Chapter Three
The next part of our story begins five miles outside of Crowley, Texas. Marcus, his friend D'Angelo and newcomer Jacquii are traveling in a small group together towards Dallas, TX on account of Professor Burrow. Each of them have their brand new Starter Pokemon on their side, yet in the hour or so they had been venturing, not much progress had been made.
"So, Marcus was it?" Jacquii stated, following the boys lead. She held the spherical ball holding her Mudkip in her hand, admiring it as if it was the last Pokeball on it. "I'm not from the area and all but how far is it from Dallas? And why couldn't we just take a train ride or something?"
"We're like 30 miles out so I'd say probably five or six hours if we keep walking like this," Marcus replied, checking his PokeDex. "And we're gonna be on our own so until we start getting winnings from battles and missions, I think it's best we not spend $200 each on a train ticket."
Hearing this both Jacquii and Dee fell over anime-style, their stomachs touching their back.
"Six houuuuurs?" D'Angelo pouted. Looking ahead all that he could see was grass, dirt, and sand. "Well let's sit here for a minute or two? My legs are killing me and I wish this Torchic could fly,"
Before Marcus could so much as deny the request, his friend had both found a spot to rest and immediately fallen over into a semi-deep slumber. Grunting in annoyance, he reached into his pocket, pulling out the Pokeball containing his only Pokemon. If D'Angelo was so hellbent on resting, then in the meantime, he could get a little bit of training in with Treecko.
"Jacquii, I'm about to go try to see what kind of Pokemon I can find out here to beat on," Marcus exclaimed before disappearing into a fold of trees. "Make sure my friend doesn't get his Pokemon snatched from him as he rests," He added.
As his friends took a minute to catch up on their breath, Marcus ventured a little on his own. Bringing out his grass-type starter to soak in some sun as well, he sees just how jovial and hasty the young Pokemon is. Twirling its tail into the sunlight, Marcus's Treecko lets off a joyful coo before it falls into a defensive position, its senses having obviously caught onto something Marcus hadn't yet.
Just as that had happened, the young man caught a small silhouette sweep across his Pokemon's feet. Trying to see just what it was, Marcus's eyes narrowed it down to being a small Pokemon -it seemed to be the Desert Croc Pokemon, Sandile.
"What Pokemon is that?" Marcus asked himself, pulling out his PokeDex. Scanning the Sandile, the robotic voice spat out, saying.
"Sandile, the Desert Croc Pokemon," It began, before continuing. "A dark membrane on its face protects its eyes from the harsh rays of the sun. Although they have been spotted by humans, this Pokemon usually keeps itself buried in the ground with its eyes and nose sticking out. This Pokemon is a wild Ground- and Dark-type. Known moves include Thunder Fang and Sand Attack."
A smile spread across Marcus's face as he put his Pokedex up, putting his thumb up at the thought of his first wild Pokemon encounter. There was no need to throw his Treecko out for battle, it was already out and by the look of its tail, more than ready to wet its feet in battle. "Sandile, get ready to join my team!" The boy yelled out. "Treecko, start things out with a Pound attack."
The Wood Gecko Pokemon's eyes narrowed in on its opponent and with unmatched speed, it struck the Ground-type with a closed fist, inflicting a small amount of damage and sending Sandile to the ground with a thud. With intense vigor though, the Sandile shot at its opponent just as it had been charged at -however, it opened its mouth to show a mouth full of fangs as it charged, the Sandile's jaws becoming electrified as it attempted its Thunder Fang attack.
"Get out of the way of that one and finish it off with another Pound attack," Marcus ordered, putting his hand in his pocket to pull out a fresh Pokeball.
Striking the Desert Croc Pokemon with another one of its pound attacks, Marcus's Treecko's tail collided with the top of its foe's head, connecting with one of its Pound attacks. Hitting the ground again, the Sandile was knocked completely unconscious as a cloud of dust settled, leaving Marcus to attempt to capture it for a spot in his team of just one.
Getting into a throwing stance reminiscent of a pitcher, Marcus hurled the empty Pokeball at his vanquished opponent. Unable to move in the slightest, the Sandile watched as the Pokeball struck it and sucked it into itself. In a flash of light, the Pokeball rolled around for a total of ten seconds before a clicking sound echoed through the meadow, which meant that it had worked! Sandile was now a part of Marcus's new team of Pokemon.
"One done, a couple hundred to go!" Marcus laughed in joy as he dropped down to pick up the Pokeball. Admiring the ball in his hand, he then used his free hand to pet his Starter Pokemon, congratulating the Grass starter on a fight well-fought. "Looks like I have a brand new Sandile,"
After celebrating his short-lived victory, Marcus made his way back over to where his friends had been resting. Awaiting him was D'Angelo, his friend, now fully-rested and holding two Pokeballs of his own.
"Marcus, I know you had to have found a wild Pokemon with how long you've taken," He began, speaking before Marcus could even show off his new friend. "A new friend might have found me midway through my nap… don't show me what you got yet, let's have a friendly battle before we continue."
Marcus was stunned to hear that his friend had also captured an extra Pokemon already. All that meant though was that he would have to find another member of his team, he had to catch them all but right now, he was not going to say no to a challenge from any other trainer, not even D'Angelo!
"Let's do it!" He retorted, turning to Jacquii. "Be our referee beautiful?" He asked, his charm nothing if not evident in his tone.
Not even two minutes later, both Trainers stood across a clearing from each other, Pokeballs in each of their hands. This would be the first of many battles that the two friendly rivals would face off against each other. Both of them had two Pokemon and while the victor of this one gained nothing but bragging rights, the energy was tense in the air as D'Angelo's hazel eyes met the fire inside of Marcus's brown ones. In the middle of the two stood their third comrade, acting as the referee of their match. She was about to witness her first Pokemon Battle up close and it did nothing but make her want to give her Mudkip a chance of its own.
"This Pokemon battle is now ready to commence," Jacquii announced thrillingly. "Each one of you will use both of your available Pokemon and the battle will continue until both Pokemon in one of your parties are unable to continue, begin!"
"Sandile, time to see what you can do!" Marcus shouted, sending out his new Pokemon just as his friend threw out his own Pokeball.
"Slakoth, now's not the time to rest," Burrow retorted, showing off his new Pokemon as well. With a slight yawn, the Sloth Pokemon laid its body out in front of its trainer, the battle ready to begin.
