Chapter 6
Oswald stepped out of the police department to see Mickey and Pipwolf sitting at the base of the steps with Roger. Roger turned around first and jumped to his feet, grasping Oswald's hand in both of his own. "How can I ever thank you. You saved my life."
Oswald took a moment to recover from the sudden handshake before a smile pulled on his face. "Just keep doing what you're doing."
Roger released the hand as he said, "But there's got to be something we-"
"Maybe get yourself someone you trust to act as a real body guard," Pipwolf piped up with. He threw his thumb at the station they stood in front of and added, "I'm sure that won't be the last attempt made."
"Maybe Joe'd be willing," Roger said more to himself.
"We've gotta get going," Mickey said, looking across the street at the clock above city hall. He looked back at Roger and said, "The girls'll start to worry about us."
"Maybe in a few months you could pop back over," Roger offered, pushing his hands in his trouser pockets. He let out a laugh and added, "If Bittie hasn't gone searching for you before then,"
"We'd like that," Oswald said as Mickey nodded his agreement.
"Come on, the portal just showed up," Pipwolf said, holding a curved drainpipe just out of his pocket. He shoved it back inside before adding, "They say it's not expected to stay open too long."
"Guess that's our cue," Mickey said, holding out his hand to Roger. "Give our good byes to Ophelia and Bittie."
"They'll be sad you had to leave without telling you that in person," Roger said, taking the hand to shake.
The two released hands as Pipwolf led Oswald and Mickey down the sidewalk. Oswald glanced over his shoulder to see Roger watching them leave. Roger raised up his hand to give a wave, getting Oswald to mirror the mouse's gesture.
