Jimmy, Naomi, Jey and Audrina all stopped and stared at the cabin. They had finally arrived. They had never been there before but they had seen pictures taken from other people over the years. The myth was not a secret at all, and the cabin was very much real.
"For some reason I expected it to be bigger," Jimmy said.
"Yeah, it looked bigger in the pictures," Jey said.
"Does it matter?" Audrina asked.
"Not really," Jey kissed Audrina's cheek. "Come on. Let's explore."
They walked over to the cabin and looked in through the hole in the wall that used to be a window. There was no longer any glass there. The cabin was full of dust and dirt. There were furniture and items there. Most things properly left behind by others people before them.
"This is so exciting," Jey said.
Jey opened the wooden door that made a loud noise. They all gritted their teeth at the noise.
"That hurt my ears," Audrina said.
"Let's just leave it open," Jey said.
They walked inside and placed all their belongings down on the floor.
"What's with the butterflies?" Naomi asked.
Naomi pointed at one of the walls where butterflies had been drawn. All of the walls had butterflies drawn on them. Some of them were beautiful and in colors while others were just silhouettes.
"They say she used to keep butterflies," Audrina said.
"Like pets?" Naomi asked.
"Companions properly," Audrina said. "She was said to be a good witch in touch with nature but the town feared her."
"One night they came to drive her out but she wasn't here. Instead they killed all her butterflies as some sort of warning for her to leave," Jey said.
"That's so sad," Naomi said.
"She swore revenge for each butterfly," Audrina said. "She put them on the wall and for each person she killed from town, a butterfly was set free."
"So the silhouettes are dead people? Cool, got it. I really don't wanna spend the night here anymore," Naomi said.
Jimmy chuckled, took her hand, and gave it a squeeze.
"It's just a story," Jimmy said.
"Stories always start with some truth," Naomi said.
"I'm sure it got twisted over the years," Jimmy said.
"Besides, it might as well just have been someone 20 years ago having fun drawing on the walls and making up the butterfly story," Jey said.
"Come on, you've done your research. You've seen pictures older than that with the butterflies on the wall," Audrina said.
"I'm trying not to scare her further," Jey said.
"Too late," Naomi said.
Naomi walked over to the wall and let her fingers run over some of the butterflies.
"So she was a good witch that turned bad because of what was done to her. I can't say I blame her," Naomi said.
"I think it's a bit overkill to value human life as the same as butterflies," Jey said.
"The butterflies were all she had. They were her whole life out here," Audrina said.
"So she went insane," Jimmy said.
"How did she die?" Naomi asked.
"No one knows. There's no myths written down about her actually dying. Some myths claim she's still around taking lives until all the butterflies have been avenged," Jey said.
"What happened to not scaring me further?" Naomi asked.
"Sorry," Jey chuckled.
Jimmy walked over to the couch and tried pushing it. It didn't move so he looked over at Jey.
"Help me move this," Jimmy said. "If we push it over to the wall, we should all be able to sleep here side by side."
Jey walked over to the other end of the couch and the two men started pushing it together.
"Holy shit, it's heavy," Jey said.
"No fucking couch is supposed to be that heavy," Jimmy said. "Give us a hand, girls."
Naomi and Audrina joined in. Together they managed to push the couch to the wall. Jey turned around first and noticed the trap door in the floor.
"What the hell?" Jey mumbled.
Jimmy, Naomi and Audrina turned around too to see what he was talking about. Jey walked over, grabbed the handle of the door, and pulled it open. A staircase led down into a basement. Jimmy, Naomi and Audrina walked over to look down as well.
"What does the myth say about this?" Naomi asked.
"There's no mention of a basement anywhere," Jey said.
"Shit just became real," Audrina said.
