Chapter 6
Matt snuggled into his bed and closed his eyes. He was so tired, he fell into a deep sleep. Tyrone on the other hand slightly opened Matt's bedroom and smiled to see Matt finally settled down. He left towards his room when he received a phone call. It didn't say a name, but Tyrone knew who it was instantly. He saw the code BM.
"Hello?" answered Tyrone.
"Where did you and Matt go?" asked Sam on the other line. He didn't sound like he was pleased.
"N-Nowhere! We were home the whole time." said Tyrone.
"I heard from a reliable source you and Matt went out for a walk." said Sam.
"What source?" asked Tyrone carefully.
"The Mothman sensed you two were in danger. However, something got in the way, you two were saved." said Sam.
Tyrone didn't say a word. But Sam was smart and he knew how to speak.
"The Mothman told me a woman stopped you boys from walking further into the park. And just a few feet from where you were standing was the cloaked figure who is kidnapping children." said Sam.
"No way!" cried Tyrone.
"Yes way!" replied Sam.
"Does Mom know?" asked Tyrone, cringing and sitting on the couch.
He heard a light chuckle and Sam replied. "No. The Mothman told me in secret."
"I'm sorry Dad. Matt and I got bored and we thought of doing something outside." said Tyrone.
"I know boys. But it's not safe. You know there is a freak out there kidnapping kids. You boys could have been next, and our memories would have been wiped or something. You know all the mumbo jumbo of this joint we live in." said Sam.
"I know Dad." replied Tyrone.
"Things here are not looking great. Your Mom and I are going to stick around a little longer. Which means you two need to stay put." said Sam.
"You mean we're being quarantined at home?" asked Tyrone.
"For the time being. The sword warriors are looking for the cloaked figure as we speak, but that thing escapes them. While this is going on, you two stay there and don't go out for whatever." said Sam.
"Geez. We just had to be friends with a Mothman." said Tyrone.
"Yep. He sees everything. He'll let me know if things go sour for you boys." said Sam.
"Oh man." said Tyrone, slightly disappointed.
The following day, Tyrone told Matt about the call.
"You're kidding me!" he said aloud.
"Dad knows we bailed home. If we do it again, we might get grounded." said Tyrone.
"But it only happened when the cloaked figure was at the park. Why don't we try going to places where the shadow won't attack us?" asked Matt.
"That would work. Except we don't know exactly where the shadow would strike next." said Tyrone.
Just then, a phone rang. Well, not really a ringtone. A loud beeping noise. An Amber Alert. Tyrone looked at his phone and read aloud.
"Missing. Two little girls from Portland. Whereabouts unknown. Last seen in Lloyd Center Mall."
"It happened again? Hijole." said Matt.
"It did. But something is off. The parents are aware their kids are missing. Otherwise they wouldn't put the alert here." said Tyrone.
"Maybe it's another case." said Matt.
"Or it could be the same thing. I don't know." Tyrone said.
Just then, another alert. A new Amber Alert. Tyrone and Matt both looked at eachother wide eyed and they read the new one aloud.
"A teenage boy went missing near Hillsboro. Last seen at the TV Highway Movie theater." said Tyrone.
"I used to go to that theater with Marcos." said Matt. He quickly grabbed the remote and turned on the TV. Apparently, the news was on, and the report was that of the missing children.
"What is this? What is happening?" asked Tyrone. The news reporter on TV looked astonished as she read her report out loud. Apparently, more children have been going missing. And they were being reported, which was something that has never happened before.
"Now everyone knows the truth," said Matt.
"But why now? What's going on?" asked Tyrone.
"Can you contact Dad again?" asked Matt.
Tyrone pulled out his phone and called Sam.
There was no answer. In fact, there was no signal. Tyrone shook his head and Matt's eyes went a little wide with worry. The boys tried to dial back for Sam, but again, there was no answer.
"What is going on?" asked Tyrone. The boys then heard a knock at their door. Matt quickly hid behind a closet in the living room while Tyrone pulled out his rifle just in case. He politely asked who was on the other side.
"Who is it?" he asked, trying to sound mature and older.
"Hi. I'm here to deliver a large Italian BMT under the name Super Awesome Rockstar from the Fifth Dimension?"
Tyrone turned to see Matt poking his head out slowly and smiling sheepishly.
"You got the right address." said Tyrone as he opened the door and paid the food delivery guy. After he left, Tyrone noticed something very peculiar. It started to snow. Which was odd. Snow usually happens sometime in December or early January. However, this month was October. Which meant that it should still be Autumn.
The food delivery guy looked up at the sky and smiled. "Wow! It started snowing. That's cool. Snowing in October. Weird." said the guy. He simply shrugged off and drove away. Slowly but surely, it started to snow very hard and soon the ground was covered in deep snow. Tyrone closed the door and turned on the heater in the house. This was very worrisome. No Sam and Natalie to contact and now there was snow happening in October. Something was not right.
"You don't think it could be him?" asked Matt.
"Who?" asked Tyrone.
"The man in the black cloak." said Matt.
"You mean the kidnapper?" asked Tyrone.
"No. The other man in the black cloak." said Matt.
"Oh. You mean… the Dark Master." said Tyrone, remembering the events from Summer.
"Yeah. Him." said Matt.
"I don't think so. This must be some strange weather we are having. You know; Oregon." said Tyrone.
"Dude, I've lived in Oregon most of my life and I've never seen weather like this before." said Matt.
"Let's not worry too much. Why don't we play some video games or watch some Netflix?" asked Tyrone.
After a couple of hours, it kept on snowing and the snow didn't stop. Tyrone and Matt at first were excited that it was snowing beautifully outside, but now it was becoming very scary. How were Sam and Natalie in the forest? Are they someplace warm? Are they safe? Tyrone didn't want to think a lot. Instead, Matt started to curse out loud.
"What's going on!" cried Tyrone, snapping out of his thoughts.
"That darn guy hiding behind the pillar got me! Hijo de su…. I'll calm down." said Matt.
"What the what?" asked Tyrone teasingly.
"Spanish curse words. You wouldn't get it." said Matt.
"Oh sure. Cause I'm a white guy." said Tyrone smiling and patting Matt's head.
"It's not that. It's very … uncultural." said Matt.
"Right, like you." said Tyrone.
"Shut up!" said Matt.
"What's the Spanish word for savage?" asked Tyrone.
"Salvaje." replied Matt.
"Oh. Salvajei." said Tyrone.
"Salva- JE!" cried Matt.
"SalvaJEI!" said Tyrone.
"No no. Repeat after me. Salvaje. Sal Va Je. Je. Je!" said Matt.
"Saliva." said Tyrone.
"You're getting wrong Ty! You got frijoles in the brain!" said Matt.
"Frijoleis this!" said Tyrone as he began to tickle Matt.
"No! I surrender! Let me go!" cried Matt, laughing out loud.
"You're not getting away!" said Tyrone, laughing.
Matt started to run and Tyrone chased after him in the house. Matt quickly went upstairs and hid in one of the rooms. Tyrone was in the hallway and smiled.
"Come out, come out where ever you are. Don't be shy little guy. I just want to talk things out." said Tyrone.
"You want to deport me!" said Matt out loud. Tyrone figured where his voice came from.
"No! What a nasty idea! You're too cute to deport." said Tyrone teasingly.
"What are you going to do?" asked Matt.
"Tickle you until your brains pop out." replied Tyrone. He then opened the closet and found Matt hiding behind the clothes.
"Got you!" cried Tyrone. He reached through the clothes and tickled Matt.
"Now you asked for it!" cried Matt.
He then started to tickle Tyrone on the ribs and Tyrone laughed out loud.
"Release! Release!" he cried. The boys laughed so hard they fell on the bed.
"You are so mean!" cried Matt, still chuckling with a funny bone.
"I know. You're meaner." said Tyrone.
"Eww. That sounds wrong!" cried Matt.
"What, I said… oh I get. I see what you did there. Little perv!" said Tyrone.
"You're a pervert! I saw your search history on your computer the first night I was here. You were looking up men's underwear!" cried Matt.
"That was for me you little termite!" said Tyrone as he grabbed Matt and tickled him again.
"Stop! I surrender!" cried Matt.
In a few hours, the boys were having some snacks in the kitchen. And the snow kept on coming.
"I wonder when it will stop." said Tyrone worriedly.
"Has it ever snowed this much before?" asked Matt.
"Back in 2010. I think I was about your age when it snowed that much. I remember we had a three week long winter break." said Tyrone.
"That is so cool." said Matt.
"Yeah. When my Mom and Dad were still around, they would make snowmen outside with me, and Mom would take pictures and post them on Facebook. My Dad never liked Facebook, but my Mom loved posting photos of us there." said Tyrone.
"Is her page still up?" asked Matt.
"It is. But I don't want to look at it. It just brings back unhappy memories for me." said Tyrone.
"I'm sorry." said Matt.
"What about you? Did you and Marcos ever had fun in the snow before?" asked Tyrone.
"Not really. Marcos never liked the snow. I did though. And I never made a Snowman before." said Matt.
"Hold the phone. You never made a Snowman before?! Like ever?!" cried Tyrone.
Matt shook his head and Tyrone stood up. "Put on your coat. We're making one right now." said Tyrone.
"But it's dark out." said Matt.
"Tomorrow then. Tomorrow, we're making your first Snowman!" said Tyrone.
Matt smiled. "Okay. That sounds like fun." he said softly.
In her motel room, cozied up in the warmth of the heater, Destiny saw the snow and she couldn't believe her eyes. She's seen snow before, but never this hard and never in October. The weather should still be a little bit hot in the month. But this was unnatural. And very scary. Destiny wondered if this had anything to do with what was going on earlier today. More reports of missing kids popped up and immediately Destiny thought of the person in the black cloak. She couldn't stand still. She grabbed her notebook and opened her journal. For the past few hours since she arrived, she's been working on notes about missing children and their patterns.
Apparently, she sadly discovered that most kidnappers lure children with candy, gifts and even threats. Destiny's fingers were sore for writing a lot, but this was something she felt like she needed to do. She planned her day ahead. Tomorrow, she thought, she would go to the library as a start. Then she would go to town and head on to Cannon Beach. Perhaps there is something she could find there. Whatever was going on, she realized that there was something very wrong in town. Was this supernatural? Was this coincidental? She needed to find out for herself. She needed to stop this person and save the children. She had to. It was in her heart to do so.
