Beep... Beep... Beep...
Beep... Beep... Beep...
Beep... Beep... Beep...
That's all she could hear. Unconscious...
Beep...
The girl was a young average teenager of American descent mixed with Spanish heritage. She had slightly tanned peach-orange skin, long wavy blonde hair and bright scarlet eyes. Her height was approximately two inches shorter than Rex Salazar. She was laying on a desk, fully dressed in white. Her eyes slowly opened.
"Finally waking up. I see?" A doctor noticed.
"Where am I?" The girl asked.
"Providence Headquarters." The doctor answered. "You took quite the tumble after the accident."
"What accident?" The girl asked.
"You turned into an exponentially variegated organism, or more commonly known as an EVO." The doctor explained. "We thought that there were none left, but turns out Rex Salazar wasn't able to cure everyone."
"Who's Rex Salazar?"
"The guy who cured all of the EVOs." The doctor answered. "Any more questions before I continue?"
"Yeah... Where's my family?" The girl asked.
"Your sister is waiting outside, but your parents went missing while you were unconscious." The doctor answered. "Anyways, you have teeny tiny little machines in your body called Nanites. So basically, you have machine powers."
"So how much longer am I staying in here?" The girl asked.
"Probably a couple more hours, depending on how stable you are before then." The doctor answered. "But I think you're stable enough for your sister to come in."
Two Providence Agents walked a 7 year old girl who had brown hair in a ponytail with fair skin, a purple shirt and black pants.
"Saffron!" The 7 year old girl cried out, rushing to give her sister a great big hug.
"Jennifer!" Saffron cried out.
"You were a huge metal monster!" Jen exclaimed.
"I'm fine now, Jen." Saffron reassured Jen.
Jen kept hugging onto Saffron.
"Now Jennifer, I'll need you to release Saffron's arms." The doctor told Jen.
"Okay, doc." Jen released her sister from the hug.
The doctor proceeded to take some X Rays and do other tests. Saffron couldn't really understand anything he said about his science stuff, so she just stood around and watched him work like every day. When the doctor finished, Jen ran over to Saffron again and hugged her tight, then ran off.
"She seems to be okay." The doctor stated, checking Saffron's vitals. "I think we can release you tonight."
"Really?!" Saffron said excitedly.
"Yep! We've got it all covered." The doctor replied. "See you at home, kid."
When Saffron was back at her house, she ran up the stairs to get ready.
Timeskip: Two Years Later...
Saffron was at home, 16 years old now, waking up.
"Good morning, world!" Saffron yawned, walking downstairs.
Her sister, Jen, now 9 , came down the stairs wearing only shorts and a tank top.
"Hi sis." She yawned as well.
"Morning sis." Saffron smiled. "So, what shall we do today? Because, after our parents went missing..."
"Things haven't been the same..." Jen sighed.
"Right?" Saffron agreed.
"But maybe, there might be something we can try, that'll make it better." Jen suggested.
Saffron looked confused. "Like what?"
"Let's just try to relax for the day." Jen replied.
Saffron nodded in response and headed to her room. Jen went to her room. As Jen lay in bed, she began to think hard. Maybe Saffron would find some fun ways to let loose a bit? After all, her best friend and sister always tried hard to keep things light for the sisters. Maybe something could help them forget about all their problems? Or maybe they could try going to a beach somewhere? They didn't live too far away, right? But where? That's when Jen remembered the local aquarium, where all sorts of animals lived in tanks. And if there were any sharks around, maybe she could go to see them sometime. Jen loved watching sharks swim.
Later that day, Jen and Saffron made their way to the aquarium. While looking for shark tanks, a woman approached the two.
"Ew, you're that EVO girl from two years ago!" The lady exclaimed, clear disgust in her voice.
"Oh yeah, Saffron Isafroni, at your service, ma'am." Saffron greeted, misinterpreting what the lady's intentions were.
"I thought Rex Salazar cured every filthy EVO." The lady thought out loud.
"Excuse me, Miss." Jen chimed in. "My sister is a nice person! Even when things get tough, she always remains kind to everyone!"
"Honestly, I feel bad for your family, having to deal with such a moron." The lady uttered, walking off.
Jen looked up at Saffron.
"You ok, sis?" Jen asked Saffron.
"Do you really think what that lady said was true?" Saffron asked, tearing up a little.
"Of course not, plus, I think EVOs were pretty cool, even if most of them looked like monsters." Jen replied.
Saffron sat down next to Jen, crying.
"Why does it have to be us? Why not someone else? Someone normal, without a freakin' machine for their brain? Why did it have to be us?" Saffron asked.
"I know, sis." Jen replied. "But hey, don't worry. We'll figure this out together."
A few minutes later, Saffron calmed down.
"Yeah. Why don't we go find those sharks now?" Saffron rhetorically asked.
Saffron and Jen continued their search.
Meanwhile, a shadowy figure was in the shark tank, not letting anyone notice him or what he was trying to do.
"Come here, fellow predator..." He whispered.
The shark swam over to the mysterious man. The man smirked an evil smirk, touching the shark on the head.
"Shark here..." The man said to the shark. "I am Van Kliese. Rex Salazar thought he could get rid of me, well he should have thought differently. Shark, I have given you temporary access to some of my nanites. On my command, you will mutate yourself into an EVO and smash up the aquarium, until someone who can manipulate machinery comes and fights you, then I'll come in... Follow my commands, and I'll set you free into the ocean. Disobey them... It leads to your demise."
The shark got the gist and swam off, ready for Van Kliese's signal.
Back with Saffron and Jen, who were still in the aquarium, they decided to look at a map.
"Do you think the Sharks are near?" Jen asked Saffron.
"I hope so, I really want to see them." Saffron replied.
Jen nodded and the two made their way to another place of the aquarium, a large tank. There they saw a bunch of sharks swimming in circles, as if waiting for something to attack or eat them.
"Hey, sis! Look!" Jen shouted.
"I know. Isn't it amazing?" Saffron replied.
But soon, the lady from before approached Saffron again.
"If it isn't that filthy EVO girl?" The lady moaned. "Come to destroy the place?"
"No, ma'am. I just want to see the sharks, if that's ok." Saffron explained.
The lady gave the girl weird looks, but then nodded.
"I don't see why nobody has fed you to them, yet." The lady uttered.
"If you're trying to hurt my sister, I won't allow it!" Jen yelled at the lady.
"Fine, but if you aren't happy with how your family stuff is going, there are plenty of places where there are normal families." The lady shrugged, walking off.
Saffron walked over to the shark tank, staring at the group of sharks. One particular shark seemed familiar to her.
"...Hey... Have you ever seen this shark before?"
"No, why?" Jen replied.
"There's something... Off... About it... Like I can sense some sort of machinery of some sorts." Saffron explained.
Van Kliese looked over, not wanting anyone to ruin his plan to destroy Rex Salazar, he made the signal.
Soon, the shark had become bigger and grown bulky arms and legs, breaking out of the tank.
This caught Saffron off guard as she jumped back. She then turned towards Jen and ran to hide behind the wall. Jen also hid behind the wall.
A second later, Saffron saw the shark start attacking something.
It quickly found whatever it was, and tore it apart. The shark then grabbed the body and started swallowing it up, leaving no trace of its existence.
Saffron started heavily breathing, clearly scared by the situation. The shark turned and moved in the direction of Saffron's hiding spot. The shark stopped just inches in front of Saffron.
It's mouth opened wide as if it was waiting for something. Saffron began to cry. Her heart pounded rapidly within her chest.
Then, out of nowhere, two giant metal fists appeared on Saffron's hands.
Before long, Saffron realised she had the hands and knew she could fight back.
As Saffron was about to move forward, the shark opened its huge mouth, aiming right at Saffron.
In the blink of an eye, Jen rushed out and stood between the shark and Saffron, causing it to stop moving forward.
The shark growled loudly.
Saffron threw a punch at the Shark, Van Kliese watched from afar.
"This isn't what I had in mind, but it'll do." Van Kliese uttered to himself.
Saffron kept attacking the Shark, the Shark fighting back. Saffron knew that just punches wouldn't work, so she needed to come up with a plan. Suddenly, she spotted a big, wooden stick, lying on the ground.
She took off running toward the stick and used it as a weapon, knocking the Shark backwards. The Shark growled angrily and started attacking Saffron with more ferocity than before.
Jen then noticed Saffron, trying to take on a huge Shark. Jen rushed to Saffron's aid.
"I'm going to grab onto that stick!" Jen shouted.
"I'll hold him off! Go get the stick!" Saffron told Jen, knowing that Jen could handle the situation.
Jen nodded and rushed to the stick, jumping on it and holding onto it tightly. The Shark kept throwing itself at the stick, trying to reach Jen. Once Saffron noticed that Jen held onto the stick securely, she quickly joined Jen on the stick. Together with Jen, they swung the stick towards the shark, striking him square in the jaw. The shark fell to one knee and dropped the stick, falling to the floor.
Soon, Providence agents had came in, Van Kliese running off with nobody noticing him.
Saffron looked at the knocked out shark as she deformed the fists.
"Thank you for your service ma'am." A Providence Agent thanked Saffron.
"No problem." Saffron replied.
"We'll let Rex Salazar do the rest." The Providence Agent instructed.
Saffron and Jen nodded walking out of the aquarium, happy that they did what they could.
As they walked home, Jen asked Saffron, "What were those metal fists?"
"I don't know, when I felt like I was in genuine danger, I imagined myself fighting off the shark." Saffron replied. "I guess it could be part of my machine powers."
"Yeah, I wonder how much the government has been working with it?" Jen wondered.
"Let's just hope that whoever created it hasn't been hurting innocent people in any way." Saffron remarked. "Maybe they were doing good, helping people."
Jen didn't reply, not sure how to respond.
"Well, as long as the civilians are safe, that's all that matters." Jen responded.
"I agree." Saffron agreed. "Besides, we'll always protect each other. No matter what happens to the world around us."
Jen smiled.
"Yes, no matter what happens. We've been through so much... And we'll survive everything too."
That night, Saffron thought about everything that happened that day, and how she was a hero.
