Fleeting Rumors Never Die: Wasting Your Breath

"You like her, don't you?" Fletcher stopped dead in his tracks at my accusation, his back to me as he stood in front of the gym entrance, I waited for him to deny it. He could try but I wouldn't buy it. I'd been ignoring it the last two weeks, blowing it off as them simply being childhood friends, but I wasn't really that stupid. I'd heard the rumors not only student's but, teachers had been spreading about them. I'd seen the gestures Jasmine had made to him when Flynn wasn't looking. And, I'd seen the way he treated Flynn compared to others. He didn't put distance between them the way he did others. He didn't ignore her when she teased him like he did Jasmine. He was more patient with her then he had ever been with me. He turned the slightest bit to face me as if not sure what to say. He opened his mouth to speak after several seconds, and I might have rolled my eyes prematurely.

"Don't mistake my emotions for being as underdeveloped as yours simply because we share an age. I'm far more self-aware than you've shown yourself capable of being." I felt my entire face scrunch up in a frown at Fletcher's reply. It was such a roundabout way of denying it that the words I'd been thinking to debunk his argument now sounded too unrelated to use. Instead, I ended up speaking without meaning too;

"Then maybe you don't like Flynn." I retorted in my frustration, was dating beneath him or something? I tried to recover my composure with an additional remark before he could respond, "And, maybe I don't like you." I watched him turn away from me, and I felt proud of myself for making him uncomfortable. He deserved it for pretending he wasn't a teenager like the rest of us. My pride washed away rather quickly however, when I heard him huff;

"Whatever you're getting at. It's a waste of breath." I folded my arms at his words, and turned my attention away from his back, since he wasn't giving me any.

"Oh, come off it!" I shouted at him, I knew boys could be emotionally stunted but, this was ridiculous! "I'm asking if you like someone. It's not that big a deal. Maybe you're the one who's emotionally underdeveloped." I continued to retaliate, I wasn't leaving here without an answer. My last words must have struck something in him because he finally turned to fully face me.

"Spit it out." He ordered, and I whipped my head around to stare at the sleeveless, white shirt under his trench coat, as he was too tall for me to meet his gaze. My frown deepened at his words. I didn't appreciate the way he was speaking to me even if he was annoyed. Sheesh, boys.

"Maybe cut the attitude." I demanded. He let out a puff of air that shouldn't have bothered me but it made my chest tense. He approached me with long, heavy strides in his high-heeled boots as was how he seemed to usually walk. If I couldn't meet his eyes before; I sure as heck couldn't meet them now. He wasn't close enough to crowd me but he was still closer than he needed to be. I stood my ground, ready for him to get upset, or try to deny it once more. "Take my advice." He suggested, in a mocking tone after several seconds, and another puff of air. I was insulted that he would say such a thing, and was tempted to tune him out as I thought of my next comeback. "Don't pursue someone you don't know well enough to love." At his advice, I raised an eyebrow while not looking his way. My frustration was mainly lost at the change in conversation. "You'll only be disappointed when they don't live up to your expectations." He turned away from me as he finished speaking, and while I wasn't usually one to get confused, I was starting to think I'd misunderstood something. My head was down-casted as I tried to figure out where his advice had come from though, I raised my puzzled expression his way as he spoke; "By the way." He added, standing in front of the gym entrance, turned away from me, as before. "If you must know. I love MarĂa." He stated, his annoyance was gone from his tone as he left me standing there.

This is a rough draft excerpt for a story I'm working on called; 'Fleeting Rumors Never Die'. The story itself, is my personal take on a character from Marie and Thomas(aka MnT which is a fanmade second generation for Phineas and Ferb)named Bridgette, and how she meets Maria, Thomas, and all there friends. The whole story takes place from Bridgette's point of view, including this scene. This particular scene won't be taking place for awhile. What's basically happening is Bridgette is confronting Thomas about his crush on Maria, because she herself has a crush on Thomas, and is trying to see if Maria is replaceable(This scene takes place before Maria and Thomas get together). Again, this is a rough draft so many things will likely change about this scene when I added it to the actual story.
