Guilt and Forgiveness
That cannot be true! Yet why would you lie?
As if in a dream, I can see in my mind
My hands round your neck and squeezing so tight.
It makes me feel sick, fills me with fright.
What kind of magic could take hold like that?
Could make me hurt you? Could make me attack?
I don't understand but this guilt I know
Will follow me round wherever I go.

I stick by your side though fearing you'll say
I've broken our trust and you'd wish me away.
Without conscious thought, my hand reaches for you.
I feel your forgiveness – though how I've no clue.
Though I blame my weakness, you don't blame me at all.
Without words, we converse about this close call.
"I'm sorry I hurt you, brother and friend."
You say, "Don't worry. Me and Thee till the end."

A/N It always struck me how underplayed that moment was when Starsky hits the water and then realises he's attacked Hutch. Another lost opportunity! Hutch is given a small throw away line - "It's okay. You didn't hurt me" - but what struck me watching again recently is how Paul and David manage to make something out of nothing (in their usual wonderful way) and Starsky has his hand on Hutch's back the whole way as they scramble across the rocks for the second time. I love seeing that and so this poem tries to capture that moment.
