Chapter 2:
"BEEEEEEEEP!" I woke up to the sound of my annoying alarm clock. I sat up and looked around my little tent home.
It was a tent canvas under some coverage from a beautiful oak. When you walked in to the right was a kitchen like area, I had a little portable stove and microwave. This side of the shelter took up almost the whole right side of the tent. Lucky for me I was good at squishing my stuff into tight spaces. After the stove there was my ting fridge, and when I say fridge I mean a cooler with food inside.
I looked at the time, it was 4:30 am. I wake up this early because I live in a forest about two miles from my school, but I walk since I could not easily explain riding a pegasus to school now could I?
I got up and got dressed. I looked in my mirror, I had on a gray tank top with my jean shorts, and my blue wolf hoodie. My hair still had the teal streaks in it from ten years ago. As far as I could tell they were permanent and they grew with my hair. Seeing as when I was five my hair was in a bob and now it was down to my hips. I brushed my hair and braided it on the side.
I slung my backpack over my shoulder and got my celestial bronze dagger and sword. It may seem strange for a sixteen year old to have a dagger or sword, especially one that was bronze! It is, normally, when you are a demigod these are the things that keep you alive other than you wit and survival skills. I stuffed them in my pack.
On the walk to school I heard police sirens. "Oh great, now what?" I was about a mile away from school now, at the fence that I cut a hole in so I could get in and out. I crouched behind a tree to observe. There were about three police cars, and two normal cars that looked like they had crashed into each other. Just a fender-bender, good.
I slipped through the fence and around the cars, to the crosswalk. I pressed the button and waited. I looked around to make sure I was not being followed, and believe me I had been followed before. It looked like normal everyday foot traffic. DING. I walked across, onto the school campus.
When I got to the side doors that lead to before care, Mrs. Lisa checked me in. I was about to walk in when she said,
"Wait a second Grace, are you sure you are supposed to be here today?"
"Yes ma'am Mrs. Lisa I'm sure I am." I replied, before quickly slipping in to avoid more unnecessary questions.
I could feel her eyes on the back of my head, I wanted to stop, turn around, and say What? But I held back. Mrs. Lisa was nice, but she was new, for all I know she could be a monster.
I went through the double doors separating the cafeteria from the hallway, there was a police officer talking to the teacher. I sat down right beside them, playing the innocent I'm just reading a book act, really, I was listening to them talk.
"There was a kidnapping last night about two miles from here. You need to keep the kids inside today for the most part."The officer said
" Will do, officer, also my best wishes to the search, I hope you find them." The teacher replied.
The officer walked out of the cafeteria, I looked at him as he was leaving and thought to myself please, oh please, stay away from my tent!
The bell rang, I got up and went to the homeroom, most kids don't arrive until the second bell rings at 8:00 but since I do our teacher, Mr. Brian lets me help him set up for the day. When I get inside the classroom, Mr. Brian turns to me but his eyes seem distant, almost as if he is blind. I decided to overlook it for now, but I'm still watching him, just to make sure he is ok.
I end up being able to do all of the things assigned to me:
Wash the whiteboard - check!
Clean the desk tops - check!
Sweep the floor - check!
Set out morning work - check!
Right as I got into my seat, the bell rang, and everyone filed in. I started doing the morning work, it was a simple multiplication sheet. I got done pretty fast, the funny thing was that when I got done most people were just starting! I know I must seem like a socially deprived person, but I'm not, just none of my friends are in, home room. I started to take in my surroundings, looking for monsters, and frankly strange activity. None, except for the fact that Mr. Brian looked blind and no one but me seemed to notice. Then I realized something, what if no one else realized because they were like Mr. Brian to! I looked behind me and sure enough the boy sitting behind me looked like he was blind too! The really strange thing was that, despite basically being blind, they acted like their normal selves, which worried me. This most likely meant there was a monster hiding in my school, and I was up for grabs.
The speaker came on and the principal asked for all the teachers to bring their students to the cafeteria for an important announcement.
It took awhile but finally we were all in the cafeteria. It was a huge box that easily could fit about seven hundred people. Which was good since we had about that many people in the school building at all times. The principal walked up to the podium and said
"I'm so sorry for this interruption, but it is very important"
Honestly I was half tempted to listen but my ADHD got the best of me, so I looked around for any new teachers, or subs. I might seem paranoid, but I really just wanted today to be a normal day! Is that really so bad? Darn it! I spotted the thing/person I was looking for, and I'm pretty sure that the entire time I've been here she has been looking right at me.
The thing was disguised as a middle aged woman with long brown hair, piercing blue eyes, and a gray tank top with jeans. This may sound like a normal teacher to you, but I knew a monster when I saw one.
I tuned back into what the principal was talking about.
"Since there was a kidnapping in this vicinity, last night, school will be ending right after this assembly. I know, I know, you all can't wait to go home and have fun, but just know; this is only so that the police can search everywhere, easier." The chatter started immediately, nothing like this had ever happened here before. The principal cleared his throat, signaling he was not done. "Because of this unfortunate incident, the bikers and walkers will be escorted in groups of five to six. Listen carefully if this applies to you, because you will need to know which teacher to walk to once we are dismissed." He pulled a piece of paper from his pocket, unfolded it and started to read.
"Freshman will be with Mr. Bavarian," he pointed to a middle aged hispanic man. I only knew he was Hispanic because he taught me spanish class, he had talked about his heritage a lot.
"Sophomores will be with Miss Claude," this time he gestured to a younger woman who looked fresh out of college.
"Juniors will be with Miss Clayson," he pointed to the monster, who, by the way, is still looking at me. Darn it she was walking my group home.
"And finally, seniors with Mrs. Emerson," he pointed to the teacher next to him, also the one from this morning.
"Well kids since this is the last day of school, have a great summer, this assembly is over." The principal walked down from the stage, and out the double doors.
All the bikers and walkers walked up to their respective else just sat talking to their friends, waiting for their name to be called, or for the bus.
My friend Sloan came up to me, "hi!" She said.
"Hi," I replied dejectedly.
As glad as I was to see her, I was scared because Miss queen of creepy was still looking right at me. The only thing I was happy about was that Sloan did not look almost blind like everyone else did. She looked like her normal self to me. She had straight blond hair with a light blue streak on the left side of her head. When I first met her I thought that she was a demigod, like me. But she didn't have that vibe about her. Trust me I would know, I had met plenty of demigods over the years. Heck, I had even met my own brother!
If you think I mean Percy Jackson, then you are correct. A few years ago I had met him at Yancy Academy. I was a few years below him, but we had become acquaintances.
"Hello?Earth to Grace?" Sloan said.
" , I zoned out didn't I?" I replied.
"Yeah, duh. You ok? Cause you look kind of scared," Sloan questioned.
"Yeah I'm okay." I lied.
"Spill." Sloan replied with her serious glare on.
"Ugh, fine! I am scared, this lady Miss Clayson, I don't trust her." I told her.
"Well honestly, I'm with you, cause I don't know if you have noticed, but ever since we came in she has not stopped looking at you." She replied.
"I know, that's what makes it so creepy." At this point I knew she was a monster, I was glad Sloan's house was before mine. I was the farthest from the school, in our group.
"Alright little mortals, listen up!" Miss Clayson said. She looked at me when she said mortals.
I telepathically told her, "listen, I know you're a monster and you want to fight me, but here's the deal, my "house" is the last one in the line. So once everyone is where they need to be we can fight, but these mortals are not your target, I am. Plus that way When you kill me there won't be any witnesses." I really hope this works.
"Fine, sea spawn. I will abide by this, but only because I don't want there to be any witnesses." Her voice sounded like she was a bird who could talk.
As we were walking through the halls to the back doors, where we start walking from, Sloan started talking to me. I wasn't really paying attention so I threw in the occasional nod, really, and that's cool.
I started racking my brain searching through my infinite knowledge of Greek "mythology". With what see looked like, I figured out that she was one of two things,
1 ) A giant crow (yep those are real)
2 ) A strix
Honestly I was hoping it was the former rather than the latter, but with my luck I knew it was the latter. I did not know that strix could disguise themselves as humans, then again the mist is really powerful.
~Time skip~
"Bye, Sloan!" I said. We had just dropped her off at her house.
"Bye, Grace! See you!" SHe said before entering her home.
I was scared, I did not know what was coming next. Me and 'Miss Clayson' walked to the forest where my tent was hidden. She turned around to face me, and I saw her for what she really was. She really was a strix, so just like her brethren she looked like a ginormous deadly owl. Strangely enough though she was purple instead of blue, then it hit me, this was the QUEEN of the strixs. I reminded myself of two things:
1 ) don't get scratched because then you will get paralyzed
2 ) don't kill her you will get cursed by the fates
Oh really? Is that all? My brain asked. It made sense, these things are deadly and really hard to fight. Since well, ya know, paralyzing scratches. In the few seconds it took me to realize these things she lunged. I dodged just in the nick of time.
"Stop moving and just let me kill you!" She screamed.
"Not in a million frickin' years!" I replied.
Before she attacked again I was able to summon my dagger and sword. Now all I had to do was avoid dying, get to my tent, get raven, and get out of here.
Again my brain replied, ya know that's impossible right? My conscience was really good at pointing obvious things out.
The rest of my brain replied, It's the best chance we got, unless you have any better ideas? It was silent, and settled.
She attacked me again, this time barley missing my face, but banging head first into a tree. Just to my luck she did not die. I took the few seconds it gave me and started to run. I was running as fast as I could using my blades to cut away branches and vines that got in my way. In about five minutes I reached my campsite.
I quickly grabbed my clothes, electronics, and books. I whistled for Raven to she came I looked at her beautiful glossy coat. She is a friesian, and she is almost black but still navy blue, beautiful. I looked in my mirror before we left, my jet black hair was now in a messy braid, and I had multiple scratches from branches.
SCREE!
I turned around 'Miss Clayson was right in front of me, I did a handspring over her and landed on Raven. She took off almost immediately, going about a hundred miles and hour. I closed my eyes and felt for Miss creepy's presence, once I found it I surrounded her in a titanium water bubble that would last for about two hours, I just hoped it would be enough.
"Where are we going, Grace?" Raven asked me.
"To the only place left. Camp," I replied.
"Are you sure?" Raven inquired.
"Ya I'm sure." I ended the conversation. I was exhausted, so I laid my head down on raven's neck and felt myself drift off to sleep.
~Time skip~
I woke up tumbling in the sky. I looked around and saw that we were above camp. 'Miss Clayson' was attacking Raven. I harnessed the wind and flew up to help her. WHen she saw me she stopped attacking Raven and came over to me, before I could do anything she slashed my left leg with her talons. I lost my focus and started falling again. Raven was really angry now. She went to attack 'Miss Clayson' but she also got scratched. I was starting to lose consciousness. 'Miss Clayson' was not following us just hovering in place.
Oh great, we are in the camps barrier now. I thought just before seeing about twenty demigods running towards us. I hit the ground hard, and got knocked out cold.
