Now, full disclosure, I'm not into TVD much, I know some basics, trivia and such due to what I have heard from others and read on the Internet and at best I've seen some clips or bits and pieces of the show when it aired on TV, but to be completely honest, the show never drew much of my attention and I heard that The Originals, despite its own share of flaws, is superior to TVD in lots of ways but I've been considering this ever since learning that Supernatural basically copied TVD's ending, where one brother dies, another one lives happily ever after until he passes away in the old age, only in Dean's and Sam's it was deserved since both of them died doing and getting what they wanted the most and would've been sensible for them, with Stefan and Damon their endings were just undeserved, especially in Damon's case.
I watched the first few episodes of TVD mainly for research, honestly, while I know it is interesting and I should give it a shot, which I might do one day, the show hasn't really drawn me as other shows but I've heard that The Originals is far superior to TVD, so I might watch both shows and I heard that Legacies aren't really worth my time.
Thank you to Aragorn II Elessar, Stand with Ward and Queen and R4ik3n for some help. Forgive me for inaccuracies or inconsistencies, since I watched just the first few episodes for research and no offense to the fans of TVD/The Originals/Legacies, but while it is superior to certain franchise named after a certain part of the day whose name shall not be mentioned, so far the overall emo vibe hasn't had very profound effect on me, so I eventually dropped the show.
If there are any nitpicks, inaccuracies and such with TVD, excuse a casual fan. I was never able to bring myself to see the whole thing through and don't really have any intention in the near future.
Takes place after the mess with Vicki. And given that Alaric was a vampire hunter too, it'd make sense if Dean's and Sam's father John had met him.
Disclaimer: I do not own The Vampire Diaries or Supernatural.
A black Chevrolet Impala parked at the sideroad, when two men in their late 30s went out.
"What do we know about Mystic Falls?" Dean Winchester asked as his brother Sam opened a book.
"Dad had something about this place mentioned in his journal." Sam said. "Here."
"July 16th, 1992, I arrived at this town outside Richmond, Virginia after hearing about rumors about some killings that were too far from my taste. left the boys at Bobby's so that way I wouldn't have to worry about them. I have yet to figure out the entity doing the killings, but it appears to be some sort of vengeful spirits. I did some digging and the history of the town seems like it's trying to cover something up. The massacre that took place in 1864, caused the town to lose quite a bit of the town's most prominent citizens. The Salvatore family was all but destroyed, and upon further digging I found that the Gilberts and the Salvatores are tied into this history especially. I stayed at the boardinghouse, Zach Salvatore is the one running it. I asked him about the history, but he was very evasive. I tried to talk to the sheriff, but apparently the sheriff was busy because a young mother went missing. Abby Bennett, mother and wife, just disappeared. Upon investigation I found that it had something to do with the young Gilbert girl, Elena. The whole town knows something. Looking into the records, I've noticed patterns not just about the supernatural entity, but also about the town's positions of authorities. It seems as though the Lockwoods reign over the town, and the Fells are the doctors alongside the Gilberts. The sheriff position has been held by a Forbes for almost as long as the town has been around. I looked into the registries some more, and there were other occurrences that bothered me. The Salvatore boardinghouse alone appears to have had its fare share of murders. Back in 1912, the man was killed just outside of it, and in 1930, there was a suicide. In 1953 there was an 'accident' where it seemed that Zach's great grandfather fell down the stairs, and again in 1961, where his wife finally died of a heart attack. Then in 1990, two years ago, there was another suicide, where Zach's brother, Albert Salvatore hung himself off of the balcony. His daughter Samantha moved away. When I asked Zach why he stays in a house like this, he told me that it's family tradition.
I asked about anything ghost related, but he just brushed me off, and said that there was no problem. However, it was last night that the most startling thing happened. I was awake in my room, when I heard a ruckus going on, and crept over to one of the locked rooms, and looked inside. I saw two brothers that were fighting, arguing. I recognized their faces, from old pictures from way back in 1864, they were the two Salvatore brothers, from way back then. Then, I blinked and they were gone. The house appears to be haunted. I checked back into the story and read about the Salvatore brothers, Stefan and Damon. They fell in love with the same woman, and they both were shot down the night of the massacre. I asked Zach if he had anything from the original house in this one and he said that yes there are, but they're mostly found up in the two locked rooms. He told me not to go into those rooms under any circumstances. I asked why, but that night I had another sighting of the Salvatore brothers going at it again. They were still fighting, and it was that night that Zach finally kicked me out. He told me or rather advised me to never return there again. I couldn't finish that hunt."
"What? He never found the bodies and burn them?" Dean asked.
"From what Dad had researched, the brothers were killed later but there's no record of them being buried. Only of Giuseppe and Maria, their parents. And there were some sightings of Stefan and Damon over the years. Their bodies had been taken to some old church but according to Dad the graves are empty. Then he just gave up. Let it go." Sam said.
"Doesn't sound like Dad. He wouldn't drop it unless he had a good reason. So what? Zombies or…" Dean wondered.
"I don't know." Sam admitted. "But he said that he'd found some useful information on the Salvatores in the library."
Dean sighed. More research. Great. If the information could be easily found on the Internet, fine, but old-fashioned reading, that part always annoyed him.
A few hours later, Dean and Sam were in front of the Salvatore Boarding House, eying it.
"That's the place." Dean said.
"Can I help you?"
Dean and Sam turned to face a young man in his late 20s.
"Sorry, we were just admiring this place and… heard some rumors." Sam said.
"What rumors?" The man asked.
"Something about the ghosts of the brothers who used to live here walking around." Dean said and the mennodded.
"Ah, those rumors. Stefan and Damon. These rumors do run by. Boone Salvatore." 'Boone' offered his hand. "If it satisfies your curiosity, feel free to take a look inside—"
"That won't be necessary, thanks." Sam said as he and Dean walked off.
'Boone' smirked. Admiring the place, right. They weren't the first supernatural hunters Damon had had to deal with. They were not going to be an issue for him. Damon focused his enhanced hearing as he eavesdropped on their conversation before Dean and Sam drove away.
"Certainly looked like him from the portrait." Sam said.
"The resemblance was uncanny. And it's not the first time we've seen a vampire walk in the sunlight." Dean pointed out before he looked into the journal. "There was this guy Dad had met. Where was it? Ah. Here's where we can find him."
Dean and Sam knocked on the door as bearded man opened to them.
"Alaric Saltzman?" Dean asked.
Alaric eyed the men warily, seeing there was something familiar about them.
"Dean Winchester. This is my brother. Sam." Dean said, introducing himself and Sam and Alaric's eyes lit up in recognition.
"Ah. Nice to meet you." Alaric said, shaking hands with them. "Bobby said you were coming. I knew your father. It's a shame what happened to him."
"We're here about the recent murders and heard you might be the one to tell us about the Salvatores." Sam said and Alaric sighed.
"Damn it, Damon." Alaric muttered. "Look, I appreciate your help but… you've got no clue what are you getting yourselves into."
"Heard your wife was killed by a monster. Do you know what did it?" Sam asked.
"Yeah. And I did find it but… he got away." Alaric said, not exactly lying.
"Do you know anything about the Salvatore brothers?" Dean asked.
Alaric looked taken aback but quickly calmed himself. "If that's who you're after, all I can tell you it's not gonna be easy. I tried it before, didn't work so well for me."
"What do you mean?" Sam asked and Alaric sighed. He obviously couldn't tell them what had happened to him.
"If you're going after them, be careful." Alaric said, leaving them confused.
Later, Dean and Sam entered the police station, where they sat at the desk, while Sheriff Liz Forbes left them a pile of files.
"Here it is, agents. Hope you'll find what you need here. Though, I have to say, I didn't think feds would look into this or cold cases." Liz said.
"We just go where the office tells us. Thanks." Sam said.
Dean then handed Liz a card. "Sheriff Forbes, if you see or if someone tells you they'd seen something… they can't explain, here's our number. We're experts on this kind of things."
After few hours of examining the reports, both brothers frowned.
"If it was just ghosts, they wouldn't leave this kind of mess. This sounds more like a vampire." Sam said.
"Yeah, Dad definitely wouldn't let this one go." Dean said before he was lost in thoughts. "Unless…"
"What?" Sam asked, perking his head up.
"You know about the kind of vampires who can mind control you like Jedis do, right? I mean, we've never faced it but there were rumors that…"
"Compelling, yeah." Sam nodded before realizing what was he getting at. "You think a vampire compelled Dad to leave Mystic Falls before he could finish the case?"
"But what vampire would do it?" Dean wondered.
"You're John Winchester's sons, right?"
They turned to see a young man standing there as their eyes narrowed before realizing who it was as they pulled out their guns.
"I'm not here to fight you." The man said, raising his hands.
"You're Stefan, right?" Sam realized.
"You look peachy for a dead man walking." Dean said. "Either you're a zombie or…"
"…a vampire." Stefan confirmed. "And I know why you're here and I want to help. I want to stop my brother."
"Why would you do it?" Sam asked, skeptical.
"Because I saved your father's life years ago." Stefan said. "You have no idea what is Damon capable of and neither did your father."
"So you brainwashed our Dad into letting Damon kill more innocents?" Dean snapped.
"I handled it. He left eventually. I didn't know Damon was going to come back and if John had stayed, he would've died too, I saved his life this way!" Stefan snapped back.
"And look how that turned out. How many innocent people have died recently?" Sam pointed out.
"Look, I want Damon to stop hurting innocent people as much as you do. Let me help." Stefan said as Dean and Sam looked at each other warily before turning to Stefan. While they had met some good vampires before, they were skeptical about Stefan's intentions.
"Why would we trust you?" Dean asked.
"If things had been reversed and you were in my shoes, what would you do to save your brother from himself?" Stefan pointed out and Dean and Sam looked at each other again. They had been down that road far too many times to count and they had gone to lengths no ordinary person would.
"You would really fight your own brother?" Sam asked.
"I've let him hurt enough people. This has to end." Stefan said, adamant.
"Why would you help us?" Dean inquired.
"Because I'm not that strong. It'd take human blood and…" Stefan sighed as they realized how he was struggling with his brother on the loose.
"Look. We get it. You don't wanna relapse like Damon did and you can't kill him because for all his flaws he's your brother and you care about him. But you can't leave him on the loose either. But are you sure? Killing someone who's your family, that will change you. Forever." Sam said.
"I don't want him dead but… I don't see what other choice do I have." Stefan said and Dean and Sam looked at him with sympathy. There were monsters they had met who were good and fought against who they were but some of them would eventually give into their baser instincts, forcing Dean and Sam to put them down but there were still good monsters who were able to resist their compulsions. And there were times when they had been possessed or cursed and such and it seemed that there was no other way but to kill them and but they always managed to save each other in the end but Damon seemed to be a monster because that's who he was, not because of a curse or a demon and he apparently had no intention of changing.
"But how are we even going to find him?" Dean asked before his phone rang. "Hello? Liz? Wait, slow down. What monster?"
Later that night, Damon was pouring himself a glass of bourbon, when he turned his head to see Stefan enter with two other people.
"Damon Salvatore." Dean said.
Damon narrowed his eyes at the two men he had seen earlier before chuckling. "The mythbusters. Didn't think my brother would invite curious men like you here."
"We know what you are and we know what you did." Sam said.
"It's over, Damon." Stefan said.
"It hasn't even begun." Damon smiled.
Next thing he knew, Stefan blurred to him and threw him down on the floor as Damon crashed against a drawer before he got up.
"So now you turn people into vampires and put them down to play hero? You're even more disgusting than I'd thought." Dean sneered.
"So now you bring in hunters to help you?" Damon asked smugly.
"No. To stop you." Stefan said. "Here's your only chance, Damon. Leave Mystic Falls and don't come back."
Next thing they knew, Damon blurred towards Dean but anticipating it already, Dean grabbed a nearby chair and slammed it against Damon as he fell down as the chair shattered. It wasn't the first time that Dean had fought a foe faster and stronger than him.
"That's all you got?" Dean said smugly.
Next thing Dean knew, Damon grabbed him by his throat. "You know, your Dad was just a minor nuisance but you… I think I should've killed him and you two when I had the chance."
Dean shook Damon off as they began exchanging blows before Dean pulled out a knife and Damon hissed as he felt a cut across his arm and started to feel dizzy and weaker.
"It's laced with poison for vampires. Figured I could use some edge against you." Dean smirked.
Snarling in rage, Damon threw a punch but Dean blocked before trying to stab Damon but Damon knocked the knife away as they began trading blows but Damon landed few hits at Dean as he fell against the table. Damon tried to blur to Dean but he was slower due to the poison as Dean caught him and threw him down before slamming him to the floor and pummeling him and Dean was about to end it as he picked a wooden stake but Damon punched Dean as he fell over before both men got up. Damon was about to approach Dean but Dean recovered his knife and cut Damon's hand off as Damon screamed in pain and fell on his knees. Dean was about to finish him off before he saw the conflicted look in Stefan's eyes.
"Tell me you can stop." Dean said as he looked down at Damon. Sure, Damon was a vampire but killing a brother… "Don't make me do this. Tell me that you'll stop."
Damon looked up with a fierce hateful unrepenting glare. "I will never stop."
And in that moment, he had signed his death warrant. The last thing Damon Salvatore ever saw was flashing steel before his head fell off and rolled down the ground and body toppled.
Sterfan, Dean and Sam looked down at Damon's corpse sadly, while Dean and Sam looked at each other. Sure, each of them had gone off the deep end before, like when Sam was addicted to demon blood because of his toxic relationship with the demonness Ruby or Dean constantly going behind Sam's back and going a bit too far with them stopping certain monsters like Amy behind Sam's back and there were good demons and monsters like vampire Lenore who they ultimately were forced to kill later out of mercy because she had relapsed and fed on humans and begged them to kill her. They had always found a way to save the other, because they knew there was good in the other, even if saving them always came at a terrible price like when they had lost their father John due to John making a deal with a demon in exchange for his soul to save Dean and later Dean making another deal to save Sam, among other occassions.
"It was always going to end this way." Dean said as he saw how conflicted Stefan was. "You heard what he said yourself. Did you even try to stop him before? How many innocent did you let him kill?"
"Look, we're sorry about your brother but if half the things we've heard about him are true, this was long time coming." Sam said.
Stefan couldn't deny that Dean and Sam were right. After Vicki and Caroline, enough was enough. He had convinced himself that Damon needed to pay but ultimately, Stefan couldn't bring himself to kill his brother. Wanting him dead and seeing him dead were different matters altogether. He had expected that the brothers would at least chase Damon off but he couldn't deny the fact that Damon had this coming to him.
"A wise man once told me, 'Family don't end in blood but it doesn't start there either. Family cares about you. Not what you can do for them. Family's there, through good, the bad, all of it. They got your back. Even when it hurts. That's family.'" Dean said and Stefan considered. They had cared about each other when they were mortals almost two centuries ago but after Katherine Pierce, their relationship quickly took a steep turn and nothing that had happened after that even remotely fixed the bond they used to have but still, Stefan looked at Damon sadly, mourning for the people they used to be as Dean and Sam looked at him in sympathy.
"You better keep your nose clean, Stefan. Don't make us come back here for you too." Sam said before he and Dean walked away.
"I won't." Stefan promised as he knelt down towards Damon's corpse, staring at him sadly, mourning for who they used to be and knowing that Stefan had created this monster himself by him and Katherine turning Damon, who in return vowed to torment Stefan forever as tears filled his eyes. For all that had happened between them, deep down, he still cared about his brother and wished it hadn't come down to this.
Yeah, I know vampires are stronger and faster than ordinary humans but even a rookie hunter from Supernatural than just Dean and Sam is enough of a skilled fighter to take on creatures with superhuman strength or speed by adapting or improvising or just having enough experience already. Plus, while Dean and Sam also did to each other some nasty crap, either on purpose or out of a misguided attempt to protect them, ultimately they still care about each other as brothers, Damon is just a lowlife scum that can try to be better all he wants but at the end of the day Damon is Damon who just wants to make Stefan and others miserable and Stefan gives him free pass far too often to actually do anything about Damon's constant regressions and his terrible bullshit for all of Stefan's talk about taking care of Damon. Even when Damon is trying to be a good guy, the way he goes about it is just horrible, from what I hear, Damon comes off as a poor man's soulless Spike from BTVS and Stefan and others are far too lenient with Damon's crap and let him get away with it, even when they write him off at first, at the end they let bygones be bygones and what's astonishing is how Stefan, for all his talk about stopping Damon for good, eventually spares his life, so this felt much better.
