Chapter Twelve

I get back to the boat that night and Dad is in the lounge room.

"You told her?"

"Yeah it didn't go well she didn't talk to me the rest of the ride home." I then explain our conversation by the car.

"So do you think that? Do you think this is just between Jim and you, that this doesn't affect her so she shouldn't be involved?"

"It's his problem with me."

"That has continued to cause ramifications through her life as well. It's not just you, she is involved as well. Do you want her? Do you want another chance?" I nod, "do you want to date her for the next few months before she leaves for college or do you want a relationship with her? Knowing that a relationship will involve planning for the next couple of years together at least?"

"I've never been able to just date Bren. I don't want to. Dad I need her I can't see that ever stopping."

"Then you have to stop thinking like you are a one and start thinking like you are a two. If it effects you it effects her, and vice a versa. It's what she was trying to get at in your college conversation months ago and what you just demonstrated you don't still understand."

"Fuck." If I have any hair left from pulling it these last few weeks I will be surprised.

"Call her."

"It's too late."

"Tomorrow morning then."

I ring in the morning and Brandon tells me she is in the shower, it's the first time he's spoken to me and something in his tone tells me he knows. He knows of the threat. I give him the number and ask for him to pass it along to her. He agrees.

She doesn't call while I get ready for school or while I drink my coffee on the deck watching the misty sky try and figure out if it wants to rain or be overcast. When I'm nearly at the end of my coffee the neighbour on the dock calls up to me advising me that Jack's car can't be there this late in the morning without getting towed.

Stupid weekday carpark rules. Not seeing dad I grab his keys and walk down the ramp to move his car to the street. Before I can get even halfway there he's calling out to me. I stop and turn to him. I can tell from his face that Bren's on the phone at his ear, he calmly walks down to me chatting to her the whole time. When he's in front of me I can finally hear his end of the conversation.

"Okay sweetheart he's here so I'll pass you over to him, and remember what I said okay?"

She must respond because he laughs, "if you can, try and come over this weekend for us to go fishing okay, and remember us McKay's love having you around so you can come by whenever you like it's your home to."

He laughs at whatever she sasses back, "yeah sweetheart you can have your own boat bedroom but from the glare that just went across Dylan's face he may not agree with his old man on that one. I'll pass you over as he looks a second a way from snatching the phone from me. Have fun at school today. Take care."

He covers the mouth piece, "her own room?"

"Son don't blame your old man, I'm pretty sure if she asked me for a green pony I'd go find her one." I roll my eyes at least he is able to admit it. "You moving the car?"

"Yeah residential parking ends now."

"Well I'll take care of that and you make it right with your girl."

"Thanks Dad." He passes me the phone and I pass him the keys. As he walks past me he squeezes my shoulder and gives me a smile.

Three minutes later the phone is dropped and I'm sprinting at a burning mess.
