HALLOWEEN SPIRITS

On a windy Halloween morning, Piper walked up to Mark Chao's grave. She had a bouquet of white roses, not that he needed any more flowers. His funeral had only been a couple of days ago and a lot of the flowers from the funeral were still there. She did notice that a couple more beautiful bouquets had been placed.

'He must have been very popular.' Piper thought as she placed the flowers close to his gravestone.

Piper wrapped her dark blue sweater over her white t-shirt and stood there unable to move from her place. She very much wished she could, but something held her there. As if her shoes were glued to that very spot. She had a sense of not belonging and she understood why she felt that way. She had only known Mark for one day, as a ghost; it wasn't a long friendship or anything like that, Yet she found herself at Mark's grave everyday. She nodded, gave a small smile and said her goodbyes.

She knew she had fallen for Mark when he had to cross over and in some way that hurt more each and every day. It didn't hurt because she lost him. It hurt because she barely got to be around him and get to know him. She would have loved to have met him before their initial meeting. But she knew that if she had met him before, it would have hurt even more. That dilemma kept her mind occupied for way too long and Phoebe was noticing.

Piper walked up the steps of the manor after her trip to the cemetery thinking of the what ifs and should haves. She mindlessly walked past Phoebe who was trying to make herself some lunch.

"Thank God your home Piper! Can you whip up something good for lunch" Phoebe said, walking up to the foyer to check who had walked in.

"Hm?" Piper said, trying to wipe the tears away before her sister noticed. Phoebe looked at her and frowned.

"Oh Piper, what's wrong honey?"

"Nothing Phoebes. What did you ask?" Piper said, trying to smile.

"If you could make some lunch. But that's not important now, what's important is what's going on with you. The past few days you've been working double shifts and barely talking to us. You seem sad." Phebe said

"It's been super busy at work and you know how things pick up around holidays." Piper tried to reassure her sister.

"Well, I hope you don't have to work tonight. It's our first Halloween as witches and I wanted us to read some entries in the Book about our family. " Phoebe said a bit hopeful that the celebration would bring her sister's spirits up.

"Oh Phoebe, only you could plan such an eccentric family night." Piper said, almost laughing. Phoebe looked at her pointedly. "I'll be home tonight," Piper added as she passed by her sister and went straight up the stairs and straight to her bedroom.

"What about lunch?" Phebe asked.

"There's food from last night. Go nuts!" Piper shouted back and closed her door. Phoebe rolled her eyes and went back to the kitchen.

Piper was not in the mood for festivities or being around her family. She was sad. She wanted to be left alone. She knew her sister was worried, but there wasn't anything to be worried about. Yes, Piper was sad and grieving; but she was sure that in a couple of days she would be better. Or at least she hoped so. Piper decided to take a nap and layed on her bed and closed her eyes. She felt herself falling asleep but a voice called to her.

"Piper…" It sounded like a whisper in the air. Piper frowned and opened her eyes.

"Piper…" Once again it sounded like the faintest whisper. Piper got up from her bed and looked around. She figured she was just imagining things. The lack of sleep and overwork must have her imagining things. She decided to lay back down and go back to sleep.

Piper began to dream. In her dream she was in what looked like a garden. Flowers of all types and wonderful colors decorated the place. It seemed peaceful and inviting. The people around her began to notice her and she noticed them. It was then that she realized these people looked a bit transparent and a bit wispy. Piper began to panic when she realized they all also looked a bit hazy.

"Piper!?" A familiar male voice said. Piper turned around and was in shock at who called her name.

"Mark!? What is going on here? Where am I? What are you doing here?" Piper began to blab.

Mark gave her a sympathetic smile. "I should be asking you all those questions. You're in the afterlife."

Piper looked at him a little confused. She looked at him and realized he was wearing the same outfit she had met him in and it finally made sense why everyone looked a bit hazy and transparent, even him.

"Is this a dream?" Piper asked fixated on him.

"No, sadly it isn't. You know you don't belong here right? How did you even get here?" Mark asked concerned.

"I don't know, I fell asleep and then I was here. I kept hearing someone calling to me. They sounded like…. you. " Piper said . Mark looked away sheepishly.

"Wait did you call out to me? Did you bring me here?" Piper said, looking around and putting her hand on her hips. Mark smiled, oh how he had missed her. Even if he had barely known her for a day. He sure did miss Piper Halliwell.

"I.. uhm. I don't know. I felt your presence at my gravestone all these days. You seemed sad. It's like a strange pull. Like a call you can't answer. I asked my dad and he said all resting spirits feel the call of their loved ones. I guess because you're a witch, it plays out differently."

Piper looked at him and gave him a small smile and nodded. "Yeah, I guess magic can make things complicated."

They looked at eachother. So much to say, they didn't know where to start,

"Mark I…"

Piper…"

They both looked at each other and smiled.

"Mark, I just wish things turned out differently"

"I know, me too"

Piper was about to say something else when she felt being pulled away. The last thing she saw was Mark and his surprised and sad look. Piper woke up to her sisters looking straight at her.

"Piper, are you ok?" Prue asked, a bit concerned. Piper felt a bit disoriented.

"You've been asleep since noon. I thought something happened. " Phebe said, sitting beside the middle sister and feeling her forehead.

"What do you mean?" Piper said, swatting Phoebe's hand away.

"It's nearly night time. You've been asleep for at least six hours" Prue said, pointing out the window in Piper's room. The middle sister looked and could not believe her eyes.

"That's not possible." Piper whispered.

"You've been acting strange these past couple of days. Are you sure you're ok?" Prue asked.

"I'm fine. I just had a very strange dream. It was surreal." Piper said getting up from her bed and in the process moving Phoebe.

"Well you can let us know about it when we have dinner. Which i had to order since the chef in the family slept the entire day. Don't worry, I ordered from Quake." Phoebe said smiling.

Piper rolled her eyes and walked out her bedroom and into the bathroom.

Prue and Phoebe looked at eachother with concerned looks.

Piper looked at her reflection in the mirror. It had to have been a dream. A weird, wonderful and confusing dream. There was no way that Mark had been calling to her. He barely knew her, no she couldn't believe that. It would just be too cruel knowing that they were calling each other this way. She splashed water on her face. The last thing she needed to do was cry at this moment. Her sisters were already concerned, she didn't want to worry them any more.

When Piper came downstairs, Prue and Phoebe were setting the table.

"Do you think we should worry?" Phoebe asked Prue.

"I don't know. She has been working doubles the last couple of days. Maybe it's just that." Prue said wanting to sound sure.

"I know, but you don't see her like I see her Prue. She seems constantly sad. Today when she came back home, she had been crying. Phoebe said with a bit of urgency.

"You guys, I'm fine. I promise" Piper said, a little exasperated. Prue and Phoebe turned to see their sister.

"We are your sisters, of course we're going to worry about you." Phoebe said with a worried look.

"Sit, let's eat and talk to us." Prue said, offering her a chair. Piper sat down as Phoebe brought in the food from the kitchen.

"I've been thinking a lot about Mark lately. " Piper said, taking a sip of wine that Prue had placed.

"Oh honey!" Phoebe said a little sad.

"Piper, why didn't you tell us you were having a hard time grieving" Prue asked.

"Because it's silly to grieve a ghost you barely know" Piper said

"It isn't. You guys had a connection and those types of connections don't just disappear like that." Phoebe added.

"I also had a dream with Mark." Piper added eating. "It was weird. He said we were calling each other. I heard my name being whispered right before I fell asleep. He said spirits feel the call of their loved ones and I don't know, I guess it worked differently because of magic." Piper said with a crack in her voice. She didn't want to cry, but she didn't think it was possible to hold it all back.

"Maybe it's true. you guys must be able to call each other since you obviously have a connection" Prue said looking at Piper.

Phoebe sat there silently. She was heartbroken for her sister. No one else deserves a loving connection with someone more than Piper. She was sad that Piper didn't get a chance to date Mark or have real time with him. She knew Mark was Pipers 'what if' and that was going to take a while to get over. Even more so if she kept having dreams like that.

"It seems like a wonderful gift to be reassured that your loved ones feel you even after they are gone." Phoebe said with a small smile.

"Yeah, but it makes it a bit harder to let go too." Piper added. "Let's not drag the night with my emotional issues. Phoebe went through a lot of trouble to set up this dinner, let enjoy it.

The three girls enjoyed the remainder of the dinner together and reminisced about Halloween celebrations of the past. That one year Phoebe got in trouble for sneaking out to a Halloween party at SFU when she was 17. The Halloween when Prue was stuck taking a 6 year old Phoebe trick or treating and wasn't able to hang out with Andy and her friends. And the Halloween that Piper had chicken pox when she was 7 and was stuck at home with grams learning how to "cook".

"Come on, to the ATTIC!" Phoebe said after they had all finished eating.

"Phoebe, what are you dragging us into?" It better not be a personal gain spell!" Prue said following behind.

Piper smiled and was about to start walking when once again she heard the faint voice call to her "Piper…"

"Oh Mark.." Piper said a bit sad and looked around.

" Are you coming?" Prue said, turning around by the staircase. Piper nodded and walked toward her sister.

In the attic Phoebe just stared at the book, which was flipping like crazy.

"Guys the book is flipping the pages." Phoebe said as it finally stopped and was displaying the 'To Summon The Dead' page.

Prue walked up to the book and looked at Piper and then to Phoebe. "Is that even possible?"

"I guess, I mean the book wants us to summon someone's ghost. Maybe we get to summon mom or grams, or maybe an ancestor" Phoebe said excitedly.

Piper stood by the doorway taking in the scene. It would be nice to talk to her mom or her grams. She sure could use some motherly advice right now.

"Well I for once would like to talk to mom" Piper said with a small smile.

"Oh we are so doing this now!" Phoebe said excitedly.

"Piper, this could have personal gain consequences. Phoebe, I think it's a bad idea." Prue tried to sway her sisters not to use the spell.

"I say we are doing it. The book clearly wants us to." Phoebe said, smiling and looking over the spell. She walked up to the old chest and pulled out five white candles and began to place them in a circle in front of the podium.

Piper and Prue just looked on. Piper wasn't in the mood to think about the consequences and Prue was trying to prepare for the disaster that was surely about to happen.

"Ready?" Phoebe announced after lighting the last candle. She motioned to her sisters to read together. Piper and Prue walked over and stood side by side of Phoebe.

All Three sisters chanted.

"Hear these words,

Hear my cry,

Spirit from the other side,

Come to me,

I summon thee,

Cross now the great divide."

For a moment nothing seemed to happen and all three sisters looked at each other with a confused look. Phoebe was about to say something when bright lights began to swirl in the middle of the circle. The sisters were in disbelief that such a spell could work. They were anticipating who could be coming through.

Once the light dissipated the sisters were shocked to see who had come through.

"Ugh, hi guys" the male voice said.

Piper just stared and Prue and Phoebe looked at eachother.

"Hmmm…. Did we just summon Piper's dead boyfriend" Phoebe said, breaking the silence.

"Phoebe!" Prue said glaring at her baby sister. Phoebe gave a sheepish smile.

"Can someone please explain what is happening?" Mark asked, a bit confused.

"Well the book asked us to summon a ghost. We just thought our mom would be summoned." Piper said, a bit shocked. "But I guess we messed up somewhere? Or I dunno, Prue said something about personal gain."

"I'll try to fix this" Phoebe said, trying to flip the pages of the book. Mark tried to stop her and took a step outside of the circle of candles and his body became corporeal.

"What is this? This is just too much. I can't handle this right now." Piper said as she saw Mark become flesh and blood once more. She couldn't handle the surprise and sadness she felt. It almost felt like a cruel joke. Like the powers at be were being extra cruel. Piper turned around and walked out of the attic. She couldn't be there one more minute.

"Piper!" Mark called out to her. He was as confused as the women before him and becoming corporeal had confused him a bit more. It had hurt that Piper just stood there and didn't manage more than a basic explanation to what was going on and that she did not seem happy to see him. He looked at the remaining sister in the attic and walked after piper.

Phoebe and Piper just looked at eachother. Phoebe started feeling guilty. Maybe if she hadn't asked her sisters to cast the spell and just stick to her plan, then Piper wouldn't have run out like that. Prue on the other hand was ready to yell at Phoebe. How could her sister be so insensitive at a time like this and how come Piper didn't talk to her about what she was going through.

"Should we go check on PIper?" Phoebe asked.

"No, I think they need to speak. How long will he stay around for" Prue stated.

"The footnote stated "Until the seeker finds what is needed". Phoebe added.

"That's going to be a problem." Prue said under her breath while running a hand through her hair.
