Light My Dark

- Death doesn't do buddies. - Dean grumbled, sharpening the end of his blade.

- You don't need to be buddies. You just need to work together for this one day. And it's not a question. - Rowena answered with a flourish, leaning back on her throne.

- Why do I even listen to you? You get whatever you want anyway. And that's not cool, lady of Hell. - Dean put his blade away, smiling softly at Rowena who was already smirking, wine glass in hand.

- Of course, I do. Now go on, our poor Angel is probably already waiting. - She blew him a soft kiss, earning an eye roll from Dean.

Truth be told, Dean didn't like working together with anyone, even his own reapers chose to avoid him at all cost, bothering him only when it was really necessary.

He liked the peace of working alone, going through his time doing what was needed, collecting souls and sometimes even delivering them where they were needed.

But now, all of a sudden, they wanted him to start working together with an Angel! A damn Angel of the Lord!

It was laughable on it's own!

Death working together with an Angel of the Lord!

They probably were having the laugh of a lifetime, taking such a piss off Dean.

But Dean was man of his word, if he said that he would do something, he did it no matter what.

So now he was making his way through the night, going to the silent park where he was supposed to be the infamous Angel.

He stopped short when he noticed an awkward kind of guy, wearing a trenchcoat, standing near the pool of ducks, gazing at the eating creatures.

- We don't reap ducks. They are a lot better than humans but still. -

The guy, an Angel, jumped slightly, turning around to face Dean with eyes so blue that Dean could get lost in them.

- Hello Dean. - Angel said in a deep gravelly voice, tilting his head to one side while studying Dean.

- Who are you? - Dean couldn't help blurting out, already too lost in these blue eyes.

- Castiel. -

There was a long moment of silence where they just gazed into each other's eyes till one of the ducks let out a loud quack, startling both of them.

- So, Cas, we have work to do. I don't know what you did to deserve such punishment, but let's go. - Dean turned around, already walking away in the direction of their first soul to collect.

- It wasn't a punishment. Just a variety of jobs. And you are intriguing. I wanted to see what all the talk was about. A human who turned into Death. Nothing that has happened before. - Cas fell into step with Dean.

- Yeah, well, it was a long fucking time ago. I chose to stay on Earth. The rest was just a follow up. - Dean shrugged, unlocking his Baby and getting in.

- And driving an '67 Chevy Impala. Classic. - Cas smiled softly at Dean.

- Oh, shut up. I would never abandon my Baby! - Dean laughed, starting the car.

Cas just shook his head, turning to watch Dean some more.

Dean watched as Cas leaned over the small baby, scooping it in his arms and whispering something in enochian.

It is always a bit roughter to see a baby being taken, it took Dean a while to stop having a breakdowns after.

But right now, watching Cas being so soft with the gentle exhausted soul, Dean could feel his long forgotten heart squeeze somewhere deep in his chest.

Usually Dean would throw a snarking comment out, urging them to hurry the fuck up but this time he stayed silent, just watching Cas, noting how careful he was, how soft and full of love.

But that's the thing, Angels weren't supposed to be soft or full of love, they were warriors of God, made for armies.

There was something so familiar about Castiel, something that was pulling all of Dean's strings with no apparent answer in sight.

Finally when the small soul was calm, Cas extended his wings, ready to take the small baby up to the Heavens.

Dean heard his breath hitching.

He has seen all kinds of wings, white and golden, ordinary and a bit crooked. But these ones, these were the most stunning ones he had ever seen.

They were silky black with rainbows gleaming all over them, almost shining rainbow, overtaking the black but at the same time complimenting it.

Castiel turned to look at Dean, still holding the small baby carefully in his arms.

He nodded once and was gone, just like that, with a swoosh of his powerful wings, leaving Dean standing in the small hospital bed all stunned.

Maybe working with this Angel won't be so bad, after all. At least, Dean was already looking forward to seeing Castiel again.
