Steve stood by the body of Nick Fury, his director and although he hated to admit it, a friend. Covered with the pale white sheet, his skin colour turning pale and face blank, free of any expression. Steve couldn't take his eyes off the man who was once in charge of S.H.I.E.L.D. It all happened so fast and now there was nothing he could do to save him. His guilty conscience was yelling in his brain, beating him down for not being able to catch the shooter. If only he hadn't of become so distracted by those eyes, he could have caught him in time.
The sound of feet scuffing on the floor caught Steve's attention and he turned to see Violet behind him, holding a cup of coffee from the vending machine. She handed it to him with an inch of a smile on her face, offering some compassion and sympathy for this loss. She felt just as guilty as him.
"Thanks" he murmured.
"I'm so sorry dad… if only I- "before she could continue, Steve interrupted her, shaking his head.
"No, this is not your fault Violet, you did what you had to and got him to the hospital. If it hadn't of been for you, he wouldn't have had a chance to survive" he said in an all-serious tone and Violet sighed, looking down to the ground. It still didn't get rid of her own guilt inside.
"I just wish I could have done more" she whispered, and Steve came over, wrapping an arm around her shoulders and giving her arm a rub.
"You did everything… if only I had caught him" Steve grumbled and Violet looked up at her dad, sad eyes and raised brows.
"I'm sure they will find him, I bet the whole of S.H.I.E.L.D is probably out looking for him, have you given a statement yet?".
"Not yet, director Pierce wants to see me later, I'll tell him what I saw and then hopefully we can track him down… it's going to be hard though, he was fast" Steve sipped the coffee and Violet gave him a reassuring rub on his back.
"I'm sure you'll find him dad, think you're forgetting your fast as well" she pointed out and Steve chuckled softly, finally smiling.
"Thanks, how's your mother?".
"Not good, still trying to process it, she's outside getting some air. I think some people are coming to collect his body soon" Violet looked over to the lifeless body lying a few feet away from them. The night of the shooting kept flashing in her mind, images of blood staining her hands and Fury dying slowly in front of them, driving to the hospital and dragging him inside. She had never had to deal with anything like this before and by far was the most traumatising thing she had witnessed.
Violet left Steve with Fury and ventured out to find her mom. She had never seen her mom so quiet and withdrawn before. Her mother was one to hide her emotions away and only release them when she felt most vulnerable and in need of help or support. Growing up, Violet had always seen her mother as this strong, iron fisted, no nonsense woman. However, after Fury's death, she had now become broken, quiet, sad, something she wasn't used to seeing.
Violet found Natasha in the car park, leaning against a wall, head down and eyes cast angrily at her shoes.
"Hey mom" Violet said softly as she came over and Natasha lifted her head, softening her glance as her daughter reached her.
"Hey baby" she mumbled.
"You, okay?" she knew she wasn't okay, but she still asked anyway. Natasha sighed and ran her fingers through her auburn hair, rubbing her face with her palms and taking a deep breath as if she was preventing herself from crying.
"I'm better, where's your father?".
"He's inside… I'm so sorry mom" Natasha nodded her head a little.
"He was a good friend, a mentor to me even. It's just going to be weird without him" Natasha said gloomily, and Violet reached forward, wrapping her arms around her, hugging her tightly. Natasha returned the hug, squeezing Violet tightly and resting her head on her shoulder.
"I wish I could have done more" Violet said again, guilt riding her all over and Natasha pulled back, a stern look on her face.
"You did everything you could, we all did. Don't let this make you guilty because you are not to blame, I don't know what we would have done without you" Violet gave a soft smile and Natasha pulled her forwards, kissing her forehead.
"Thanks mom… hopefully they find the guy who did it".
"Trust me, it will be our main priority".
There was no way Natasha was going to let this guy get away with this. As soon as S.H.I.E.L.D find him, it with be either imprisonment or death for the crimes committed.
Violet sighed to herself, exhausted after a long day and night with everything that happened to Fury and shoved her name badge in her locker.
"Violet!" she turned and saw Riley jogging up to her, eyes wide and shocked.
"I heard what happened, are you okay?" Riley said with concern.
"Yeah. I'm fine, just tried, it was a long night".
"Shit must have been bad" Riley crossed her arms and Violet let out a huff.
"You don't even want to know, they did everything they could, but he's gone now" tears were starting to form in the back of her eyes, the guilt now flooding back to her, and she sniffled away one tear as it escaped, falling down her cheek.
"Hey, don't beat yourself up, you probably did everything you could and it's not your fault, you said they tried everything but sometimes they don't always make it" it was hard to hear that, but it was the truth and Violet knew it.
"Yeah, yeah your right" Riley grabbed Violet and pulled her in for a tight hug. Violet relaxed in her friends' arms, fighting back the tears and when she pulled away, she gave Riley a smile.
"The hospital is swarmed with agents and that, going to be crazy for while isn't it" Riley nodded with her head behind her, gesturing to the many guards roaming the hospital.
"Yeah, my mom and dad are freaking out, wanting to catch the guy who did it, dad ran after him that night but didn't catch him, said he was too fast".
"Fuck, well I'm sure the whole of S.H.I.E.L.D are on it and I'm sure your parents won't stop until they catch him" Violet was able to laugh at that, knowing it was completely true.
'You got that right; dad has a meeting with the director Pierce to give his statement of the shooter… but there must be reason for this to happen I mean who would just want to assassinate him like that".
"Do you think it's something to do with the mission" Violet looked wide eyed at Riley, now just remembering her parents mission a few nights ago. Of course, things had been strange since them and her mom did mention to her something was going on with S.H.I.E.L.D. The assassination must be to do with what happened or the information her mother was assigned to retrieve. Someone obviously didn't want this information getting out.
Violet debated whether to ask her mom and dad later about it but decided not to. It was best to leave it until they were done mourning the loss of Nick Fury.
She arrived home later that evening, her eyes barely able to keep open as she walked through the front door, throwing her keys into the bowl as normal and dragging herself further in. She heard noises coming from upstairs and suddenly her mom and dad came running downstairs. They were dressed in black tactile gear, her mom suited up and her dad dressed in similar attire.
"What's going on?" Violet asked in confusion. It was as if they were leaving on a mission. But her dad wasn't wearing his Captain America suit. Natasha looked to Steve with a look before coming over to Violet.
"Your father and I need to go somewhere, it's important and we know that it has something to do with Fury's death" she said seriously.
"What now!" Violet exclaimed. She was surprised they were leaving right now, so soon after his death.
"It's going to help us find out who did this and…" Natasha looked over at Steve who have an approving nod.
"Mom what's going on?" Violet demanded. She didn't want her parents to leave right now, leaving her on her own in the house where Fury was shot. What if the shooter came back? She wasn't like her parents and trained in combat skills and weapons. Yes, she knew a little bit but not enough to fight off an assassin who would mostly likely kill her in an instant.
"You know I told you that we think something is going on with S.H.I.E.L.D… well we might be on to it, and we are going to find out with this" Natasha pulled out a silver flash stick.
"That night I downloaded information from that ship onto this drive and Fury couldn't access it, we're going to find out what's on here which might lead us to who killed him and lead us inside S.H.I.E.L.D.
"Do you think we are in danger" Violet asked with a scared tone and Steve came over.
"We don't know but right now we are running out of time. I know this isn't ideal but the sooner we find out, the better we can keep you safe, we won't be gone long, we should be back for tomorrow" Natasha reached into her pocket and pulled out a handgun, cocking it and handing it to Violet. Her small hands wrapped around the metal, feeling the weight of it in her palms and she stared at it.
She had only shot a gun a few times when her mother was showing her what to do but her giving one to Violet now defiantly meant she was to use it. her parents never gave her any weapons to use unless absolutely necessary and now was the first time they meant it.
"Take this, if anyone even looks at you different or comes in the house, use it. I don't care if you kill them, but you use it if you feel unsafe" Natasha said sternly, and Violet gulped. She was a nurse, not a murderer. The last thing she'd want to do was shoot someone, especially after witnessing Fury's death. She shuddered at the thought and swallowed hard, looking between her mom and dad.
She wanted to beg them to stay, to not leave her on her own. It was all so confusing, and she didn't know a clear answer… but this was something her parents had to do. if leaving and going on this mission was going to find out who was behind all this then she'd have to let them go.
Violet took a deep breath, her stomach now a tight ball of nerves and her mouth turning dry.
"Okay" she whispered, fear in her tone.
"Please be careful" she pleaded softly, and Natasha and Steve nodded, walking forwards, and bringing her in for a big hug. Steve kissed her forehead, rubbing the back of her head.
"We will darling, if anyone asks where we are, tell them we had a family emergency to go to and we couldn't hold it back, we'll be back tomorrow afternoon" Steve reassured her, and Violet nodded silently.
"We love you" Natasha whispered, and Violet grabbed her once more, squeezing her tightly.
"I love you too" she fought back the tears again, feeling emotional and overwhelmed by everything and when Natasha pulled away, she felt cold and empty. When the door slammed shut, silence took over the house and Violet stared down at the menacing gun in her hands.
"Fuck me" she whispered to herself.
