Act One: Awakening

Chapter One

Dwight opened his eyes. He was in a quiet forest, in the middle of the night. He was laying on the ground, his work clothes covered in dirt. He slowly pushed himself up to stand up, and looked around in the darkness.

"H-hello...?"

Dwight waited for a response of any kind. He felt a sharp headache, and held his head. He couldn't remember how he got where he was. He couldn't remember anything else but his name.

After waiting for a few minutes, Dwight decided to find a way out of the woods. He quickly looked around, and picked a direction he might have taken to get where he was. The only sound he heard was his own footsteps. He then heard something else in the distance. He couldn't make out what the sound was. And then another sound, much closer and louder, which startled Dwight.

On the branch of a tree close by was a crow. It cawed at Dwight again. He noticed the crow had a small white bandage wrapped around its right leg. The crow now cawed at Dwight again, repeatedly and louder. Dwight tried to cover his ears.

"Stupid bird..."

Dwight took a single step, before he heard a quick and loud snap. He screamed, and fell onto his left knee. His right foot had stepped into a bear trap. Its metal jaws crushed the spot just above his ankle, blood dripping slowly. Dwight felt a sharp pain in both his right leg and head. The crow had stopped cawing, and then flew down to Dwight, landing beside him. It examined the bear trap for a moment, and then flew away disappearing further into the woods.

"Thanks!" Dwight yelled mockingly. He quickly calmed down, and examined the bear trap the same way the crow did. The bear trap looked old, but functioned the way it was meant to. Dwight thought to himself why a single bear trap would be this far into the woods. He decided to open the trap slowly.

"This is going to hurt... a lot..." Dwight mumbled.

Dwight gently reached for both sides of the trap, and held each. He took a deep breath and tried to pull the trap open. Both jaws slowly pulled apart, now an inch away from his broken and bloody skin. But his hands, covered in blood, gave away both jaws and it quickly closed again. He almost screamed in agony until a hand quickly covered his mouth.

Dwight turned his head slowly, looking into the eyes of a young woman. She had red hair with three pigtails and her outfit appeared similar to that of a jogger. She didn't speak, but reached down to place her hands over his, helping him hold the jaws of the trap. Together, they pulled the bear trap open and Dwight quickly moved away from it. The young woman also quickly dragged Dwight behind a tree. Her face was close to his with one of her hands resting on his shoulder, but she was looking past him. Dwight turned to see what she was looking at.

After a few minutes, a tall figure appeared from the darkness of the woods. Dwight's mouth fell open. The figure wore a rubber outfit and a cleaver, both stained in what looked like blood to Dwight. And metal hooks deep in the back of its back and arms. But what scared Dwight the most was the mask it wore. A smiling mask made of bone.

The figure turned to where Dwight and the young woman were hiding. The young woman moved her head and Dwight's behind the tree, both their eyes focused on each other. She could see the fear in his eyes. After a moment, the figure picked up the trap and walked away, disappearing into the dark woods.

"Who... or what was that? Where are we? And who are you?" Dwight asked.

"I don't know who he is. Or where we are. Or how we got here... But he's not the only killer I've seen. We need to move." The young woman said.

"He's not the only killer you've seen? You mean there's more?" Dwight asked, more alarmed.

"Yes. Another one that can disappear. Become invisible?" The young woman stood up, and checked to see if the killer was around.

"Invisible... How long have you been out here?"

"I woke up a few hours ago. Same as you."

"How did you...?" Dwight began.

"You don't know where you are either..."

"I only remember my name... I'm Dwight." Dwight stood up, and the young woman looked down for a moment.

"Meg."

"Hello Meg," Dwight said. He gave a weak smile. "Thank you... for saving me."

Meg smiled a bit, before turning to walk away. Dwight stood still, unsure if he should walk or even follow her. Before he could decide on anything, he heard her voice in the darkness. "Come on, Dwight."

A/N: So I actually wrote and completed this story late 2020 after the Twins were released. I decided to post the entire story here and on Ao3 before I do a rewrite of it over the summer. I don't mind if people can read it considering I plan to change 90% of the story. I'm just going to write a longer A/N on the last chapter so if you want to know more and what I plan, you can skip to the end of the last chapter.
