man. ANBU Roots have this seal placed on all their members, according to Sai.
"The two of us should take a break, eat something, and change our surroundings. It will be good for us both."
The assistant always had brilliant ideas, and the last one was the best. Tsunade realized she was starving.
"Let's go, I'm hungry."
Both friends hurried for the exit. Their goal was not to be intercepted before they reached their restaurant. As soon as Tsunade emerged from the Tower, she took a deep breath and closed her eyes. Enjoying the last hours of daylight, she closed her eyes. She realized then how exhausted and hungry she was. Shizune lightly stroked her shoulder. Tsunade opened her eyes and smiled. Tsunade loved the onigiri at the modest restaurant they reached not far from their workplace. They quickly ordered and settled in.
"Tsunade, we can all just tell the Council that Naruto is having problems with Sas..."
"No."
Her friend was interrupted by Tsunade.
"Naruto wouldn't want to add another offense to the list of crimes Konoha already accuses the Uchiha of."
As the black-haired woman placed her cup of tea on the table, she sighed heavily through her nose.
"Tsunade, I know how much you love Naruto, but you seem to be overdoing it. Damn it, you're the Hokage. You can't keep protecting him from himself."
Shizune had not raised her voice, in fact, she had lowered it, but her words hit her hard. The truth in that sentence was like a slap in the face. She lowered her head to her plate and pushed it away, no longer hungry. Her friend and assistant opened her eyes once again to put her back on track. Tsunade did not want to put the blonde in a difficult position and lose his affection. At the same time, it was Naruto who had opened the door when he took a "vacation" with a nukenin. Nagato should learn to think before he acts, and unfortunately, this is a hard lesson to learn. As Tsunade regarded her assistant, she nodded.
"I'll tell the Council about Naruto and Sasuke disappearing."
The Hokage had no choice but to utter these words, which left a bad taste in her mouth. The rope was broken because Naruto pulled too long on it. Hopefully, the Council would not have any more luck finding the duo than she did. They would return on their own shortly. Tsunade laughed to herself. Before returning to the village, the jinchuriki would take until the last day she had given him. Shizune arose to pay, and Tsunade followed her, and they returned to the office a little heavier than before.
After returning to the office of the Hokage, the door opened abruptly. Danzo entered the room without knocking. Tunada rolled her eyes. She disliked talking with this man. Nevertheless, he was allowed to do what he wanted by Homura and Koharu.
"Tsunade-Sama."
She could feel the contempt in his voice even when he used her honorific. She did not care, however, since it was reciprocated when she spoke to him.
"Danzo."
They stared at each other for a moment in silence, neither wanting to look down at the other. No matter what, Tsunade hated losing, so she held on. Eventually, the man lowered his gaze. Secretly happy about her victory, Tsunade smiled discreetly.
"Is there anything you would like, Danzo?"
With a teasing tone in her voice, she asked her question.
"You already know why I am here. If Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha are not together, it seems the Uzumaki have not been able to convince Sasuke to return to Konoha. Perhaps our jinchûriki lied when he said he succeeded."
The Hokage smashed her palm against the desk as she jumped to his feet. The desk made a sound of protest, but it did not break.
"Naruto told us he succeeded, and he did! That kid cannot lie."
She thought, "Unlike some people.".
Despite her outburst of emotion, the man in front of her just raised an eyebrow.
"Where is he?"
It was hard for her to tell him that she did not know. Tsunade knew she didn't really have a choice at this point.
"I don't know."
Danzo's expressionless face reddened, his mouth opened and then closed, and he opened it again.
"You don't know where the Konoha jinchûriki and the nukenin are?"
If the situation had not been so serious, Tsunade would have laughed at the man's expression. It was unusual to see Danzo lose his cool. Crossing her arms over her imposing chest, she lifted her chin a little.
"I lost track of him a few weeks ago."
"A few weeks?"
Danzo's voice had gotten dangerously low. The Hokage noticed Danzo's right fist was closed and trembling. At that moment, she suspected he was trying to make her disappear. Tsunade sat back in her chair before taking out some scrolls and starting to write. He stared at her hard before continuing to speak.
"Go ahead. I want the transcripts of the ninja missions that searched for them. I dare to imagine that you sent at least one team."
Rather than answering right away, Tsunade took a moment to complete the sentence she was writing. She then turned to her assistant.
"Shizune, would you please get the documents to Danzo?"
Her colleague nodded and went to the next room. Several minutes later, she returned with four scrolls. The man accepted them without hesitation. Danzo left the office without saying anything, and he did not bother to close the door behind him.
"Does he have a chance of finding Naruto?"
Shizune's voice did not hide her concern. If Danzo found them first, she knew nothing good would come of it.
"I don't think so. We had three of our best ninjas, and they weren't able to do it. No, I'm not too worried."
Tsunade got up from her desk and walked back to her window.
"Hopefully Naruto and Sasuke will be back soon. Naruto has a week and a half left of his vacation. He'll be here in time; Naruto knows he has to be back by the deadline."
While watching Mount Hokage, the two women remained in silence. In their minds, they both hoped that the blond man would respect the time limit. It would be more convenient to play with the cards in hand when he returns. Still, Tsunade needed to make sure her little sunshine wasn't harmed. It is true that she was perhaps too attached to him, but Tsunade was unable to help it. Tsunade promised to sit down and talk to Sasuke. Tsunade had to make sure Sasuke didn't play with her adopted son. It was unfortunately a possibility she had to consider. Sasuke would need to prove his worth to her before she would let him stay with Naruto, and if he wants her forgiveness and to return to Konoha. Even if he doesn't talk to her afterwards. She was willing to take the risk. Naruto's good heart could not be exploited by anyone. Tsunade would not allow it; he would have to get over his body. Uchiha or no Uchiha.
Akatsuki's hideout. Six days after Orochimaru's arrival
The exhausted Orochimaru had tired of walking around in circles and wasting valuable time. He was particularly annoyed by the twins. They had convinced Kisame to fight every day. He had replied that it would "kill time". Additionally, Itachi was always watching him from a distance. If Uchiha wasn't around, Kisame did the same thing. He returned to the desk where he had been allowed to work on a new jutsu. A jutsu that could bypass Uchiha's visual attack. He was trapped here, so he was not able to "test" his jutsu on the guinea pigs, and it wasn't going as well as he had hoped.
As he sighed irritably, he realized he was going in circles. As the sanin was about to toss a glass jar filled with a useless mixture, the door opened. In a hurry to find out if he was finally going to be able to capture the Kyûbi, he advanced towards the entrance. In addition, his body began to deteriorate faster than expected. Sasuke's body was necessary for Orochimaru to live. Pein did not appear, which irritated him, but Orochimaru approached. He approached to see who had been captured. On Kakuzu's left shoulder was the body of a blonde woman, which was placed without delicacy. As the nukenin walked to the center of the room, he dropped the woman to the ground. There was no reaction from her.
The snake-man wondered if she was already dead but noticed that her chest was heaving slightly. He turned his attention to the two men who had just returned. Hidan was speaking of his God, how dissatisfied he had been. The jinchûriki had to be alive to extract the biju, so he was unable to complete his ritual. The sanin put this information aside for later, when he must capture the kyûbi and its host. However, this would complicate matters greatly. As Orochimaru returned to his office, the door opened again. However, Pein returned to the cave emptyhanded. The ninja was in a foul mood, which was felt throughout the cave. His anger was practically vibrating the air. The nukenin did not move or make a sound. Instead, they waited for their leader to speak. Pein spoke to the group after fifteen minutes of silence.
"Hidan, Kakuzu. I see you have captured Matatabi Nibi no Bakeneko. Congratulations!"
Taking a moment to look at each person before continuing, he paused for a moment
"Tobi and Deidara, where are they?"
Konan answered the question. Orochimaru had only met her once. Most of the time, she stayed in the back of their lair.
"He told me he was on his way. He managed to capture Isobu Sanbi no Kyodaigame."
Before turning to Orochimaru, the man simply nodded.
"You will leave early tomorrow to pick up the Kyûbi for me."
"I can... "
The snake tried to speak
"Do not interrupt me! Tomorrow you will get the Kyûbi back for me. But you will not go alone. Itachi and Kisame will accompany you. And in return, your bodyguard will stay here with us."
The sanin shrugged, not needing the twins anymore, he could do whatever he wanted with them. Itachi, on the other hand, could end up being a problem if he ever attempts to take over Sasuke. It was clear to Orochimaru that his time was running out, his body would soon abandon him.
"Is it a good idea to ask Itachi to accompany us?"
"Snake, you're here, still alive because you're able to track down the Nine-Tailed Fox jinchûriki easily. Don't forget that."
Turning away from them, he said.
"Place the jinchûriki near the statue of the heresiarch demon. Once Deidara arrives, we will begin the extraction. This time the extraction will take more than three days since Itachi and Kisame will be heading for the fox."
After making this statement, he left the group and went to join Konan in the back room. The others continued their activities. Meanwhile, Hidan and Kakuzu brought their prey to the statue. Orochimaru was impressed. He would love to possess it, maybe after he possessed the kyûbi he would be powerful enough to defeat the Akatsuki members and take the statue. That's exactly what he would do, he could easily get rid of Kisame and Itachi. He possessed more than one jutsu. He would wait until they had captured the Kyûbi and killed Sasuke tomorrow morning. He would then strike, and the other two men would not see it coming. He chuckled softly, knowing full well his plan would succeed. Itachi would not cause him any surprise. Kisame, he didn't know very well, and the fights between the twins had only shown him the basics of his jutsu. He returned to his jutsu, anyway, he wouldn't sleep tonight. There was too much to do.
As Kisame looked around, everyone was busy, and he searched for his partner. After he couldn't see him anywhere in the cave, he turned away from the group. Sometimes Itachi liked to be alone. A little farther left than the main entrance, the Uchiha found a sub-cave. When the two men wanted to be alone, or if Itachi wanted a moment by himself to think, he would go there. Kisame had always made sure that the "hiding place" remained hidden and that no one else could see it. When he got there, Itachi was sitting in a chair with his back to the entrance. The room was almost empty, with an old table, two chairs, and a mattress on the floor. There was no need for anything else. As Kisame stepped into the room, he placed his left hand on the shoulder of his companion.
"Hitode."
Many people would have been surprised by Kisame's tone of voice. His usual voice was harsh and rocky. It would never have occurred to them that he had such a tender voice.
"Yes, Hachimitsu?"
After moving the other chair closer to him, the bluish-skinned man took his hand. He then gently pulled him towards him and kissed him.
"How are you feeling? Do your eyes hurt?"
Kisame's life had never been the same since the first time he saw Itachi. He didn't know what was going on at first. His entire upbringing consisted of hatred, anger, and killing. He had never experienced affection, tenderness, or love. Kisame was unable to understand what was happening. At first, the shark-man had believed the Uchiha had put him in some kind of genjutsu to control him. He quickly brushed that explanation aside, Kisame had complete control over his mental faculties. There was always a calm, gentle look on Itachi's face when he looked at him. Coming from a man who had killed practically his entire clan was very destabilizing for him.
After all the time, the journey, and their fight, he still wanted to stay with Itachi. Pein's suggestion to change pairings had made his heart leap in his chest. Even so, Itachi had said that he liked working with him and didn't want to change partners. The blue man felt relieved by that. They had a particularly difficult fight with another group of nukenin a week or so later, and Kisame had been seriously injured. He thought his last hour had arrived when the man who had been haunting him appeared at his side. Itachi had used his already severely damaged eyes to make their attackers disappear in the fires of Amaterasu.
The pain as well as the loss of blood had caused Kisame to lose consciousness. Upon opening his eyes again, Kisame found himself in a small room in a village lost in Taki no Kuni. He lay in a bed, completely naked and covered in bandages. The shark-man was dizzy when he tried to get up, so he fell back on his pillow. Itachi appeared at this moment wearing only black pants and a black t-shirt. Having closed the door, Itachi stared at him for a long time. Itachi seemed to make up his mind after a few moments, and he walked toward the bed. Itachi sat next to the wounded man, watching him once more, before he gently brought his face to the wounded man's and kissed him. Kisame stopped breathing. Itachi remained motionless as he stared at him. Kisame then did the same as the other man. Suddenly, the blue-skinned man understood what he had felt all along for Itachi. He was in love with another man, a criminal like himself, and Itachi seemed at least attracted to him.
"It's not a physical release I seek, Kisame. I swore I would never allow myself to feel the way I feel about you. After this fight, I realized I was fighting something I had no control over. My heart knows my love for you."
He repositioned himself in the bed of the injured man in order to give him room. He also had the option of pushing him away if he disagreed with what he just said.
"Until you kissed me, I didn't realize what I had. Now I know, though I do not believe you more than you do, that I'm allowed to feel that way. Not with all this blood on my hands, but my heart has long since decided that it belongs to you."
Again and again, they kissed. They spent a week in that little inn learning to love each other. In addition to allowing each other to feel the feelings they had for one another. Itachi and Kisame both struggled with this. On the other hand, they had found some balance. After they returned, they carried on as before, and no one noticed anything unusual.
"Kisame?"
His mind was brought back to the present by Itachi's slightly worried voice. He smiled gently before kissing him again.
"I was remembering the moment we finally found each other."
During their brief glance, the two nukenin looked at each other with affection before Itachi walked away.
"I don't like the idea of Orochimaru being with us when we find my brother."
A second time, Kisame grabbed the man's hand and pulled him close. He sat Itachi on his lap facing him this time.
"I know, but I told you. I am going to decapitate the snake once we find where your brother is. We will then have an extended conversation with your dear little otouto."
Uchiha let his head rest limply on his partner's shoulder. It hurt his eyes, and he had trouble seeing out of his left eye. Itachi wasn't sure how much help he could provide when things got out of hand with Orochimaru or Sasuke. He didn't want to lose the man he loved, but he owed it to himself to make things right with his brother. If Sasuke would give him a chance to talk before, he tried to kill him.
"Let's get some rest, Hitode. I won't let you worry too much. I'll be with you; everything will be fine. Trust me."
While still holding his lover in his arms, the shark-man rose effortlessly from the chair and laid him gently on their bed. Immediately after laying down beside Itachi, Kisame wrapped himself around his lover. After kissing tenderly for a few moments, the heir of the Uchiha placed his head in the hollow of his lover's shoulder. When Kisame wrapped his strong arm around him, he sighed at ease.
