Mirabel stood on the balcony. She was staring at the mountains. "Mira, there you are," Luisa said. "Elena was asking for you. She's here for the fitting of her quinceañera dress."
"Oh," Mirabel said. "I forgot that was today. Tell her I'll be down in a moment."
"What's wrong, niñera?" Luisa asked.
"I've just been thinking," Mirabel said. "Why are we still in here? If Isabela, Camilo, and Dolores are still somewhere in the Encanto, we would have found a sign. We've been walking in circles for the last week. We need to take the search out of the Encanto."
"Leave the Encanto?" Luisa asked. "Mirabel, te has vuelto loca? Abuela has forbidden us from leaving for a reason. There are people like the ones who killed Abuelo out there. We don't even know if our gifts will work out there."
"Camilo, Dolores, and Isabela could be dead," Mirabel shouted. "And we're here, sitting on our culos."
"Abuela knows what she's doing," Luisa said. "She's protected our community for the last fifty years. She's not perfect, but she's a good leader. If she thinks we need to search out of the Encanto, then we'll search outside of the Encanto."
Mirabel let out a sigh. "Answer me this," Luisa said. "If you were missing, would you want them on a suicide mission?"
"We make our run today," Isabela declared. "We've waited too long."
"We can't," Dolores said. "Estaríamos marchando hacia nuestra muerte. We don't have a plan. We don't know how well our gifts work out here. We may have been away from home too long, and they don't work. We don't know where Camilo is. We need more time."
"We need to act quickly before he separates us," Isabela said. The man entered the room. Isabela started to remove something from under the cot."
"I need perra flor," he said. "I have some friends coming over. I want them to take a long at her."
Isabela walked over to him. She hit him over the head with a plate. Once he was on the ground, Isabela stomped on his groin. "Vete a la mierda, verdadero pedazo de heces," Isabela growled. "Let's go, Doli."
The two girls ran out of the building. "Keep running," Dolores said. "He has guards around here."
Sure enough, there were many armed men with guns at them. "If you shot one, we can easily capture the other," one of the men said. Isabela raised her middle finger at them.
"Chúpalo," Isabela yelled. Every man opened fire. Dolores kept on running.
"Isa comes on," Dolores yelled. She noticed Isabela wasn't close. "Isa?"
She turned around. Isabela was laying on the forest floor. Dolores ran to her. She draped Isabela's arm over her shoulder. Isabela had multiple bullet wounds. "Mierda," Dolores murmured. She couldn't hear Isabela's heartbeat. "No, don't you dare. You can't die on me."
A bullet ripped through the back of Dolores's leg. She fell to the ground. And then there were two.
