Steve stared down at the footprints in the mud of the forest floor. there were large boot prints alongside smaller prints. It was clear that Violet and the winter solider were here. He sighed and stood up, gazing across the forest. He and Natasha had arrived here about twenty minutes after their phone call with Violet. He knew something had happened though when her voice was cut off by a scream and they then heard the fire of a gun.
They had managed to nab themselves a jet to fly over as quickly as they could. Things had turned to the worst for them. The two were currently on the run from S.H.I.E.L.D. They believed that Steve had something to do with Nick Fury's death and Alexander Pierce had sent out a warrant for his arrest. His team S.T.R.I.K.E had turned against him, and everyone was looking for the two. Luckily though they managed to get some help from a friend.
"No sign of anything Cap" Sam wandered over to him and Steve sighed, turning to face him.
"They must have fled as soon as he found out she called us" he said.
"Where do you think he's taking her" Sam asked, crossing his arms as Steve sat on a nearby log, folding his hands as he rested his elbows on his knees, bouncing them up and down as he tried to think.
"I have no idea. Hydra could have secret bases anywhere and most likely have them covered. It's going to be hard to find them".
The day he and Natasha left Violet; they were scouting out a nearby army base which was secretly led by hydra. The whole thing had been abandoned but they managed to uncover a secret hideout underneath, leading to information that Hydra agents were still alive and were about to launch an attack. That was when they realised S.H.I.E.L.D had been compromised and was being led by Hydra agents. It was also where they found out about the winter solider. They didn't know who he was but only that he was a super soldier with the serum running through his veins. With years of combat training and over a dozen kill shots, he was the most ruthless and dangerous person… and he had their daughter.
"Guys, look what I found" Natasha came storming over, cupping something in her hands and when she reached the two of them, she dumped the little pieces on the ground. It was Violet's phone, mashed to smithereens.
"Shit" Sam whispered.
"Guess we can't track her then" Steve said, and Natasha huffed.
Steve had never seen her so worried. She wasn't one to show her emotions on her sleeve but when it came to her daughter, she'd die for her. When they came back from their mission and found their house wrecked to pieces, they knew there had been a fight and with Violet missing, Natasha was ready to go fight anyone who would hurt her.
It took Steve an hour to calm her down and get her to think straight. For one they had no idea who took her then and with them now being on the run and evading arrest, it was harder to go out in public. There was no point in her punching the next person who looked at her funny and draw attention to themselves.
"Fuck, what are we going to do now Steve".
"If they are travelling on foot then we can follow their tracks but it's unlikely they are" he suggested.
"Yeah, because we are going to catch up to them on fucking foot Steve" Natasha snapped, eyes glaring hard at him. Steve narrowed his eyes and stood up, standing tall and puffing his chest out.
"It's better than nothing" he argued back.
"What so you're saying we should fucking walk our way there".
"I'm suggesting we do what we can to find her" the two were stepping closer to each other now, the argument getting more heated. Natasha wasn't afraid to hit her own husband and right now she was reaching boiling point inside. Her fists were clenched by her sides, and she glared up at him.
"Well, nothing is going to work, how are supposed to find her when we have no contact with her" she yelled, and Steve was about to argue back but he stopped himself. He could see the tears in her eyes. This was breaking her. It was frustrating knowing that they had no leads and nowhere to begin to look for her except right here, but nothing was giving them any clues as to where they were.
Natasha shuddered and stepped back, running her hands through her hair with a deep sigh.
"I'm sorry" she whispered.
"Hey, come here" Steve grabbed her and pulled her into his embrace, wrapping his arms around her and kissing her head softly. A soft cry came from his chest as she sobbed quietly, and he squeezed her tightly.
"Fuck Steve, what if… what if he's hurt her, what if he's going to- "Steve cut her off before she could continue.
"No, we can't think like that. I don't think that's their intention. They obviously want her to get to us" he murmured, and Natasha pulled back.
"Tell me she's going to be okay" she pleaded. Steve cupped her face, running his thumbs along her cheeks softly and wiping her fallen tears away.
"She's going to be okay. If she's anything like her mother, which she is, she's going to be strong and fight as much as she can" the comment made Natasha smile and she closed her eyes, breathing in deeply.
"You're right, and if she's anything like her father, she's smart and brave".
Steve smiled softly and leaned down for a peck. Natasha's lips were puffy and soft from her crying, and he rubbed his nose against hers, nuzzling her sweetly.
"Hey guys, come here!" they were interrupted by Sam who came jogging over from the woods. The two looked with curiosity before following him.
"Look what I found" the three of them arrived at a small clearing. The bushes of the forest had been flattened down and there were indents in the mud, long and wide.
"Looks like a chopper was here" Sam said, pointing to the ground. Steve knelt and inspected the tracks, agreeing with Sam that they did look like a helicopter had landed here.
"Well now we know they are travelling by air" Natasha confirmed.
"Choppers not as fast as a jet, we can catch up to them if we're fast enough, come on!".
…
Violet stared out the helicopter window, her eyes barely able to keep open as sleep was threatening to take over her but she didn't want to. She didn't want to let her guard down in front of Bucky. If she was going to get out of here, she needed to be alert at all times.
She wasn't sure how long they had been flying for and her body was starting to cramp. The skin on her wrists was turning raw red and pins and needles tingled through her body. She needed a stretch. There was no way Bucky would allow that. She had broken her trust with him, and his guard was just as strong as hers. Violet had been racking her brain, trying to conjure a plan that would be easy to execute and strong enough to allow her to get away. First point of call would be to gain his trust. Get him to let his guard down and then make her move. But that all depended on where they were going.
Violet straightened herself in the chair as she noticed that they were starting to descend, and she looked out the window to see where they were. It looked like they were still in the woods, the same one she wasn't certain, but the trees and bushes looked similar. As the helicopter started to reach the ground, it looked like it was landed on a helipad and Violet got a closer look.
There was some sort of building hiding under moss and vines. The building was very large and looked old and abandoned. The helipad was only a short walk from the building, and she noticed there was a fence built around it.
'What the hell is this place?'
The helicopter landed and the system was shut. Violet turned her attention forward as Bucky stood from his seat, his boots pounding on the floor as he walked to her. She looked up with wide eyes as he reached into his back pocket and pulled out a set of handcuffs.
'Great, the cuffs again', she thought.
Violet stumbled as Bucky tugged her along, his metal hand gripping her arm tightly, fingers digging into the flesh and starting to leave marks. His grip was sending a spasm through her arm, and she had to stop herself form struggling. His face was stern and serious, and he didn't care that she was falling behind. The cuffs didn't make it easy for her either. As they neared the building, Violet felt the nerves come flooding back, her heart slamming into her chest as fear washed over her, her face turning a paler shade. She stared widely at it and swallowed the hard lump in the back of her throat.
Bucky pulled her along and they reached an old door at the front. The building looked like it was made of stone and Violet noticed there was a keypad beside the door. He pressed his thumb against it, a scanner reading his prints and typed in a code on the pad. Violet watched intently as he pressed the numbers.
5546
The door clicked open and with a firm push, they entered inside.
